The research adopts a contextual-processual view to paint a broad picture of the issues involved in the different stages of offshore outsourcing. Using the case study method, the research draws on fieldwork from three different IT departments (cases) of the company, where offshore outsourcing programmes were implemented. The findings reveal that the adoption and use of offshore outsourcing was influenced by a combination of contextual factors and that a number of organisational factors involved in the diagnosis and planning as well as implementation phases contributed to or prevented the successful management of change. In light of the findings, a process model is presented, which provides a useful basis for understanding and explaining the change process with respect to offshore outsourcing in organisations.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"15 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129515530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purposes of this paper are: 1) to gain an understanding of how coopetition emerges within an industry using a case study of the screwcap initiative in the Australian, New Zealand and US wine industries; 2) to develop a conceptual model that describes the factors that lead to coopetition among horizontal competitors at the industry level. The following five factors are found to facilitate formation of this type of collective horizontal coopetition: strategic common goals, greater expected collective benefits, safeguards against knowledge transfer, intra-industry complementarities and strong ties in cooperative networks. These factors are presented as propositions. Then, theoretical contributions and managerial implications are discussed.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"95 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125505693","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There are, however, firm-specific differences in the tendency to form such relationships. In order to address the issue, this study explores why certain firms in the global ICT sector are better able and more likely to collaborate with their competitors than others. We approach the issue from the structural embeddedness perspective, examining firm centrality in its competitive and alliance networks. The findings indicate that firms with a central position in competitor networks are relatively more likely to engage in coopetition than those not so centrally placed. On the other hand, the findings show that firms holding a central position in their alliance networks collaborate relatively more with complementary partners than with their competitors.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128813439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper examines the modelling of the EPS in the least complex structural form. The paper adds to the existing body of knowledge in econometric modelling through application of the group method of data handling (GMDH) algorithms. The GMDH works on the principle of criteria of choice or selection of the model to be made from a small number of data points. GMDH then determines the model of optimum complexity by shifting through a large number of models. Consequently, the best model is obtained in this prediction process. The subjective error of the model is minimal. The analysis is supported by case study of an Indian auto major.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127908470","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Escalation in input costs and subsequent fall in profits led to a host of mergers and acquisitions in the publishing industry in the USA and Europe, mainly in the 1960s and in the 1980s. The consolidation is believed to have increased the industry concentration and the market share of the largest firms, leading to an oligopolistic structure, greater market power of firms and higher prices. However, despite the mergers, the US book industry remained monopolistically competitive in the latter half of the 20th century, except for a brief period in the late 1990s when it showed oligopolistic trends. Thus, contrary to the general belief, consolidation in the US book industry might not be a major cause for the rise in prices of books since 1960s.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"747 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116997243","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We describe the nature of collective strategy and strategic group activity to understand the behaviour of individuals' collaborations on service transactions. The interfirm and intrafirm collaborative behaviour of entrepreneurs are observed using a multi-level fixed effects linear regression model with 445 firms and over 30,000 transactions. We find internal collaborative activity will not necessarily increase performance but it may assist in higher quality deal flow. This study suggests the entrepreneurial behaviour of individuals operating in a fragmented industry will be to collaborate for more quality deals as opposed to more quantity deals. This behaviour is similarly to participation in strategic groups at the firm level of analysis.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126235239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The UAE is recently classified under emerging market with approximately 85% to 95% of the companies being SMEs. The banks have become very selective as lenders and investors in the UAE. Therefore, SMEs in the UAE should adopt international financial reporting standard (IFRS) for SMEs, which is a simplified version of IFRS prepared especially for SMEs. An empirical study is undertaken to explore the readiness of the SMEs in UAE to adopt IFRS for SMEs. The dependent variables in the questionnaire analyse the stage of readiness for the accounting standard transition. The sample size is 35 and the findings suggest that 60% of the SMEs in UAE are likely to follow IFRS for SMEs in the next three years.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133769591","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Strategic HR solutions are offered to begin to deal with the research findings and develop global talent management. Conclusions are that organisations are turning to markets abroad to further their growth ambitions and that the strategic management of global talent can lead to sustained competitive advantage. There is limited availability of global talent and this is exacerbated by the ethnocentric approach of many international organisations that seek and develop talent only in their own parochial image. Demand is in excess of supply and many roles are going unfilled with company growth ambitions at best faltering and at worse not meeting shareholder expectations. Organisations that have aligned their talent strategy to their business strategy are reaping the rewards of forward and strategic thinking.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123588059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
