Many organizations have performed applicable research in areas similar to this goal however, several basic questions about coupling remain unanswered. This paper presents a method which was used to evaluate coupling paths and potential mitigation techniques between onboard radio frequency (RF) transmitters located inside a commercial aircraft passenger compartment and the aircraft RF receivers, cables and avionics racks.","PeriodicalId":332554,"journal":{"name":"15th DASC. A typical cone is +/-60 degrees horizontal, and 0 to +30 degrees vertical. We used a Berreman 4/spl times/4 matrix based model to identify the necessary birefringent film values to optimize the display. The key parameter in the model was maximizing the region where the contrast ratio is greater than 50:1, without distorting the color gamut. We will show how well our current production units match our modeling results.","PeriodicalId":332554,"journal":{"name":"15th DASC. Determining the feasibility of an aircraft's flight profile will be a vital part of Free Flight (both pre-departure and enroute). Ensuring that a proposed flight profile will not cause potential conflicts with other aircraft in the airspace during the given time period is and will continue to be a critical part of Air Traffic Control. The focus of this paper is determining feasibility in Free Flight. A simple procedure for checking the feasibility of an aircraft's flight profile using distances between profile segments is discussed. An algorithm and pseudo-code are given for testing the feasibility of a proposed flight profile through airspace occupied by aircraft whose flight profiles have been previously approved.","PeriodicalId":332554,"journal":{"name":"15th DASC. This paper presents the avionics cost of ownership methodology developed for USAF, its data sources, and business metrics computed for USAF decision makers as we move toward operating avionics as a business. The business model is used to determine which existing avionics are candidates for replacement with new technology and to prioritize the replacements. These avionics are often used on multiple aircraft types which necessitates analysis of the causes of the high cost of ownership on each type. Databases are used to document the functions, and constraints of the item being analyzed. These constraints include physical, environmental, electrical, and data interfaces. Databases containing alternatives are evaluated against standard mission scenarios for aircraft utilizing these high cost avionics to determine their impact on performance, O&S costs, and mission effectiveness. The results of the foregoing analyses steps are then used in life cycle cost analyses which consider different retrofit scenarios for each alternative for each aircraft type against the avionics being analyzed for replacement. The alternatives are prioritized based on the foregoing and a risk analysis performed considering technical, schedule, and cost growth risks.","PeriodicalId":332554,"journal":{"name":"15th DASC. In many of these systems the software must be \"ultra-reliable\" (work the first time and every time) and produced within schedule and budget. In this paper, we will examine how an existing successful software verification and validation project incorporated commercial computer aided software engineering (CASE) tools. The paper examines the original approach, how CASE and new tool concepts have been incorporated within this approach, and some observed impacts to cost and quality. A final section identifies the challenges that were faced during development of the test system.","PeriodicalId":332554,"journal":{"name":"15th DASC. World Wide Web (WWW) technology was used to provide a consistent user interface to pre-existing interactive systems as well as new repositories and interactive services developed specifically for Cassini. A Web \"gateway\" was developed for each pre-existing data service. Each service had its unique requirements including read only and read and write access to SQL databases. Other requirements called for development of many background processes to handle the access of data produced by proprietary databases and non-database data repositories. Through the use of the WWW, anonymous ftp, Novell services, and unique data conversion programs, we were able to put the system into limited operation by August 1995 and full operation by March 1996.","PeriodicalId":332554,"journal":{"name":"15th DASC. The majority of the total cost to develop software is spent in the post-deployment-maintenance phase of the software life-cycle. In order to reduce life-cycle costs, more effort needs to be spent in earlier phases of the software life-cycle. One characteristic that merits investigation is the complexity of a software design. Project performance metrics (i.e. effort, schedule, defect density, etc.) are driven by software complexity, and affect project costs. The Software Design Complexity Measure examines an organization's historical project performance metrics along with the complexity of a project's software design to estimate future project performance metrics. These estimates indicate costs that the evaluated software design will incur in the future. Equipped with future cost estimates, a project manager will be able to make more informed decisions concerning the future of the project.","PeriodicalId":332554,"journal":{"name":"15th DASC. Of chief interest is the (1) identification of the attributes of 3-D approaches and quantitative performance metrics; (2) packaging medium and facilitation (e.g. thermal, mechanical, and electrical access) requirements; and the manifestation of certain regimes in 3-D packaging (e.g., \"few-layers\" vs. \"many-layers\"). The development of the taxonomy is further motivated by the discussion of 3-D heterogeneous packaging approaches as an ideal framework for packaging and interconnecting complex mixtures of analog, digital, sensor, microwave, and power management functional elements.","PeriodicalId":332554,"journal":{"name":"15th DASC.
