However, it is easy to cause compassion fatigue for counselors with the sudden increase in consultations. Therefore, it is essential to pay attention to the compassion fatigue of counselors in epidemic counseling situations and assist counselors in regulating their state. In this study, we performed semi-structured interviews with nine counselors and focused groups with five counselor supervisors based on the context of online psychological counseling during the epidemic. The results show counselors expected compassion fatigue to be relieved by habit-forming, less physical exertion and quick emotional smoothing. Then we designed a product using ‘Face++’ for facial recognition to achieve fatigue arousal and smart hardware to achieve meditation function. Finally, we performed the usability tests with eight counselors to optimize the design.","PeriodicalId":321721,"journal":{"name":"The Ninth International Symposium of Chinese CHI","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132337474","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In an immersive space we exhibited a series new media artworks based on autism spectrum disorder (ASD). This project was dedicated to popularizing autism knowledge to the general public. Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a heritable, lifelong neurodevelopmental disorder with complicated causes and courses [1]. This project used visual, auditory, interactive tactile experience to give participants a deep understanding of autism in a short period. The exhibition works included an experimental video, an interactive installation and a robot for children with autism. Video presented a story about autistic boy by stop-motion animation, and popularized the common sense of autism. The design of the interactive installation was based on the scene of stop-motion animation, which strengthened the cognition of the characteristics of autism. Finally, there was a robot specially designed for children with autism, allowing participants to assume the role of children with autism, and getting closer to the real life of children with autism by experiencing the interaction of the robot's turn-based teaching. After the experience, participants not only had a deep understanding of autism, but also been willing to help children with autism and gave them more care, tolerance, and love.","PeriodicalId":321721,"journal":{"name":"The Ninth International Symposium of Chinese CHI","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129171532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Bio response System detecting stress and the techniques with potential to distinguish pain from stress suggest the possibility to detect pain with physiological data. In the current paper, we propose the design of a peripheral display for making caregivers aware of the real-time pain condition of their clients without added attention burden. An iterative user-centered design process resulted in two prototypes and corresponding evaluations of one peripheral display. The potential of the display to help caregivers be promptly aware of the pain condition of clients was tested with targeted users. Guidelines for the design of peripheral display applications in similar semi-hospitalized contexts are provided. Further steps in this study will be to test the adjusted Bio response System for detecting pain in persons with SID adequately.","PeriodicalId":321721,"journal":{"name":"The Ninth International Symposium of Chinese CHI","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133533613","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conventionally, the game experts achieve their purposes through intensive user studies with target players or iterative UI design processes, which can not capture interaction patterns of large-scale individual players. Visualizing the recorded logs of users’ UI operations is a promising way for quantitatively understanding the interaction patterns. However, few visualization tools have been developed for mobile game app interaction, which is challenging with multi-touch dynamic operations and complex UI. In this work, we fill the gap by presenting a visualization approach that aims to understand players’ interaction patterns in a multi-touch gaming app with more complex interactions supported by joysticks and a series of skill buttons. Particularly, we identify players’ dynamic gesture patterns, inspect the similarities and differences of gesture behaviors, and explore the potential gaps between the current mobile game app UI design and the real-world practice of players. Three case studies indicate that our approach is promising and can be potentially complementary to theoretical UI designs for further research.","PeriodicalId":321721,"journal":{"name":"The Ninth International Symposium of Chinese CHI","volume":"115 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132045287","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But when GLAs are carried out online, they may face challenges such as a reduced sense of social presence. Social virtual reality (VR) that enables a group of people to interact in virtual space could better support social presence than the video conferencing systems commonly used for online courses. However, few works explore the use of social VR for online GLAs. In this paper, we conduct a co-design study with five small groups of students in an online course to investigate user experience and design opportunities of desktop-based social VR for GLAs. Participants experience a desktop social VR platform Mozilla Hubs in their group projects and use techniques like storyboarding and prototyping to propose new social VR designs to support GLAs. We contribute design ideas about social VR applications that support various kinds of online GLAs.","PeriodicalId":321721,"journal":{"name":"The Ninth International Symposium of Chinese CHI","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132431293","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, making the right decision can be overwhelming caused by the lack of or too much information, especially for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) majors. The advancement of artificial intelligence (AI) and conversational agents, such as chatbots, has provided opportunities for assisting student learning. Originally used in messaging systems and customer service, chatbots have currently also been used in various fields such as health, human resources, and education. In this work in progress, we investigated the use of chatbots in higher education, especially in academic and career counseling services. We designed and implemented a chatbot called CASExplorer (career, academic, and self-explorer) to assist college students in STEM fields in learning about their majors and discovering related careers that match the students’ personality strengths.","PeriodicalId":321721,"journal":{"name":"The Ninth International Symposium of Chinese CHI","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129098809","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the navigation situation, drivers need to receive navigation information to make correct driving behavior, but this may increase drivers’ workload. The current display includes visual display, auditory display, and haptic display, but they have limitations. In order to solve the above problems and provide more suggestions for driving safety, this research explored the effectiveness of multimodal display and its merits than unimodal display in the navigation situation, dependent variables are driving behavior performance and subjective mental workload, eye tracking behavior. We adopted interview to explore current navigation situations and classified lane changing and turning have high workload than straight driving. The simulated driving experiment conducted in the later stage of research, it is 2 × 5 mixed experiment, the between-subjects factors are navigation situations (high load, low load), and the within-subjects’ factors are information display methods (visual, auditory, haptic, multimodal, control). The experiment recruited 18 participants and randomly divided them into two groups to experience each information display in turn. It is found that the multimodal display is good than visual modality under high load situations, and the lateral speed control of the driver is more stable under the multimodal condition. Although the mental workload of drivers under multimodal conditions did not show a significant difference from other conditions, the scores were still lower than other conditions. The multimodal display has the potential to ensure driving safety, but it need further research to discuss.","PeriodicalId":321721,"journal":{"name":"The Ninth International Symposium of Chinese CHI","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127481181","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The appearance of intangible cultural heritage experience courses meets the demand of intangible cultural heritage enthusiasts for experiential learning to a certain extent, which plays a positive role in promoting the protection and inheritance of intangible cultural heritage. However, there is no systematic research and design specification on how to convey the intangible cultural heritage knowledge and value in experiential courses, which leads to learners' emphasis on the experiential process and lack of cognition of the content of intangible cultural heritage itself. In this research, learners will build personalized knowledge system for intangible cultural heritage based on embodied interaction. Immersive virtual reality will be applied in the classroom as a teaching tool to enable learners to do embodied creation practice. Through practice and qualitative analysis, it has been proved that this method deepens learners' cognition of intangible cultural heritage and learners can complete high-quality artworks.","PeriodicalId":321721,"journal":{"name":"The Ninth International Symposium of Chinese CHI","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114604826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A popular scheme for eye gaze estimation in literature uses some infrared (IR) lights to illuminate the eyes while an IR camera captures the images, and the essential step in this scheme is to locate the glints on the cornea illuminated by the IR lights (called corneal reflections) and to match them to the corresponding IR lights. However, corneal reflections are often dim or even absent, and together with other image quality issues, the accuracy and continuity of a gaze estimation system can be severely impaired. Addressing the above problems, this paper designs a new gaze estimation hardware system, and then proposes a lightweight deep neural network for real-time localization and matching of corneal reflections, which can be simply deployed in the designed hardware system. This network, inspired by keypoint detection, can simultaneously locate corneal reflections and match them to the corresponding IR lights. It also merges the two tasks of locating the pupil center and locating the corneal reflections through an attention module. Experiments show the proposed network achieves better performances on localization and matching corneal reflections in comparison to a state-of-the-art method. And additionally, our designed system is able to provide accurate and continuous gaze estimation for real-time applications.","PeriodicalId":321721,"journal":{"name":"The Ninth International Symposium of Chinese CHI","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-10-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127720550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
