The article highlighted the positive aspects and the critical issues inherent in this situation. On a landscape scale, abandonment is seen as a positive factor that can determine the improvement of biodiversity over time but, since it mainly affects the forests of mountain areas, there is a real risk of compromising important protective functions that contribute to guaranteeing the quality of life of local communities, especially in the face of climate change. Logging operations always have a significant impact on stands but only through silviculture, if implemented with a systemic approach, it is possible to give the forest structure and composition that make it adequate to carry out protective functions. Cork forests, more or less degraded whose quality status is lacking because of the frequent fires, excessive grazing and lack of adequate cultural care, are present in all the provinces, certainly among all the causes the main one is the absence of planning. From this premise surfaces the need to know and govern in a congruous way this study case of a Sicilian wooded area through the drafting of Forest Management Plans, aiming at the restoration of efficiency, functionality and, in particular, of the sustainable production of cork from oak woods. In this note, the peer-reviewed forestry journals in Italy - Annals of Silvicultural Research, Dendronatura, Forest@, iForest, L’Italia Forestale e Montana, Sherwood - are evaluated and compared using a bibliometric analysis based on quantitative indicators. Annals of Silvicultural Research, edited online by CREA Research Centre for Forestry and Wood, publishes in English original scientific articles, reviews, international project reports and notes on all aspects of silviculture. iForest and Forest@ are two peer-reviewed online journals published by the Italian Society of Silviculture and Forest Ecology, the first one in English, while the second one in Italian;  iForest and Forest@ encompass a broad range of research aspects concerning forest science; of special interest are studies addressing the biological and ecological bases for the sustainable management of forest ecosystems. L’Italia Forestale e Montana/Italian Journal of Forest and Mountain Environments is a scientific online journal published by the Italian Academy of Forest Sciences that contains scientific articles and reviews, technical notes, letters, opinions, news and book reviews in all the fields of forest sciences and forest policies and economics. Sherwood and Dendronatura, edited respectively by a private publishing company and the Association of Foresters of the Trentino province, are two technical journals mostly devoted to the decision makers, forest owners, professional foresters and forest officials and technicians of public administrations. In recent years, due to the lack of funding in the RDPs of the regions, surfaces destined to this type of crop were drastically reduced, causing a crisis in the wood chip market. It is therefore necessary to think of new forms of use, which in the case of eucalyptus could be represented by firewood. On this subject, within the AGROENER project, a research action is carried out with the aim on recovery and valorisation of residual biomasses of forest utilization and verification of the economic sustainability of firewood production from eucalyptus coppices managed as short rotation. During the utilization of a 4-year-old coppice, two firewood production systems have been compared: the traditional one, the Short Wood System (SWS) and the Whole Tree System (WTS). The growing stock per hectare was 73.56 t, with 68% (49.91 t) of firewood. The gross productivity of the work site, adopting the SWS, was 0,77 t h -1 per operator, respect to 0,86 t h -1 obtained with WTS. Wood production costs were € 30.78 t -1 for the SWS, and € 28.59 t -1 for the WTS, with values per hectare of € 2,264 and € 2,103, respectively. Considering equal to € 60 t -1 the current sale value of firewood and € 10 t -1 that of residuals (only for the WTS), the gain for both work systems are 9.93 € t -1 for the SWS and € 15.33 t -1 for the WTS. These are periodic operations, are essential to keep the outflow lines efficient, counteracting natural dynamics that can cause the loss of hydraulic functionality of the waterways. The restoration of the hydraulic functionality is a topic that has long been addressed in the context of land management actions. Here we describe the origins, development and decline of a traditional livestock system, based on buffalo breeding, used for the maintenance of the hydraulic network in the plains of the Campania region: the “mena delle bufale”, which has been practiced at least from the XVII to the XIX century.
