This experimental research discovers that positive effects suggested by excitation transfer and framing theories can apply specifically to radio advertising. It also extends previous research beyond the American context. Although gender sometimes leads to differences in humor appreciation, no important differences were identified in this research. Indirect links between humorous advertisements and potential audience ratings are uncovered, although direct links were not proven.","PeriodicalId":331997,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Radio Studies","volume":"13 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126065599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The “Mother Road” has been documented in story and song, in books, films, radio, and television documentaries. In choosing this subject, Dunaway sets himself a formidable task to bring something new to the meaning of the Great American Road. This documentary series proves that Dunaway is up to the task. Applying a historian’s eye (and ear) for detail to the colorful stories and insights of dozens of sources, Dunaway has assembled a broad cultural narrative of Route 66, related through the memories of travelers and residents and the through insights of historians, sociologists, and artists. Program 1, Route 66 Forever, relates the highway’s history, from its 19th-century railroad-era roots to its eventual demise at the hands of the Interstate Highway System. Program 2, Prairies & Plains, explores the history and culture of the road’s eastern portion, from Chicago to Texas, whereas Program 3, Mountains & Desert, takes a similar approach to the southwestern portion of the route between New Mexico and Los Angeles. Although the programs recall the nostalgia of American automobile travel, Dunaway moves beyond this romantic story to explore the cultural collisions and conflicts that took place along this 2,500-mile corridor that linked major urban centers with previously isolated small towns. In addition to the familiar tales of Woody Guthrie, Bob Wills, and Orson Welles, the programs feature the voices of African Americans, Latinos, and Native people who were caught up in the cultural divisions that came to life along the highway. Hollywood actor Martin Milner, most famous for his role in the Route 66 television series, narrates the programs. Milner’s brash, rambling style is appropriate to the documentary’s western theme, although the voice of the uncredited narrator (presumably Dunaway) seems more reflective and authoritative and might have been a better choice given the mood and depth of the programs. The editing is crisp, and the music track features many obscure gems that were inspired by America’s love of cars, travel, and the west. That love affair may now be coming to a close: The price of gas threatens to end our romance with the automobile. Luckily, Dunaway’s research and presentation can help us remember a time when gas was 25¢ a gallon, and the road west always led to a world of unknown possibilities.","PeriodicalId":331997,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Radio Studies","volume":"161 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134178293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A by-product of Lyndon Johnson’s Great Society initiatives, NPR has persevered in the environment of a vehemently commercial industry to achieve preeminent status in American radio news. In NPR, McCauley charts the network’s beginnings and its rise to prominence, and he analyzes the company’s contributions to American mass media and society. Exhibiting his skills as a reporter, McCauley draws on an extensive body of original oral histories, historic texts, and contemporary sources to weave a concise institutional history of the “lyceum of the airwaves” (p. 1). NPR provides a tight, fact-laden account of the network’s founders, leaders, and most recognizable personalities. For the most part, McCauley forgoes discussion of the political and cultural forces that led to the formation of the network (such as the influence of the BBC as a model for news coverage). Similarly, McCauley does not attempt to chronicle the history of NPR’s many programs or the influences that programs such as All Things Considered and Performance Today have had on American culture. Rather, he undertakes a brisk, chronological account of the company’s development, followed by summative analysis of the network’s importance as a mass media institution. McCauley is at his best when he narrates the central political issues that have shaped NPR—the tussles over the network’s intended mission, the tension between news and arts programming, and the ever-present questions about the nature and size of its audience. He effectively captures the strong personalities of some of the founders, distilling the conflicts over program production and control that arose at the network’s creation. He does a particularly good job of delineating the causes and effects of NPR’s debt crisis in 1983, offering a balanced narrative that covers both the management issues and the surrounding circumstances of this pivotal event in the network’s history. McCauley is equally good when he discusses the concepts of brand equity and loyalty, and the network’s evolving approach to audience identification and marketing. The conclusion is a sophisticated and well-reasoned justification of how NPR serves listeners. McCauley argues that NPR has not only succeeded but also excelled in its efforts to serve its intended audience. He makes it clear, however, that he is a fan and a member of the particular demographic that finds NPR appealing. Although his candor lends authenticity to the analysis, McCauley’s descriptions of “NPR’s Stars” occasionally exhibit a quality of reverence. However, these moments are sparse in the context of the entire book. Although McCauley admits that he is a textbook example","PeriodicalId":331997,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Radio Studies","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121208726","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It especially highlights the plight of radio broadcasters, for they are the most frequent victims of violence done to journalists by powerful individuals who had been subjects of critical media coverage. The article examines the causes and effects behind the continuing bloodshed. It describes the role of radio in Philippine rural society and explains the interplay among crime, politics, media ownership, and the prevailing social realities on the ground—factors that perpetuate the ongoing violence. Finally, the article explores possible courses of action that will help stem the increasing dangers among people working for the Philippine media.","PeriodicalId":331997,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Radio Studies","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127626304","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In fact, Doerksen has done much more. American Babel chronicles some of the most remarkable stations and personalities in broadcast history. The book provides a wealth of information regarding the social context of early radio. Doerksen has revealed how socioeconomic standing influenced attitudes about advertising and programming. Above all, he has exposed the volatile utopianism that surrounded the birth of broadcasting and the bitterness of the warfare over proper cultural content. In seven chapters, we are given scholarly accounts of previously overlooked stations and controversial radio personalities who made significant contributions to radio history. The following are highlights pertaining to the stations and individuals profiled by Doerksen. In the first chapter, titled “The Education of Frank Bannister,” we read of the tribulation of a salesman who entered the radio business and found that a pyramid of prestige existed among stations. Some were characterized as “cheap” or low class, whereas others were “high class.” A station’s place in the hierarchy depended on its programming and advertising. Disapproval of advertising and common music such as jazz or country was a class attribute correlated to economic and educational status. Lower class listeners overwhelmingly preferred entertainment to “cultural” programs. Bannister observed the highbrow standards of discretion at WWJ, an NBC affiliate. WWJ management claimed “a good radio station had to be run at a loss. Commercialism ... would impair the entertainment value of programs and lose audiences” (p. 3). “Serving the Masses, Not the Classes” is the second chapter. The title is a spin-off slogan from George Schubel’s New York City-operated WHN radio station. Seeking revenue to keep his start-up station going, WHN began to broadcast vaudeville acts. Known as “cabaret broadcasting,” telephone hookups were used from speakeasies, and some of the clubs were controlled by organized crime. Responding to the station’s lack of gravitas, Nils Thor Granlund, who arranged WHN programming, offered no apologies: “The policy of the station is not to educate the masses. ... Let someone else elevate them” (p. 27). Granlund also instituted payola to gain additional revenue. Pay-for-play arrangements were already common in the 1920s. Chapter 3, “Brows High and Fevered,” tells the story of WHAP, an independent station that joined the 1925 crowded airwaves in New York City. WHAP defined itself as the antithesis to stations like WHN. WHAP blossomed forth as a purely philanthropic station behind the financial support of railcar factory millionaire William H. Taylor. Doerksen surveys the transformation of WHAP from a station of elite cultural pro-","PeriodicalId":331997,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Radio Studies","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130222601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite fame for satire in the 1950s and for his pioneering advertising work in the ’60s, Freberg’s first professional love has been radio. Beginning with a childhood fascination with the medium, Freberg did radio voice acting early in his career, appeared on the last network comedy show at the end of radio’s Golden Age, and applied skillful audio techniques to his famed comedy records once regularly heard on radio. Influenced by masters such as Fred Allen and Jack Benny, Freberg has in turn influenced several generations of media people.","PeriodicalId":331997,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Radio Studies","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131097383","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Initially, the intention was to use the service to build goodwill with audiences in the Pacific region and overseas. However, over the years the New Zealand government has shown anything but goodwill to the service. Frequent funding cuts and general lack of support rendered the service all but obsolete by the 1980s. It took a military coup on the island of Fiji in 1987 for the New Zealand government to realize it had no strong broadcasting voice in the region. The coup became the catalyst for the rebirth of New Zealand's shortwave service, now renamed Radio New Zealand International. This article examines the history of Radio New Zealand International, as well as the role it has played, and currently plays, in the Pacific region.","PeriodicalId":331997,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Radio Studies","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2006-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121992481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
