Presented rules were excerpted from the review of word ethics literature. These are: the principle of equality, the principle of inclusion, the principle of honesty and truthfulness, the principle of non-coercion, the principle of non-dehumanization, the principle of taking into account human complexity and multidimensionality, and the principle of preserving and respecting autonomy. The article presents types of linguistic behaviour, which proves that the indicated rules are respected and disregarded in the communication process. In order to systematize the analysis of both types of behaviour, in the article a code key was used. The aim of the presented analyses was to examine the basic category of truth for the information (press) releas and to indicate its linguistic exponents. The analyses adopted a mediolinguistic perspective, referred to the semantics and pragmatics of truth combined with the field of press texts and to the concept of the „factual pact”. The research is based on text corpora in these three languages. Its objective is to analyse the linguistic images of the word holiday and its Lithuanian and Polish equivalents and to examine their collocational (non)coincidence in order to systematize the teaching/learning of collocations to French learners. {"title":"Mitologizmy grecko-rzymskie w retrokryminałach Marka Krajewskiego – konwencja i inwencja w aspekcie funkcjonalnym","authors":"Magdalena Puda-Blokesz","doi":"10.24917/20831765.17.14","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.24917/20831765.17.14","url":null,"abstract":"The subject to be presented and described in the present paper are word combinations with mythological (Graeco-Roman) origins occurring in eight crime novels penned by Marek Krajewski, taking the shape of: (i) better or less known phrasemes, or conventional petrified multiword units reproduced in a communicative act to express particular intentions and intensions; (ii) phrasematic innovations, or phrasemes modified formally and/or semantically and used against the grain of the phraseological norm; or (iii) literary nonce phrasemes, that is multiword units created ad hoc for the purposes of style and world depiction, containing eponyms and eponymisms of mythological origin which exist in Polish. The proposed examination of conventional (the titular convention), innovative, and nonce (the titular invention) units used in the excerpted crime novels is of a qualitative and functional nature, since its focus is on an attempt to point out and discuss the functions which the selected examples serve in the literary messaging. Polyword mythology-based expressions fulfil numerous and various (often at the same time) functions in M. The analysis showed that the teachers studied position themselves and their students in relation to the newcomers differently depending on the language(s) they speak. The Us and Others distinction was more prominent in relation to English-speaking return migrant children, whom they positioned higher than their monolingual Polish students, and with whom they often struggled to maintain equal, if not superior position. Conversely, other multilinguals were positioned on the same level as Polish learners, yet subordinate to the teacher’s dominant role. {"title":"Książka obrazkowa jako przekład intersemiotyczny – \"Król Maciuś Pierwszy\" w obrazach Iwony Chmielewskiej","authors":"J. Dybiec-Gajer","doi":"10.24917/20831765.17.3","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.24917/20831765.17.3","url":null,"abstract":"A picturebook as an intersemiotic translation of a source text involves a complex process of negotiating and generating meaning by interpretation, selection and mediation. When there is a considerable time gap between the first publication of the source text and its translation into a new visual modality, additional concerns appear that further complicate the process. To what extent is modernization recommended or needed? How does the unfolding of social practices and historical change affect the generation of meanings? What are the illustrator’s loyalties? The dynamic development of multimodal (polysemiotic) texts leads to the reinterpretation and expansion of Jakobson’s classic category of intersemiotic translation. It is used in the study of visual literature, which raises methodological questions as to whether book illustrating is a translational activity. Today intersemiotic translation seems much closer to adaptation or “resemiotization” (O’Halloran et al. 2016) than to interlingual translation proper. Thus the study of discrepancies, shifts and changes, rather than the pursuit of equivalence, may offer new insights. A case in point is the artistic picturebook Jak ciężko być królem [How Hard It Is to Be a King] (2018) by Iwona Chmielewska, who provides a contemporary visual interpretation of the almost century-old King Matt the First (Król Maciuś Pierwszy) (1923). Written by a Polish-Jewish pedagogue, educator and writer, Janusz Korczak’s poignant and multilayered novel about a child king is a recognizable children’s classic with four English translations available. Drawing on desrciptive translation studies, the aim of the article is to analyze the picturebook at hand as an intersemiotic translation, mapped against the existing translation series. What are its translational and pictorial dominant features? What characterizes the artist’s multimodal strategies in representing the source text? How is the unsettling or ambiguous content mediated? The aim of the work is to present the resource of anthroponyms (names, surnames or pseudonyms), which are the basis of language games, as well as to discuss the methods of modification and the relationship between the anthrop­onym and the entire advertising message. The research material comes from the Lidl Polska fanpage on Facebook. It has been shown that associations related to authentic characters and heroes of artistic works play an important role. The positive features of the designate are tried to be transferred to the advertised product, often indicating tangential elements in the promotional post. The first part is the description of a trachea (its functions and structure) as an anatomical organ, which is followed by the analysis of its etymology. The main focus of investigation is the description of tchawica in the history of the Polish language and dialects. For this purpose, synonyms, derivatives, variant forms (in terms of phonetics and morphology), names based on foreign words (derived from Latin and Greek), as well as hybrid names, have been pointed out.
