Arshad","doi":"10.32890/jps2022.25.1","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.32890/jps2022.25.1","url":null,"abstract":"The inclusivity of students with disabilities into the mainstream education is getting more attention when all institutions of higherlearning, public and private, are expected to implement the disability inclusion policy. Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) has beensupporting the potential of students with disabilities by offering academic programmes. This study examines the policy regardinginclusivity for people/students with disabilities and services provided. Using a qualitative approach, the primary data were obtained through the interviews with the officer of Student Affairs Department (HEP) and three disabled students. Responses were recorded, transcribed and analysed using thematic approach. HEP was selected since the Department involves with students affairs and provides services for students with disabilities. A focus group discussion was held with the three students, taking different programmes, and having different type of impairments. The study found that: (a) UUM has adopted the PWD Guideline by the Ministry of Education; (b) UUM supports the inclusivity education when students with disabilities are offered to enrol into the academic programmes; and (c) services offered for students with disabilities are limited. It is recommended for the institution to have a written disability policy that suitable with the surrounding and environment of the campus and education. At the same time, its true implementation is essential along with the application of the social model in materialising the inclusivity concept. The housing prices are still pricey and the prices are progressively rising every year, as the economy develops. However, household income has not increased in lockstep, which is the primary cause of Malaysians’ inability to purchase a home. Furthermore, during the COVID-19 pandemic, this scenario intensifies as economic containment tactics have a negative impact on the economy and social aspects. This study adopted a quantitative research method where the primary data were collected through online survey. The survey was conducted through internet platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp to collect more responses as online survey brings convenience to respondents. 155 feedbacks were collected from the respondents. From the results, the personal income has the highest impact on the affordability of respondents to purchase their first property in Malaysia where the respondents think the government should promote more incentives and initiatives in helping youngsters to purchase their first home. The government should emphasize the housing sector development as this sector is linked with social development significantly in term of citizens’ satisfaction level with the government policies. The outcomes can be referred to by first home buyers when they encounter similar situations as guidance to help them understand the problems. Although, the government has implemented several housing measures, including allocating available homes to qualifying homebuyers but it is insufficient. Cases of adolescent self-harming behaviour do exist, and the number is increasing every year along with the report of mental health problems among children and adolescents issued by the Malaysian Ministry of Health through the National Health and Morbidity Survey Statistics report. This phenomenon needs to be given due attention by all parties, especially guidance and counselling teachers in schools so that the National Education Philosophy can be achieved and produce students who have good mental health and a healthy mindset. Kaedah kajian ini adalah secara temubual. Kajian ini melibatkan responden dalam kalangan kakitangan pentadbiran dan staf sokongan di sektor awam. Many studies have found that young working mothers have difficulty balancing between work and family (Delina & Raya, 2013; Pradhan, 2016; Boushey, 2016). There are various factors that drive the phenomenon. Other factors that also contribute to this problem are the inadequate provision in terms of appropriate facilities, services, and infrastructure to support the needs of women in achieving work-life balance. A better support system will provide many options for women to choose to remain in the employment sector despite having to take care of children and manage their family life. Oleh itu, satu kajian telah dilakukan dalam kalangan pelajar Politeknik Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah. Objektif kajian adalah untuk mengenalpasti kesediaan pelajar mengikuti sesi pengajaran dan pembelajaran secara atas talian semasa PKP, mengkaji tahap persepsi dan motivasi pelajar serta mengkaji pencapaian akademik pelajar yang mengikuti sesi pengajaran dan pembelajaran secara atas talian semasa PKP. Seramai 423 orang responden telah menjawab soal selidik secara atas talian. Data telah dianalisis menggunakan perisian Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) versi 28. Hasil kajian mendapati majoriti responden melaporkan bahawa mereka mempunyai kesediaan untuk mengikuti sesi pengajaran dan pembelajaran secara atas talian. Responden juga mempunyai persepsi yang positif terhadap sesi pengajaran dan pembelajaran secar atas talian. Majoriti responden melaporkan bahawa mereka bermotivasi tinggi untuk mengikuti kelas secara atas talian. Kebanyakan responden mencapai prestasi akademikyang diukur melalui PMK adalah memuaskan. Dapatan kajian ini diharapkan dapat membantu pihak yang terlibat terutamanya pendidik dan institusi pengajian dalam merangka modul dan polisi pengajaran dan pembelajaran secara atas talian.\u0000 \u0000ABSTRACTMalaysia prompted to execute the Movement Controlled Order (MCO) once the World Health Organization declared the COVID-19as a pandemic in Mac 2020. As a result, traditional learning method of face-to-face classes ceased to operate in all primary, secondaryand tertiary learning institutions. Therefore, a study was conducted among students of the Politeknik Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah in Jitra, Kedah. The objectives of the study are to identify the students’ readiness for the online teaching and learning session during MCO, to study the students’ levels of perception and motivation, and to study the students’ academic performances who are involved with the online teaching and learning during MCO. A total of 423 respondents had answered an online survey. Data were analysed using the Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 28. The result of the study found that the majority of respondents reported that they were ready to participate in online teaching and learning sessions. Respondents also have a positive perception of online teaching and learning sessions. The majority of respondents reported that they were highly motivated to take online classes. Most respondents achieved satisfactory academic performance measured through CGPA. Further to that, there are also Malaysia citizens who do not believein the effectiveness of the vaccine which lead to refusal in receiving it voluntarily. The study aimed to (i) to explore the understandingof the Malay senior citizens on health communication campaigns related to the COVID-19 vaccination programmes, (ii) to reviewthe sources of information used by the senior citizens in obtaining information related to the vaccine and COVID-19, and (iii) to explorethe behaviours of the senior citizens and their acceptance of the COVID-19 vaccine. The study involved 10 Malay senior citizenswithin the range age group of 55-65 years. In order to seek diverse insights on the information seeking behaviour and the preferredsources, the study focused on the influence of cultural, religious diversity and the implementation of health communication campaigns by the government on the effectiveness of the COVID-19 vaccine. Further, the study also explored the level of understanding and perception on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccine among senior citizens. Qualitative methodology was applied using focus group discussion in the data collection, and NVIVO software was used for analysis. The study found hesitancy on the vaccine resulting from the unsure sources of information. Senior citizens from Malay community were very concerned on receiving the vaccine. Additionally, the result indicated that the national immunisation campaign is less effective especially to those who reside in rural areas. The majority of the participants obtained information sources related to vaccines and COVID-19 through social media compared to mainstream media. Kajian ini merangkumi persepsi masyarakat dan tahap pengetahuan dari sudut pandangan pakar, faktor-faktor PMDD dan simptom-simptom yang dipercayai adalah simptom PMDD. Kajian lepas mengandungi kajian-kajian baru diterbitkan memfokuskan kepada sindrom prahaid (PMS) dan PMDD. Reka bentuk kajian ini berbentuk kualitatif dengan memberikan penekanan kepada kaedah temu bual. Seramai empat orang pakar dipilih sebagai responden kajian iaitu dua orang pakar psikiatri dan dua orang pakar sakit puan. Kaedah pengumpulan data dalam kajian ini adalah melalui temu bual bersemuka dan melalui telefon dengan menggunakan soalan semi-struktur dan terarah. Data yang diperolehi telah diproses melalui analisis data tematik. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa masyarakat masih lagi tidak mengetahui apa itu PMDD dan terdapat kepelbagaian faktor membawa kewujudan seperti ketidakstabilan hormon wanita, genetik, persekitaran dan gaya hidup. Dapatan kajian juga menunjukkan bahawa simptom-simptom PMDD seringkali melibatkan simptom fizikal dan simptom psikologikal. Pembentukan identiti kendiri yang proaktif sangat penting dan perlu diberi perhatian sepenuhnya oleh pihak universiti bagi merealisasikan hasrat untuk melahirkan graduan yang berkualiti dan dapat memenuhi permintaan dalam pasaran global. Kajian ini bertujuan membuat perbandingan pembentukan identiti kendiri dalam kalangan pelajar tahun pertama dan tahun empat di universiti dengan bersandarkan kepada Teori Pembangunan Diri Chikerings (1969). Pengumpulan data menggunakan kaedah temu bual separa berstruktur. Seramai sembilan orang pelajar Universiti Utara Malaysia yang terdiri daripada lima orang pelajar tahun pertama dan empat orang pelajar tahun akhir telah ditemu bual. Data diproses menggunakan perisian NVivo 10.0. Dapatan kajian menunjukkan bahawa Teori Pembangunan Diri Chikering adalah sesuai untuk digunakan bagi mengenal pasti pembentukan identiti kendiri pelajar tahun pertama dan tahun akhir. Oleh itu, teori ini boleh dijadikan sebagai panduan kepada institusi pengajian tinggi yang terlibat dalam merangka aktiviti kurikulum dan kokurikulum pelajar dengan mengambil kira elemen pembangunan identiti diri pelajar. Hasil kajian juga mendapati bahawa Teori Pembangunan Diri Chikering sesuai diaplikasikan untuk melihat pembentukan identiti kendiri pelajar. Dalam pengkelasan pembentukan identiti kendiri pelajar berdasarkan Teori Pembangunan Diri Chikering, tujuh vektor tersebut boleh dibahagikan kepada dua tahap yang utama, iaitu tahap pertama pembentukan identiti kendiri pelajar terdiri daripada vektor 1 hingga vektor 4, manakala tahap kedua pembentukan identiti kendiri pelajar bermula dari vektor 5 sehingga vektor 7. Kajian ini diharap dapat membantu universiti untuk menjalankan aktiviti pembangunan pelajar dengan memfokuskan kepada pembentukan identiti kendiri pelajar berdasarkan kepada dua tahap pembentukan identiti kendiri yang telah dikenal pasti. Shabdin","doi":"10.32890/jps.24.2021.12420","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.32890/jps.24.2021.12420","url":null,"abstract":"Refusing to participate in an action is a negative response that might lead to a dispute and jeopardise the connection between the hearer and the speaker. To avoid the conflict that may arise when a speaker must decline a request, the speaker must offer an acceptable refusal and adjust to the position of the interlocutor as well as the circumstances of the situation. This study examined the strategies and sequence order of the strategies employed by Malay speakers of English as a second language (MSE) when they refused requests made by higher and equal status interlocutors. Twelve MSE undergraduates from a local university participated in the study. Data were collected using an open role-play which were transcribed, classified into semantic refusal strategies (Beebe et al., 1990) and categorized into the types of sequence orders of the strategies. The findings revealed that the MSE preferred indirect strategies when refusing higher and equal status interlocutors’ requests. When using direct strategies, they opted for lesser and the least degree of directness. The sequence orders of the strategies employed to refuse both interlocutors were also similar; immediate refusal and delayed refusal. However, they deferred in terms of their preference between the two types of sequence orders and the specific strategies used in the pre-refusal, head act and post-refusal. These variations show their effort to adapt to the status of their interlocutors; higher and equal status and the given situations. Their use of strategies at the post-refusal for both interlocutors were varied and lengthier compared to the sequence orders revealed in the previous studies. The findings reflect the participants’ effort to search for equilibrium between upholding their stance and at the same time remain respectful in the case of their employer and being concerned toward their friend. Children inside institutions either in foster or residential care are prevalence to the experience of neglect and parental loss bereavement. Bereavement endures a variety of factors that influence negatively on child mental health. The purpose of this concept paper is to explain noteworthy contributions with regards to information on bereavement among children and their psychosocial problems in institutions and residential cares. The attachment theory is significant to explain the association of bereavement and institutions, which supported the evidence that bereavement among vulnerable population inside institution, are at high risk of social deterioration. The theory implies a cause-effect relationship between early attachments. Children are potentially psychologically affected by any traumatic events, which caused them to experience prolong mental developmental delay that are associated with different psychological disorders. Institutionalized children can easily become victim of their psychosocial inability to defend themselves from ruthless violence. Research had examined the differentiating factors of certain symptoms in normal grief and bereavement within the context of depressive disorders, including self-guiltiness, death thoughts, maltreatment, and worthlessness. Experiences of bereavement may occur over the loss, which then shifted to transient withdrawal. Parental loss is one of the most extreme social deprivations that a child can experience Therefore responses to parental loss may be age-specific, related to temperament and to culture. The literature indicated that bereavement in institutional settings has the potential to cause significant risks of mental health with the most prevalent impact related to psychological issues. To cope with the consequences of child maltreatment, prolonged effective interventions should be encouraged.
