This study investigates the effects of one type of shared mental model - team strategic knowledge mental model (shared understanding about the interactions between team) - team communication, and collective efficacy, on alliance team effectiveness. Team development stage and top management involvement were examined as moderators. Study participants included alliance team members, team leaders, and executives in twenty-two alliance teams involved in fifteen strategic alliances. Results showed a positive relationship between the strategic knowledge mental model and team performance. Also, the team communication-performance relationship was moderated by top management involvement. The implications of the results for research and practice are discussed.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133102720","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study, I base my theoretical framework on the resource-based view and the social capital theory. I examine the effect of diversity of resources, in other words the variety or mix of different kind of resources, which constitutes both physical and social dimensions, on the performance consequences of domestic and international joint ventures. Data were collected on 117 equity joint venture activities in the pharmaceutical, semiconductor, and computer industries over a span of 15 years (1996-2010). The results of this study show that joint venture performance is enhanced under conditions of ownership equity, non-cultural, structural and status diversity. The relationship between cultural diversity and alliance performance improves when joint venture partners share similar business domains and goal orientations. The findings of this study shed light on the important factors that may help or hinder joint venture performance. I conclude with implications for joint venture theory and practice.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115139444","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, these alliances are not common in some regions of the UK. The paper proposes a new multivariate model based on the theory of planned behaviour to test the hypothesis that the importance that farmers attribute to cooperative alliances is determined by economic and social-psychological variables. Evidence supporting this hypothesis was found from a sample of ex-sugar beet farmers of the West Midlands of the UK. This finding provides an additional explanation for the cooperation failure in this country.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117029408","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forming alliance is a reliable solution for companies based in developing countries to gain an advantage in international markets. Most of the previous studies present generic models or sets of characteristics for partner selection. In contrast, the current study suggests the partner characteristics which alliances' leaders should care about to be financially prosperous in international markets. Grounded in the resource-based view and review of recent studies, the theoretical framework of partner characteristics consisted of 13 variables. The data was gathered from Iranian alliances and analyses were done through the principal component and multiple regression analyses. The findings stress the importance of cognitive capability and knowledge stock as the most effective partner characteristics in export performance of alliances. Specifically, results introduce a framework that addresses why managers select partners with certain, specific characteristics to improve the export performance of alliances.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115765648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper used qualitative research conducted through a literature review, exploratory study consists of interview, observations and archival study. One finding of this research is that Pertamina, an Indonesian state-owned enterprise in energy in a developing country, which has rich of natural resources, is attempting to increase its benefit and competitive advantage by leveraging its unique resources through contractual alliances in research and development projects with energy companies from developed country. The company's activities are divided into three phases. First was the pre-project phase, in which partners were selected based on the following factors: complementary assets, resources alignment objectives, risk sharing and cost sharing. In the project-execution phase, the following innovation activities were performed based on the following factors: trust, commitment and integrity. Moderating by organisation structure based on the factors: team building process, partner roles, communication process and decision-making process the post-project phase commercialised innovation based on innovativeness, as a source for competitive advantage needs to be properly managed.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116211615","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given their high failure rate, this study aims to identify factors that contribute to an alliance failure to better understand the strategic alliance management process to help alliances survive. Purposefully, the Volvo-Renault alliance break-up is investigated. A Process Model for International Strategic Alliance Lifecycle is developed. The findings establish that post-formation, the strategic alliance process necessitates managing interactions among: partners' objectives; partners' resource contribution; access to partner's network; and alliance performance. However, for an alliance to sustain, learning and assessment must be an integral part. Learning and assessment are critical strategic inputs that serve as 'binding forces', and as an 'alert mechanism' whereby timely corrective managerial actions are triggered in favour of an alliance sustainability and vice versa.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125891981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Managed learning networks are an example of an intermediate form of network relationship with both formal and informal elements. The aim of the paper is to help understand the implications of the degree of formality/informality for group-based learning. This is based on a multi-dimensional conception of formalisation that focuses specifically on two dimensions: firstly, formality as a feature of rule-guided behaviour and secondly, as a characteristic of the social and emotional dynamics of groups. The interplay between these dimensions is examined and an initial framework suggesting the implications of alternative configurations for group learning is proposed.","PeriodicalId":334553,"journal":{"name":"International Journal of Strategic Business Alliances","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130035961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
