Exploring the cognitive process of prospective mathematics teachers in constructing a graph 探讨准数学教师建构图形的认知过程

Forty-four PMTs participated in graph construction tasks (GCT) of composition function. Four of them were purposively selected as the subjects. Data were collected through subjects' works on GCT and interviews based on their works. Data analysis started with organizing subjects' construction of the graph and transcribing the results of the interview. We then explored and coded the subjects' constructed graphs, followed by describing the subjects' strategies and structure of the cognitive process of graph construction and establishing themes, representing and reporting the findings with tables, schemes and narratives, interpreting the findings, and validating the accuracy of the findings by triangulation of the data sources. We found (1) two strategies used by the subjects in constructing graph namely with-translation and without-translation; and (2) the translation process in constructing the graphs begins by unpacking the source representation, preliminary coordination, constructing the target representation and end with determining the equivalence between the source representation and the target representation. The findings indicate that there are transfer variations in conceptual content from micro-concepts of source representation to micro-concepts of target representation. The variations are caused by the differences in the types of mapping carried out at the initial coordination stage. \u0000Keywords: Cognitive process, Graph construction, Prospective mathematics teacher, Composition function \u0000[Bahasa]: Artikel ini bertujuan menganalisis strategi dan proses kognitif mahasiswa calon guru matematika dalam mengonstruksi grafik fungsi komposisi. Empat puluh empat calon guru menyelesaikan tugas konstruksi grafik (GCT) fungsi komposisi kemudian empat orang dipilih sebagai subjek. Data penelitian dikumpulkan melalui hasil kerja subjek pada GCT dan wawancara berdasarkan hasil kerja. Analisis data dimulai dengan mengelompokkan hasil konstruksi grafik oleh subjek dan membuat transkrip wawancara.  Peneliti kemudian mengeksplorasi dan membuat kode hasil konstruksi grafik, menjelaskan strategi dan struktur proses kognitif subjek dalam mengonstruksi grafik, membuat tema berdasarkan strategi dan proses kognitif. Selanjutnya, peneliti menggunakan tabel, skema dan narasi untuk menampilkan dan melaporkan temuan penelitian, menafsirkan temuan penelitian dan melakukan validasi hasil penelitian dengan triangulasi sumber data. Having misconceptions in understanding the prerequisite concepts will hamper the acquisition and integration of new knowledge. The purpose of this study was to develop refutation text to resolve the misconception of students in addition and subtraction of integers. Refutation text was developed in the form of student worksheet adopting the development model from Borg and Gall (1983). Tryout of refutation text involved fifteen seventh-grade students. The study found that (1) The experts’ validation reveals that refutation text is suitable to be used as learning media for students on addition and subtraction of integers; (2) The refutation text implemented in the tryout was useful to resolve students’ misconception in addition and subtraction of integers; and (3) The practitioner’s assessment and students’ response showed that refutation text is practical. Drawing from the findings, we argue that the developed refutation text help students correcting their misconceptions in the topics and could be used by the teachers in the classroom practices. However, the refutation text needs to be extended to anticipate students’ mistake in interpreting word problems by providing some possible mistakes and its correction. \u0000Keywords: Misconceptions, Refutation text, Integers \u0000[Bahasa]: Miskonsepsi siswa dalam penjumlahan dan pengurangan bilangan bulat perlu diatasi karena materi ini merupakan prasyarat bagi siswa untuk mempelajari materi matematika lanjutan seperti aljabar. Penelitian ini bertujuan mengembangkan media pembelajaran refutation text untuk mengatasi miskonsepsi siswa dalam penjumlahan dan pengurangan bilangan bulat. Refutation text yang dikembangkan berbentuk Lembar Kerja Siswa (LKS) dengan merujuk pada model pengembangan Borg dan Gall (1983). Uji coba refutation text dilakukan pada 15 orang siswa SMP kelas VII. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa (1) hasil penilaian ahli menunjukkan refutation text layak digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran bagi guru dalam mengajarkan penjumlahan dan pengurangan bilangan bulat; (2) refutation text yang diterapkan di kelas uji coba efektif dalam mengatasi miskonsepsi siswa dalam penjumlahan dan pengurangan bilangan bulat; dan (3) hasil penilaian praktisi dan respon siswa menunjukkan bahwa refutation text praktis digunakan sebagai media pembelajaran untuk mengatasi miskonsepsi siswa. In the present article, we provide the result of validity and inter-rater reliability test of the project assessment instrument. The instrument with a rubric was used to assess students’ project task in grade eight for function and relation topic. The task was adopted from mathematics textbooks used in the schools. The instrument has been tested to 10 raters/teachers and 94 grade eight students from three schools (in Surabaya and Gresik). Data were collected through the project assessment sheet along with its rubric as the scoring guidance for the teachers. Construct validity was analyzed through confirmatory factor analysis, while a reliability test was conducted by using inter-rater reliability method with the Intraclass Correlation Coefficient. The result of the validity test showed that the instrument did not fulfill the criteria of construct validity. It is indicated by the different number of factors between the initial construction and the empirical test result. In term of inter-rater reliability, the instrument is highly reliable. The findings indicate the need for testing the non-test assessment instrument provided on mathematics textbooks, so the aspects of its assessment sheet fulfill the valid and reliable criteria. \u0000Keywords: Validity, Reliability, Inter-rater, Project assessment, Project task \u0000[Bahasa]: Subjektivitas dan kurang konsistennya guru/rater dalam proses penyekoran merupakan kritik yang umum ditujukan pada penilaian proyek dalam pembelajaran matematika. Oleh karena itu, artikel ini menyajikan hasil uji validitas konstruk dan reliabilitas inter-rater instrumen penilaian projek. Instrumen yang dilengkapi rubrik tersebut digunakan untuk menilai tugas proyek siswa kelas VIII SMP pada materi relasi dan fungsi. Tugas diambil dari buku matematika yang digunakan di sekolah. Instrumen diujicobakan pada 10 raters/guru dan 94 siswa di tiga sekolah berbeda di Kota Surabaya dan Kabupaten Gresik. Data dikumpulkan melalui lembar penilaian projek yang dilengkapi rubrik penilaian sebagai pedoman guru dalam melakukan penskoran. Validitas konstruk dianalisis dengan menggunakan Confirmatory Factor Analysis, sedangkan reliabilitas inter-rater dianalisis dengan Intraclass Correlation Coefficient. Hasil uji validitas menunjukkan bahwa instrumen penilaian yang digunakan tidak valid secara konstruk. The data were collected through subjects' works on the proof, recorded think-aloud data, and in-depth interviews. Data analysis was guided by Toulmin’s argumentation scheme. The results show that the PMTs used three types of backing, i.e., backing in the form of definitions or theorems (reference backing), examples of numbers (numerical backing) and graphs of functions (graphical backing). The PMTs utilized the backings to strengthen deductive and inductive warrant. A numerical backing is used when a warrant cannot justify the truth of a claim. Graphical backing is used to convince oneself about the truth of the data that has been made while the reference backing is only clarification when students have understood or have knowledge of the statement given. Numerical and graphical backing relate directly to rebuttal and provide counter-examples and qualifier of the claim. Data for the review was the research articles authored by Indonesian mathematics education researchers and published in the online peer-review journals. The articles were searched in national scientific databases, DOAJ, and Google Scholar. The searches resulted in forty articles which aim to develop students' character and values through mathematics lesson. Five steps, i.e., text interpretation, coding, analysis, discussion, and reconsideration, are employed to analyze the articles qualitatively. The review reveals the articles lack of theoretical basis in the conceptualization of character/values, the development of character/values, and their measurement. Twenty-six articles on character did not define the notion clearly; meanwhile, the other articles only cite some definitions, but no operational definition was made. Character is a multifaceted construct which requires an operational definition to measure its development. In developing character and values, various strategies were utilized, but the most authors have not addressed theoretical analysis and rationale on their feasibility and relations the conceptualization of the notions. All articles did not provide any explanation on whether the instruments used were developed with respect to the nature of character or values development and fulfill psychometric properties. In this case, we argue that the researches were unfocused and not extensive. In this article, related theories and prior works are thoroughly discussed to shed light on the researching topics. Further research which relates to character education program in Indonesia is also elaborated. Data untuk ulasan merupakan artikel hasil penelitian yang ditulis oleh peneliti pendidikan matematika Indonesia dan diterbitkan di jurnal daring yang sudah melalui ulasan sejawat. Artikel dicari melalui basis data ilmiah nasional, DOAJ, dan Google Scholar. Pencarian menghasilkan 40 artikel yang bertujuan membangun karakter dan nilai siswa dalam pembelajaran matematika. Artikel dianalisis secara kualitatif melalui lima langkah yaitu interpretasi teks, penyusunan kode, analisis, diskusi, dan pertimbangan kembali. Ulasan menunjukkan bahwa artikel tersebut memiliki kekurangan dasar teoritis dalam konseptualisasi karakter/nilai, pengembangan karakter/nilai, dan aspek pengukuran. This study used explorative research with a qualitative approach. The instruments in this study were mathematical ability test, contextual problems, and interview guidelines. A prospective mathematics teacher who has high mathematics ability involved in this study. The subject was selected from 56 prospective mathematics teachers through a test. After the subject solved contextual problems, an interview was conducted. The result revealed that prospective mathematics teacher did mathematization when solving the contextual problem by simplifying, solving in a structural way, and fitting to the context of the problem. We conducted quasi-experiment research which involves 132 lower secondary school students (age 14-15 years old) as the population. Of the population, 25 students respectively in two classes were selected randomly as experiment class and control class. The experiment class was taught using MMP-PS, and a control class was taught using MMP (Missouri mathematics project learning). Data were analyzed using one sample t-test to examine the effectiveness of MMP-PS and MMP toward mathematics reasoning ability and self-efficacy. The difference of students’ mathematical reasoning and self-efficacy before and after the treatment was analyzed using Manova. The comparison of the effectiveness of MMP-PS and MMP were analyzed through a t-Benferroni test.   This article shows that MMP-PS is effective on mathematical reasoning ability and self-efficacy. Meanwhile, MMP is effective on mathematical reasoning ability. The MMP-PS was better than MMP on students’ self-efficacy. Thus, MMP-PS could be utilized in mathematics learning to support students’ mathematical reasoning ability and self-efficacy. \u0000Keywords: Missouri mathematics project, Problem solving, Mathematical reasoning, self-efficacy \u0000[Bahasa]: Artikel ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan keefektifan pembelajaran missouri mathematics project dengan pendekatan problem solving (MMP-PS) terhadap kemampuan penalaran matematika dan self-efficacy. Penelitian kuasi eksperimen dilaksanakan dengan melibatkan 132 siswa SMP (kisaran umur 14-15 tahun) sebagai populasi. Dipilih secara acak dua kelas yang terdiri dari masing-masing 25 siswa sebagai kelas eksperimen dan kelas kontrol. Kelas eksperimen diajar dengan menggunakan pembelajaran Missouri mathematics project dengan pendekatan problem solving dan kelas kontrol diajar dengan pembelajaran missouri mathematics project (MMP). Data penelitian dianalisis melalui uji satu sampel untuk mengukur keefektifan MMP-PS dan MMP terhadap kemampuan penalaran matematika dan self-efficacy. Perbedaan kemampuan penalaran matematika dan self-efficacy siswa sebelum dan sesudah pembelajaran dianalisis menggunakan uji Manova. Perbandingan keunggulan antara MMP-PS dan MMP menggunakan uji t-Benferroni. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa MMP-PS efektif ditinjau dari kemampuan penalaran matematika dan self-efficacy. Sementara itu, pembelajaran MMP efektif ditinjau kemampuan penalaran matematika. Pembelajaran MMP-PS lebih unggul dari pembelajaran MMP ditinjau dari self-efficacy siswa. Two upper secondary mathematics teachers were involved in this research. They were novice teachers in the use of digital technology in mathematics teachings. Classroom video recording and transcripts were the primary sources of data, meanwhile interview with the teachers and field notes are the supporting data. The teachings videos were categorized into some episodes, transcribed and analyzed following the phases of analyzing classroom video recordings and transcript by Cobb and Whitenack (1996). To capture the whole picture of the teachers’ practices, data analysis was referred to instrumental orchestration (Drijvers et al., 2010) and didactics tetrahedron unfolded (Hollebrands & Okumuş, 2018). In this research, we found that the observed teachers’ orchestrations are mostly non-technology orchestrations. The teachers have a different focus; one focuses only on mathematics and another focus on mathematics through the use of technology. The research concludes that old-fashioned classroom practices can be the pitfall for using digital technology in the mathematics classroom.  \u0000Keywords: GeoGebra, Mathematics task, Digital technology, Pitfall, Teachers’ practices \u0000[Bahasa]: Penelitian ini bertujuan menganalisis bagaimana guru pemula menggunakan teknologi digital dalam kelas dan perubahan praktik pembelajaran setelah menggunakan teknologi. Dua guru matematika SMA menjadi subjek dalam penelitian. Subjek merupakan guru pemula terkait penggunaan teknologi digital dalam pembelajaran matematika. Data utama penelitian diperoleh melalui rekaman video pembelajaran. Hasil wawancara dengan guru dan catatan lapangan digunakan sebagai data pendukung. Video pembelajaran dikelompokkan menjadi beberapa episode, dibuat transkrip dan dianalisis berdasarkan langkah-langkah analisis rekaman video dan transkrip pembelajaran oleh Cobb and Whitenack (1996). Untuk memperoleh gambaran menyeluruh praktik guru, analisis data merujuk pada kerangka orkestra instrumental (Drijvers et al, 2010) dan segiempat didaktik terbuka (Hollebrands & Okumuş, 2018). Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa sebagian besar orkestra guru dalam pembelajaran masih bercirikan pembelajaran tanpa teknologi. Dua guru dalam penelitian ini memiliki fokus yang berbeda dalam pembelajaran yaitu fokus hanya pada matematika dan fokus pada matematika melalui penggunaan teknologi. The subjects were mathematics students who enrolled in Analytic Geometry course and selected by purposive sampling technique. The instrument of this research was the researcher as the main instrument and a problem-solving test as the supporting instrument. Data were collected using a think-aloud method and analyzed through three steps: reducing data, presenting data, and drawing conclusions. The results of this study show that at the stage of understanding the problem, FI and FD male students read questions silently and did not write what is known and asked in the problem. At the planning stage, FD male student drew elements that are fully known, while male FI students did not do so. At the stage of implementing the plan, FI male student was aware of less effective strategy, while FD male students did not. In re-checking phase, FI male student used a variety of strategies and checked whether or not the results meet the criteria of solving the problem, while FD male students used a variety of strategies but are assisted with a prompt. This study shows that FI and FD male students have similar metacognition profile at the stage of understanding the problem, but they are different in planning, doing the plan and re-checking the result of problem-solving. \u0000Keywords : Metacognition, Gender, Analytic geometry, Cognitive style, Problem-solving \u0000[Bahasa]: Peneltian studi kasus ini bertujuan untuk mendiskripsikan metakognisi mahasiswa laki-laki dalam memecahkan masalah geometri analitik ditinjau dari gaya kognitif. Subjek penelitianadalah mahasiswa matematika yang mengambil mata kuliah Geometri Analitik dipilih dengan teknik purposive sampling. Instrumen penelitian meliputi instrumen utama (peneliti) dan instrumen bantu (soal pemecahan masalah geometri analitik). Data dikumpulkan dengan menggunakan metode think aloud. Analisis data dilakukan dengan cara reduksi data, penyajian data, dan penarikan kesimpulan. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan pada tahap memahami masalah, mahasiswa laki-laki FI dan FD membaca soal dalam hati serta tidak menuliskan yang diketahui dan ditanyakan. Pada tahap menyusun rencana, mahasiswa laki-laki FD menggambar unsur-unsur yang diketahui secara lengkap, sedangkan mahasiswa laki-laki FI tidak melakukannya. Pada tahap melaksanakan rencana, mahasiswa laki-laki FI menyadari terdapat strategi yang kurang efektif, sedangkan mahasiswa laki-laki FD tidak melakukannya. Using this model, geometry test can be classified in the level of creative thinking based on the information processing process of the mathematical knowledge they already have to solve problems according to the criteria at each hierarchical level. The development of the test instrument refers to Beyers (2011). A quantitative method was used to validate instruments through experts validation and instrument validation. The results showed that there was five geometry test that can be used to describe the student's creative thinking process at a different hierarchical level based on the information processing taxonomy. The results of this study can be a reference for teachers and other researchers to design mathematical test by paying attention to the hierarchical level of student's thinking abilities so that students with different abilities can solve problems which refer to their abilities. \u0000Keywords: Creative thinking,Geometry, Information processing taxonomy, Test design \u0000[Bahasa]: Artikel ini memaparkan tentang bagaimana menghasilkan instrumen yang valid dan reliabel untuk kemampuan berpikir kreatif geometris berdasarkan model taksonomi pemrosesan informasi. Dengan menggunakan model ini, soal geometri dapat diklasifikasikan dalam tingkatan berpikir kreatif siswa berdasarkan proses pengolahan informasi dari pengetahuan matematika yang telah mereka miliki untuk menyelesaikan masalah sesuai batas kriteria pada setiap tingkatannya. Pengembangan instrumen tes mengikuti langkah Beyers (2011). Metode kuantitatif digunakan untuk memvalidasi instrumen soal yang melalui tahap validasi ahli dan validasi instrumen. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa terdapat lima butir soal geometri yang dapat digunakan untuk mendeskripsikan proses berpikir kreatif siswa pada tingkatan hierarki yang berbeda berdasarkan model taksonomi pemrosesan informasi.
