As a help for hymnographical studies, I propose to create a base, consisting of each hymn with notes related to its text-version in different types of manuscripts and its place in every manuscript. {"title":"The Acrostic Version of the Slavonic Translation of Two George Skylitzes’ Canons for St. John of Rila","authors":"Sergejus Temčinas","doi":"10.31168/2658-3372.2021.21.14","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.31168/2658-3372.2021.21.14","url":null,"abstract":"The modern liturgical “Green Menaia”, published by the Moscow Patriarchate in 1978–1989 and reprinted with additions in 2002, as part of the Service of St. John of Rilа (August 18) includes a Slavonic translation of the complete Octoechos cycle of canons for this Bulgarian saint, composed in Greek by George Skylitzes in the second half of the 12th century (the canon of the 1st tone is included in the service, and the rest are given in the appendix to it). In addition, the same canon of the 8th tone, but without the rest of the canons of the cycle, is contained in the service to the Transfer of the relics of St. John of Rila (October 19) of the same Menaia. The Greek original of this cycle remains unknown, and its medieval Slavonic translation (originated in Bulgaria) is known from merely two complete manuscript copies of the Rila Monastery, although individual canons are read in more manuscripts. The scholarly edition of the cycle was produced by L. Nenova in 2012, therefore the “Green Menaia” should be considered their first (although not scholarly, a liturgical) publication. Here, the text of the Slavonic translation is edited, and in the first and last canons arbitrary Slavonic acrostics are additionally inscribed, which have nothing to do with the textual history of these canons: ДИВЕН БОГ ВО СВЯТИХ СВОИХ БОГ ИСРАИЛЕВ (the canon of the 1st tone); РАДУИСЯ ИОАННЕ СВЕТИЛНИЧЕ ПРЕСВЕТЛИИ (the canon of the 8th tone). The acrostics were composed by rearranging words and making short additions at the beginning of the troparia, therefore this version should be considered a separate (acrostic) edition of the Slavonic translation of George Skylitzes’ canons for St. John of Rila. At least one of the two Rila manuscripts must have served as a basis for this version, created specifically for the “Green Menaia”. Despite its late origin, it clearly demonstrates the possibility of a secondary introduction of a Slavic acrostic into the Slavonic translation of a Byzantine canon, which is to be considered when studying the earliest Slavic hymnography.","PeriodicalId":330704,"journal":{"name":"Palaeoslavistica: Lexicology and Textology. The word дръколь has a fairly long history of use in the Old Bulgarian monuments. Already in the ancient era, before the fall of the reduced vowels in the Old Bulgarian language, a variant дръголь appears and spreads in Middle Bulgarian manuscripts, its continuant probably is Bulgarian dialect word др̀ъгол. Continuants of *drъcolь are presented in South Slavonic languages, while Czech preserved derived from *drъcolь words ascending to дръколне and дръколна. Gospel text of the Old Czech Bible has nothing to do with the translation of Cyril and Methodius. It is customary to date the manuscript to the XV century (with clarification – the beginning or the first half of the century). There is an opinion expressed almost 40 years ago by an authoritative Bulgarian paleographer that the fragment is of Wallachian-Moldavian origin. The author believes that the monument was painted in western Bulgaria in the first half or middle of the XIV century. The monastery is believed to have been founded in 1436. The copy of the Inventory of the Solovetsky Library from 1514, discovered by M. V. Kukushkina, testifies that the books from the time of its first trustees constituted its original core. Abbot Dositey, who commissioned the copying of 24 manuscripts in Novgorod, has exceptional merits in the filling of the library. In 1514, the library already had 127 manuscripts, and by the end of the century – 481 manuscripts and 38 printed books. In the following centuries, the book wealth of the monastery gradually increased. Among its books there were many transcripts of Slavic sources about Cyril and Methodius and their disciples – according to the latest data there are 30. Their composition is quite diverse: here we find transcripts of the Long Lives of Cyril and Methodius, the Encomium for Cyril and Methodius, the Prologue of John the Exarch to the translation of John Damascene's Theology, Chernorizets Hrabar's treatise “On the Letters”, Tudor Doksov's note on the translation of Anastasius of Alexandria’s “Four Words Against the Arians”, The Prologue Lives of Cyril and Methodius. The study of the transcripts of the Slavic sources about Cyril and Methodius preserved in the library of the Solovetsky Monastery shows that the earliest of them belong to the earliest layer of manuscripts, which marked the beginning of the library, fixing different manuscript traditions regarding the composition of the manuscripts. It is pointed out that the reason for such a choice is related to the ways in which the toponyms are functioning in the biblical text. Often, they are not more than names given to certain places but sometimes they have a more far-reaching meaning. This is particularly true when they receive a function in aetiological context that offers a short explanation of the name. Besides, the place names are often used with a double entendre – on the one hand, the author uses them as toponyms and on the other he aims to explain or characterize the specific nature of the place. The discussed Old Bulgarian names of ancient Beersheba once again raise the question of the identification of certain word groups as lexical units. Attention is drawn to other multi-word nominations for places used in various Old Testament books.
