High stable modulators for klystron supplying

Abstract

Series of modern type compact HV power modulator for klystron energization with maximum output voltage of 80 kV and current up to 500 A are presented. Mean power is 80 kW, output voltage instability-less than 1%. Pulse length and load current can be varied in a wide range without any essential modification of the modulator structure. CW mode of operation can be realized too. The modulator consists of primary solid states regulator and output pulse former based on a new power vacuum triode. Two-loops stabilization and feed-forward control are used. Charging voltage is fixed with primary regulator assistance and flattop of the pulse-with the tube. It provides high efficiency of the modulator and gradually decreases the energy stored at the high voltage stage. Auxiliary systems for the klystron's filament and other consumers can be installed if necessary. Combination of new schematic decisions and use of modern switches satisfies the high requirements of the microwave generator supply.
