{"title":"Against Christianization: Socio-Religious Movements in Magelang after the Java War","authors":"Muhammad Fatkhan, Dudung Abdurrahman, N. Hak","doi":"10.14421/esensia.v23i2.3924","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14421/esensia.v23i2.3924","url":null,"abstract":"This paper explores the aftermath of the Java War on the socio-religious climate in Magelang. The rate of Christianization in that landscape accelerated following the war between the colonial regime and local residents. The discussion reconsiders the strategies of two leading figures of Nahdlatul Ulama (NU) and Muhammadiyah in stemming Christianization in the 19th-century Magelang. The Christian missionary agenda in Magelang was accomplished by eliciting the community’s sympathy. The missionaries built public hospitals and churches for local residents and hence held the congress of Catholic political associations and De Gereformeerde zending in Midden-Java in Magelang. The Dutch government also issued various policies to suppress Islamic movements. This paper finds that Dalhar Abdurrahman and Ahmad Dahlan responded to the missionary agenda in Magelang with non-confrontational strategies. Dalhar divided the socio-religious landscape of Magelang into two regions, the South and the North, based on the situation of Christian development. Dalhar also build a pesantren in Watucongkol and initiated the foundation of the Magelang Branch of NU to coordinate Muslim reformists. Dahlan halted Christianization by establishing a modern educational institution called Kweekschool Islam in an effort to compete with Dutch schools in Magelang. {"title":"Contestation of Contemporary Islam: Conservative Islam versus Progressive Islam","authors":"Zuly Qodir, Bilveer Sight","doi":"10.14421/esensia.v23i2.4316","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14421/esensia.v23i2.4316","url":null,"abstract":"This article analyzes the articulation of Islamic thought in the 2014 and 2019 General Elections in Indonesia, both of which were marked by efforts by progressive and conservative Muslims to dominate public spaces. Contestation was evident in these political discourses, with progressive Muslims advocating for moderatism, political ethics, and tolerance in narratives of inclusivism, pluralism, and tolerance while conservative Muslims disseminating extremism, the formalization of sharia law, and intolerance in narratives of exclusivism and homogenization. The analysis questions the continuity-discontinuity, motives, and actors of both progressive and conservative Muslim movements and investigates the challenges for progressive Muslims in disseminating their narratives in Indonesia. The result argues that massive religious organizations in Indonesia articulate, internalize, and institutionalize progressive thought within their organizations and educational institutions. The authors uses a descriptive-analytical method and a Sufi-philosophical approach in Ibn Miskawaih's work entitled Tahdzīb al-Akhlāq wa Tathhīr al-'Arāq. The results obtained by the author from this study are that justice, according to Ibnu Miskawaih, is the alignment of the architecture of the soul, behaviour, and human condition so that nothing exceeds or reduces one another. Ibn Miskawaih's justice lies in Islamic shari'ah as a measure of balance in a case and a way to achieve prosperity. Thus, the concept of justice has a significant role in environmental conservation and protection. As a result of these differences, Indonesian society is vulnerable to friction between religious groups. This study aims to describe the idea of the philosophy of religion as the basis for logical thinking and understanding religion universally and comprehensively. The method used in this research is library research, to explore and examine data or information regarding the research discussion. This study concludes that an understanding of religion needs to be based on moderate values as an effort to create harmony between religious communities. Philosophy of religion can be a means of constructive thinking in understanding religion rationally, logically, critically, and deeply so as to create a moderate perspective. The construction of religious moderation values aims to realize a way of thinking that chooses the middle way to realize social harmony and balance, not to behave and think in a radical way in understanding things.Abstrak: Indonesia dengan segala kekayaan yang dimilikinya, mulai dari beragam suku, budaya dan agama menjadikannya negara yang multikultural. Namun Sebagai negara yang memiliki masyarakat yang plural dengan berbagai pemahaman, akan selalu ada gesekan antar kelompok beragama jika kebenaran didikte pada satu kebenaran tunggal atas kelompoknya masing-masing. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan gagasan filsafat agama sebagai landasan berpikir logis dan memahami agama secara mendalam, universal dan komprehensif. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah kepustakaan (library research), yang memiliki tujuan yakni menelusuri dan menelaah suatu data atau informasi mengenai bahasan penelitian. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian ini didapatkan kesimpulan bahwa pemahaman tentang agama perlu dilandasi oleh nilai-nilai moderat hal ini sebagai upaya menciptakan keharmonisan antar umat beragama. This article uses historical methods, anthropological approaches, and acculturation theories of culture. This article is not only narrative-descriptive, but also analytical-descriptive. The findings in this article indicate that there are problems in the religious aspect that intersect with the local culture that develops in the community of Kampung Keramat Bekasi. Local people believe in mystical things, such as worship on petilasan and objects that are considered to have supernatural powers. Therefore, there are efforts from Muslims including the initiative of local scholars to eliminate these mystical beliefs with an Islamic acculturation approach. In the end, the mystical culture that is similar to animism-dynamism slowly fades and even disappears in the current contemporary era, on the other hand, the people around Kampung Keramat Bekasi also have the awareness to implement Islamic law based on the Qur'an and HadithAbstrak: Artikel ini merupakan penelitian sejarah yang bertujuan untuk menganalisis fenomena akulturasi Islam dan budaya mistik yang berada di Kampung Keramat Bekasi. Di dalam analisisnya, artikel ini menggunakan metode sejarah, pendekatan antropologi, serta teori akulturasi budaya. Dengan metodologi yang digunakan, artikel ini tidak hanya bersifat naratif-deskriptif, melainkan lebih kepada analitis-deskriptif. Temuan dalam artikel ini adalah terdapatnya permasalahan di dalam aspek keagamaan yang beririsan dengan budaya lokal yang berkembang di dalam masyarakat Kampung Keramat Bekasi. Budaya lokal yang melekat di dalam masyarakat setempat adalah adanya kepercayaan terhadap hal-hal mistis, seperti pemujaan di atas petilasan serta benda-benda yang dinilai memiliki kekuatan ghaib. Oleh karena itu, terdapat upaya dari umat Islam atas inisiatif ulama setempat untuk menghilangkan kepercayaan mistik tersebut dengan pendekatan akulturasi Islam. Quraish Shihab interprets the Qur'an on Najwa Shihab's Youtube Channel by responding to people's understanding of the Qur'an. This study aims to analyze the cultural structure of understanding and meaning depicted on Najwa Shihab's Youtube Channel. This study uses qualitative methods and content analysis as a data analysis tool. Meanwhile, the achievement of cultural analysis in language uses a structuralist anthropological approach introduced by Levi-Strauss. This study concludes that the explanation of meaning is carried out through two mechanisms; delegitimization as a critique of understanding and figurative as a meaning mechanism that is relevant to the understanding of new issues that exist. The delegitimization and figurative mechanisms used represent the actual cultural structure of meaning in Quraish Shihab and the puritanical and modernist-quasi-objective culture of understanding. The culture that is represented in the structure of meaning on social media shows another function of the representation of the Qur'an on Youtube as a medium of \"storage\" of culture that can be recognized through its explanation mechanism.Abstrak:  Pemaknaan terhadap al-Qur’an yang berlangsung di media sosial hadir dalam bentuk penjelasan secara oral dan lebih dialektis. Quraish Shihab menghadirkan penafsiran terhadap al-Qur’an di Channel Youtube Najwa Shihab dengan memberikan respon terhadap pemahaman masyarakat terhadap al-Qur’an yang berkembang. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis struktur budaya pemahaman dan pemaknaan yang tergambar pada Channel Youtube Najwa Shihab. Penelitian ini menggunakan metode kualitatif dengan content analysis sebagai perangkat analisa data. Sedangkan pencapaian analisa budaya dalam bahasa menggunakan pendekatan antropologi strukturalis yang dikenalkan Levi-Strauss. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa penjelasan terhadap makna dilakukan melalui dua mekanisme; delegitimasi sebagai kritik atas pemahaman dan figuratif sebagai mekanisme pemaknaan yang relevan dengan pemahaman isu baru yang berkembang. Mekanisme delegitimasi dan figuratif yang digunakan merepresentasikan struktur budaya pemaknaan yang aktual pada diri Quraish Shihab dan budaya pemahaman yang puritan dan modernis-quasi-objektif. Al-Isra':33 and HR. al-Bukhari: 983. This research method is descriptive qualitative with the type of library research. The results of this study indicate that the stereotipe of Islam as a religion of terrorism actually does not need to be created because Islamic teachings themselves do not recommend committing violence, especially acts of terror, this can be seen in Q.S. al-Isra':33 and HR. Al-Bukhari: 978. However, due to misinterpretation in understanding the meaning of jihad in Islam, this stereotipe emerges. Until finally, the stereotipe has continued until now, exacerbated by the existence of many political interest groups who act in the name of Islam to carry out jihad.Abstrak:  Tulisan ini bertujuan untuk membuktikan antitesis stereotip terorisme pada Islam akibat banyaknya kelompok terorisme yang menggunakan atribut Islam dalam aksinya dengan menelusuri latar belakang terbentuknya stereotip bahwa Islam sebagai agama terorisme dan antitesis stereotip tersebut melalui analisis Q.S. al-Isra’: 17: 33 dan H.R. al-Bukhari: 983. Metode penelitian ini adalah deskriptif kualitatif dengan jenis penelitian studi pustaka (library research). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa stereotip Islam sebagai agama terorisme sebenarnya tidak perlu diperbesar sebab Islam sendiri tidak pernah mengajarkan kekerasan, terlebih pertumpahan darah yang berujung pada kematian, terlebih melalui analisis QS. Al-Isra’: 33 dan HR. Al-Bukhari: 978. Namun, akibat misinterpretasi dalam memahami makna jihad dalam Islam, maka muncul stereotip tersebut. This study describes the work ethic to encourage human productivity to be useful for human life by referring to the Tafsir Mafatih al-Ghayb. This interpretation is one of the studies of in-depth understanding of the Qur'an with the background of the exegetes who are broad-minded not only in the field of kalam, philosophy of logic, and even linguistics. This research is qualitative with data collection techniques through a literature review, this research also uses a tahlili (synthesis) approach. The results of this study indicate that, first, the Qur'an encourages people to work. Second, the Qur'an emphasizes the work ethic aspect that is rooted in the syakilah, namely the soul, spiritual values and character as well as habits in life. Another aspect of work is to increase obedience and obedience to Allah.Abstrak:  Seorang muslim harus mengedepankan aspek-aspek spiritualitas dan moralitas dalam setiap pekerjaan yang mereka lakukan untuk mencapai hasil yang maksimal. Kenyataanya banyak aktivitas manusia yang tidak merujuk pada nilai-nilai tersebut sehingga terjadi output yang tidak maksimal dan kurang memiliki nilai manfaat bagi kehidupan manusia. Penelitian ini menguraikan tentang etos kerja untuk mendorong produktivitas manusia agar berguna bagi kehidupan manusia dengan merujuk pada Tafsir Mafatih al-Ghayb. Tafsir ini termasuk salah satu kajian pemahaman Alquran mendalam dengan background mufassirnya yang berwawasan luas tidak hanya dalam bidang ilmu kalam, filsafat logika bahkan ilmu bahasa. Penelitian bersifat kualitatif dengan teknik pengumpulan data melalui kajian literatur, penelitian ini juga menggunakan pendekatan tahlili (sintesis). Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa, pertama, Alquran mendorong manusia untuk bekerja. Madura has a great tourism potential that needs to be maximally improved in order to overcome its economic problems. However, given its socio-cultural context, Madura is not sufficiently receptive to tourism. Several factors, including the rejection of the kiais (religious leaders/teachers), have contributed to the underdevelopment of Madura’s tourism industry. In Madura, a kiai serves as a religious and social figure with considerable influence in Madurese society who adhere to the philosophy of Buppa', Babbu, Guru, Rato (“Father-Mother, Teacher, Government”). This qualitative research found a conflict of interests between two groups: the kiais as the guardian of culture and religion and the managers as a modern progressive group.
