Such pulsed electric fields are produced by high voltage, high peak current and fast rise-time pulses applied to a chamber with liquid passing through it. Due to the nature of the short pulses the processes is nonthermal; hence, it helps to save the nutritional values of the treated food as well as its taste. Thus PEF treatment is considered as a good alternative to the conventional pasteurization treatments that are thermal processes. The aim of this work is to study the effect of design parameters such as switch type, gate drive circuit, and circuit configuration on the output voltage rise and fall times using a newly developed solid state pulsed generator. The paper presents the results obtained from treating liquid samples whose electrical conductivities fall in the range of a variety of liquid foods, using a variable 0–6 kV, with 3µs flat-top pulses; and rise-time of 70–1000ns. The peak current rating of the pulse generator 1500A, can sustain the heavy loading due to the high conductivities of the treated samples.","PeriodicalId":331835,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Pulsed Power Conference","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125200905","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through multistage inductively insulated voltage adders, the output pulse, increased in voltage amplitude, can be applied directly to the load. Because the output pulse rise time and width can be easily tailored (pulse shaped) to the specific application needs, the load may be a vacuum electron diode, a z-pinch wire array, a gas puff, a liner, an isentropic compression load (ICE) to study material behavior under very high magnetic fields, or a fusion energy (IFE) target. Ten 1-MA LTD cavities were originally designed and built to run in a vacuum or Magnetic Insulated Transmission Line (MITL) voltage adder configuration and, after successful operation in this mode, were modified and made capable to operate assembled in a de-ionized water insulated voltage adder. Special care has been taken to de-aerate the water and eliminate air bubbles. Our motivation is to test the advantages of water insulation compared to the MITL transmission approach. The desired effect is that the vacuum sheath electron current losses and pulse front erosion would be avoided without any new difficulties caused by the de-ionized water insulator. Presently, we have assembled and are testing a two-cavity, water insulated voltage adder with a liquid resistor load. Experimental results of up to 95kV capacitor charging are presented and compared with circuit code simulations.","PeriodicalId":331835,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Pulsed Power Conference","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125465572","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system includes high voltage dividers, current transformers, an oscilloscope, and a laptop to run software. The high voltage divider is based on a series configuration of high and low resistivity resistors made from de-ionized water. The current transformers used represent standard devices. The process to measure pulsed parameters consists of timed linear gating of the signals, calculating average signal amplitude, graphically displaying data, and storing data for later analysis. The acquisition and processing software is built in the LabVIEW environment. The results of the evaluation of this system are presented in this report.","PeriodicalId":331835,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Pulsed Power Conference","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129803064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Experiments for testing its breakdown characteristics have been performed on the platform named ARC-01 with the ability to output repetitive pulses. Test of Breakdown characteristics under repetitively pulsed condition with various frequencies and pulse numbers has been carried out. The results indicate that the configuration design of electrode has a significant effect on the performance of the ceramic strength. To avoid the field enhancement points and find an optimized profile of electrode, some different electrodes have been studied. The impact of higher testing pulse frequency over longer time on the breakdown strength is significant, implying a high dielectric loss factor for the applications.","PeriodicalId":331835,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Pulsed Power Conference","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129848495","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, helical antennas can be impulse excited, producing several cycles of resonant energy at a designed frequency, or resonantly-driven by a frequency matched resonator. Applied Physical Electronics, L.C. has previously reported results from impulse excited helical antennas. Those efforts have been continued to result in a family of interchangeable antennas sourced by a common compact pulse power source. Moreover, requirements of these applications are repetitive operation and fast risetime voltage. Recently, semiconductor power device technology has improved the performance of fast high voltage switching and low switching loss. In particular, insulated gate bipolar transistor (IGBT) is highly efficient semiconductor switching device. However, the IGBT switch is still not sufficient to drive the pulse laser and the pulse ozonizer itself. In practical systems, semiconductor switches are used with the assistance of magnetic switches. We have studied and developed high repetition rate small size pulsed power generator for generation of discharge plasma. This generator consists of an IGBT switch circuit, a step-up pulse transformer and multi-stage magnetic pulse compression circuit (MPC) at the last magnetic pulse compression stage, has a coaxial configuration. This fast-rising pulsed power generator using a coaxial MPC has been developed for fast rise time output current. We use two kinds of magnetic core materials, a Co-based amorphous alloy and a nanocrystalline Fe-based soft magnetic alloy. Two kinds of magnetic cores were investigated in the coaxial MPC to evaluate loss of the magnetic cores, leakage current of saturable inductors, and circuit inductance. The pulsed power generator produced a pulsed-high-current of 3.7 kA with a rise time of 7 ns at a repetition rate of 1000 pulses per second (pps). This generator is able to generate an output voltage of about 20 kV with voltage rise time of less than 10 ns. We did the operation test and generate the streamer discharge with 1000 pps.","PeriodicalId":331835,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Pulsed Power Conference","volume":"222 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131588872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The railgun drives a free running hypervelocity plasma arc, one that is not pushing a payload, to velocities in excess of 10 km/s. These high velocities are of interest as they are required to successfully launch payloads into low earth orbit (LEO). The ability to launch payloads into LEO using a hypervelocity electromagnetic launcher has many financial benefits over the more conventional chemical combustion launchers. In collaboration on an Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR) funded Multidisciplinary University Research Initiative (MURI) project, the Center for Pulsed Power and Power Electronics (P3E) at Texas Tech University in Lubbock. Texas has been responsible for developing and investigating a functional scale model of a multi-stage DES railgun to determine its effectiveness to suppress restrike phenomenon and increase plasma armature railgun performance. The distributed energy scheme is theorized to suppress restrike arc formation because the back emf voltage is localized to active stage regions. B-dot sensors positioned along the length of the launcher provide data to measure the plasma arc velocity and detect restrike, arc splitting, or additional secondary arc formation phenomena.","PeriodicalId":331835,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE Pulsed Power Conference","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-06-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125634020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper describes a compact and portable, 100 kA driver that was assembled and tested with Mather type plasma focus electrodes. The pulsed power system described here is composed of two parallel modules, each of which is based on a hydrogen thyratron switched, 6∶1 step-down transformer. The source is designed to operate at a primary voltage of 10–30 kV with a stored bank energy of 15 J to 136 J and a pulse repetition rate of up to 50 Hz. The overall volume occupied by the source is < 1 m3. The plasma focus anode is water cooled to limit the temperature rise at the anode tip during repetitive operation.
