The purpose of this case is to complement existing theories and demonstrate how entrepreneurs' internal and external motivators have an impact on diagnosis and assessment of informational cues present in the external environment. This case describes how an entrepreneur assesses opportunity-related information in order to arrive at a decision while connecting them via innovative practices. It also demonstrates how strategic business alliances help new ventures to constantly meet continuous innovation pressure and how dynamic customisation and social network acts as a key driving force behind venture creation. RTAP is a small time engineering service provider, seeded by its founder when Indian economy moved towards liberalisation. The founding members were first generation entrepreneurs without any prior start-up experience. The case attempts to examine the antecedents of, and the relationships between, entrepreneurial opportunity recognition, individual-level motivation and innovation performance, strategic alliances and social networking.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123045884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to explore and measure the possible SEF of mergers using the 5Qs approach. Data for this study was collected from questionnaires. The data was analysed using a multiple regression model in order to test the effect of the independent variables related to mergers and the dependent variable of SEF. The results indicate that not all qualities were significant but the infrastructure-oriented construct (INFRA) and the process-oriented construct (PROC) are the most significant in the regression models for obtaining better SEF of the merger relationship. The study extracts the valuable lessons that might help others to effectively utilise mergers and strategic alliances between corporations and higher education institutions.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121221344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper examines a family firm's organisational learning through exogenous inter-organisational relationships and discovers the facilitation of a pro-learning culture. We find that learning through international strategic alliances increases endogenous learning opportunities among individuals, groups and the organisation. We contribute to the literature on how learning management capabilities and tasks from international strategic alliance partners facilitate creating, retaining and transferring knowledge within the organisation to improve and build new sources of competitive advantage. The implications for family firms who recognise the importance of creating a pro-learning culture develop the foundations of institutionalised learning that facilitate sustainable distinctive competencies.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"68 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131569317","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper analyses a sample of 497 alliances, in ten countries, in the global pharmaceutical sector where alliances are prolific and central to corporate strategy. The results suggest that direct technological commonality (measured by cross patent citations between each pair), indirect commonality (measured by the degree to which they share common third-party technology sources), and prior alliance ties statistically explain the propensity that any two firms in a network will form an alliance. We also explore cross-border effects to see if companies originating in different nations are more likely, or less likely, to form alliances because of their national origins.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"57 9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124484174","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However with knowledge process outsourcing (KPO), organisations are also exploring outsourcing of closer-to-core knowledge- intensive processes. Additionally, they are increasingly unwilling to the draw the line of separation between business process and relevant technology outsourcing and are expecting an integrated as-a-service approach. Thus KPO service providers are confronted with the dual challenge of building knowledge-intensive capabilities as well as integrating the relevant technologies hitherto not under their purview. This is leading many KPO organisations to look at building strategic partnerships with technology organisations. However, the success of the endeavour potentially rests on the organisation's alliance management capability as well as its ability of acquire, internalise and implement knowledge from partners (absorptive capacity). This paper attempts to develop a framework of possible alliance governance structures specifically aimed at KPO in an as‐a‐service scenario.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"126 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128347140","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Results based on a sample of 159 manufactures indicate that there are statistical significances for the strategic motivations and management motivations and very acceptable statistical significance for the financial motivations. The regression model could not show any statistical relevance regarding the Technological motivations. This means that hypotheses H1, H2 and H3 are confirmed. The correlation between all variables was strong more than r = 0.3, p < 0.00. Support for predictions that the impact of resource-based approach on motivations and performance is in part contingent on their interrelationships and links with competitive strategy was limited.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131672516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Locations away from the office provide the proper circumstances for a close bond to be developed. This is particularly true for events (such as informal dinners and outdoor activities like golf). Such settings are regularly used to strengthen and consolidate long-term, trust-based relationships. In the long run, these might lead to business deals. Because these settings are so distinct from the usual professional settings, it is possible to raise personal matters and to have a conversation on far less rigid terms. This study, which focuses on the instrumentality of social relations, shows that informality in business relations is a way to create long-term, trust-based relationships between (potential) business partners at the golf course in the Netherlands.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125810032","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
