Neuber","doi":"10.1109/PPC.2011.6191411","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/PPC.2011.6191411","url":null,"abstract":"Ferrite loaded nonlinear transmission lines (NLTLs) are able to act as high power microwave sources, utilizing the nonlinearities present in ferrimagnetic materials and the excitation of damped gyromagnetic precession at high incident power levels. Ferrimagnetic properties depend greatly on operating temperatures; therefore, there exists a need to know the ideal temperature at which to operate ferrite loaded NLTLs. Ferrites are chilled or heated to a certain temperature for a time suitable to allow internal ferrite temperature uniformity. Experimental temperatures ranged from approximately −20 °C up to 150 °C, which is slightly above the Curie temperature of the loaded ferrites. This temperature range allows observation of precession dependence on temperature while maintaining ferrimagnetic properties and a single look at the behavior outside the ferrimagnetic regime. Above the Curie temperature the loaded ferrites become paramagnetic and lose ferrimagnetic properties. The design, testing, and results are detailed for an NLTL measuring 0.3 m length and ferrite inner and outer diameters of 3 mm and 6 mm respectively. The generator can drive a load having a resistance of between 10 Ω and 40 Ω and a self-inductance between 10 µH and 30 µH, using conventional inductive storage techniques that include a high-voltage transformer (HVT) with a coupling coefficient of about 0.8 and capable of withstanding up to 600 kV. An exploding wire array (EWA) is used as an opening switch in the primary circuit and a self-breakdown closing switch (operating under pressurised SF6) is implemented in the secondary (load) circuit to condition the output,. The APU model is integrated into a main power channel of a VSCF aircraft electric power system at the high voltage DC bus. The transient performance of the integrated aircraft electric power system is studied under a large share of nonlinear loads. Moreover, the fuel cell based APU integrated model is extended to study the performance of the AEPS under nonlinear loading along with fully controlled shunt power filters. Several time-domain voltage and current profiles are obtained and investigated. They are used in substation buildings, transformers, locomotives, and switchgear. Bushings cause more than 15% of transformer failures. The main purpose of a bushing is to transfer load currents in and out of metal (grounded) enclosures at system voltages. The insulation system breaks down, causes bushing failure results in catastrophic event such as tank rupture, violent explosion of the bushing and fire. Clearly, the risk and likelihood of collateral and personnel damage is a major concern in such an eventuality. This research is undertaken to study and diagnosis of the power transformer bushing insulation system and in-field measurement of power-factor and capacitance using the Doble M4100 insulation analyzer. For pulse power applications, SiC Gate Turn-Off thyristors (GTOs) have been pursued as a substitute for present silicon-based, pulsed-power switches. An update on the device's performance since the pulse work presented at the 2009 Pulse Power Conference is highlighted in this paper. Detailed reviews of the development history, state of the art, and future perspective for developing 15 kV SiC GTOs are provided. At the University of Missouri, the effect of adding output circuits to bipolar piezoelectric transformers is being studied. These piezoelectric transformers produce output voltages in excess of 25 kV from medium-voltage, radio frequency inputs. However, the high output voltage and low output current of these devices can make it difficult to acquire an accurate electrical measurement of the output voltage without affecting the transformer ratio or resonance of the device. The studies were conducted at the TEMP-4M ion accelerator set in double pulse formation mode: the first pulse was negative (300–500 ns and 100–150 kV) and the second positive (150 ns, 250–300 kV). The ion current density was 20–40 A/cm2; the beam composition was protons and carbon (70%) ions. It was shown that plasma is effectively formed over the entire working surface of the graphite potential electrode. During the ion beam generation a condition of magnetic cutoff of electrons along the entire length of the diode (B/Bcr ≥ 4) is fulfilled. Because of the high drift rate the residence time of the electrons and protons in the anode-cathode gap is 3‒5 ns, while for the C+ ions it is more than 8 ns. This denotes low efficiency of magnetic self-insulation in a diode of such a design. At the same time it has been experimentally observed that during the generation of ion current (second pulse) the electronic component of the total current is suppressed by a factor of 1.5–2 for a strip diode with plane and focusing geometry. Three types of closing switch which included a triggered vacuum switch (TVS) and two air spark gaps (ASGs) named ASG-1, ASG-2 and ASG-3 with different configuration in trigger unit were described for investigating the delay characteristics, high current capacity and erosion characteristics. A LC resonant circuit was set up and connected with the TVS's and ASG's main electrodes. A design circuit for controlling the TVS and ASGs was proposed. The trigger energy of the controller can be adjusted conveniently. By means of changing the trigger energy, the experimental data show that the delay time and jitter time decrease with increasing the trigger energy. The delay time and jitter time decreases magnificently with increasing the voltage in main gap. The improvement in the structure and controller of the TVS and ASG is a good way of decreasing the delay time and jitter time. It shows that TVS-2 has better performance in delay time and jitter time than TVS-1. Generally, ARG-2 and ARG-3 have shorter delay time than TVS-1 and TVS-2, as the initial plasma would be generated much more easily and quickly in the air than that in the vacuum case. ASG has a shorter delay time and lower needed minimum breakdown voltage than TVS. The role of self-produced VUV emission (i.e. energies greater than 7 eV) on photo-ionization processes during the early nanoseconds of pulsed discharges is virtually unexplored, and yet could be a significant factor in the physics of fast breakdown of directed energy systems (such as MW-class high power microwave devices) in the aerospace community. First generation experiments at Texas Tech University have shown that VUV emission corresponding to nitrogen and oxygen excitation in the energy range 8-10 eV is easily produced, but the use of MgF2 optics inhibited future work with existing hardware due to the transmission cutoff of this dielectric material and chromatic aberration if used as a lensing medium. In an effort to enhance the detection capabilities of our hardware in the wavelength range from 115-135 nm, the current system utilizes a custom designed set of off-axis parabolic MgF2-Aluminium coated mirrors as the primary focusing element. High resolution spectroscopy with the upgraded system resulted in the observation of the nitrogen doublet at 149.5 nm, leading to a better fit for the appropriate line broadening parameters for an approximate 10 eV Boltzmann electronic temperature.
