O nivel de atividade fisica das criancas tem diminuido no Brasil, fato que pode contribuir para o aumento do risco de doencas associadas com o sedentarismo e a obesidade. METODO: Este e um ensaio educacional randomizado controlado que avaliou o impacto de uma intervencao educacional para professores no nivel de atividade fisica e no gasto energetico das criancas, e no comportamento do professor durante as aulas de educacao fisica em escolas publicas de Sao Paulo. A populacao estudada compreendeu criancas de 1ᵃ e 2ᵃ series de oito escolas (tres expostas e cinco nao-expostas ao treinamento de professores em nutricao e atividade fisica). Os resultados foram medidos por observacao direta e gravados por uma câmera VHS durante as aulas de educacao fisica. Dados de 78 aulas de educacao fisica foram analisados segundo o System for Observing Fitness Instruction Time - SOFIT. RESULTADOS: Apos intervencao, os resultados mostraram aumentos significantes no nivel de atividade fisica das criancas (caminhada, p < 0.001; atividades vigorosas (p < 0.001), e diminuicao na categoria na qual a crianca permanecia em pe (p < 0.001)). No entanto, os resultados mostraram um aumento nao-significante na media do gasto energetico pelas criancas (70.6% = 27.6Kcal), porem a interacao do grupo e do tempo (intervencao) foi altamente significante (32.4Kcal; 95% CI 24.7; 40.1, p < 0.0001) indicando a efetividade da intervencao em aumentar o gasto energetico das criancas durante a aulade educacao fisica. Os resultados mostraram tambem um aumento na duracao da aula de educacao fisica (26.2 para 32.1 minutos (p = 0.01). CONCLUSAO: Houve diferenca no comportamento dos professores com um impacto positivo no nivel de atividade fisica e no gasto energetico das criancas apos a intervencao educacional.","PeriodicalId":31471,"journal":{"name":"Medical Express","volume":"3 1","pages":"1-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71188978","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to assess depressive, anxious, nicotine withdrawal symptoms, and craving in a sample of smokers attending a smoking cessation program over a period of 12 weeks. METHODS: A naturalistic study was conducted in which 78 smokers were consecutively recruited for a 12 week evaluation program. Socio-demographic data and clinical information were collected, rating scales were used to assess anxious and depressive symptoms, nicotine dependence, withdrawal symptoms, and craving. RESULTS: Of the 78 recruited smokers, 17 remained abstinent and 61 reverted to smoking during the period of 12 weeks. The probability of maintaining abstinence was increased when low depressive symptoms or low craving occurred during the cessation program. CONCLUSION: The present results strengthen the importance of assessing depressive symptoms and craving over the follow-up of a physician-assisted smoking cessation program to detect abstaining smokers at risk to relapse.","PeriodicalId":31471,"journal":{"name":"Medical Express","volume":"38 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71188966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

OBJECTIVE: To determine the relative amounts of the non-fascicular components in the following areas: (i) proximal to the inguinal ligament [LFCN-1], (ii) deep to the inguinal ligament [LFCN-2], or (iii) distal to LFCN-2 [LFCN-3]. These amounts were discriminated as adipose [FAT] and non-adipose (connective) [NON-FAT] tissues. METHOD: Samples of LFCN-1, LFCN-2 and LFCN-3 from 21 human cadaveric samples were used. Paraffin sections of these structures were processed by Masson's trichrome stain for connective tissue. The number of fascicles was counted in each of these structures; FAT and NON-FAT areas were determined in the non-fascicular areas of the structures. RESULTS: There were more fascicles in LFCN-3 vs. LFCN-1 or LFCN-2; there was more NON-FAT vs. FAT in LFCN-2 vs. LFCN-1 and LFCN-3; inversely, there was more FAT vs. NON-FAT in LFCN-3 vs. LFCN-1 and LFCN-2. All of these comparisons were statistically significant. CONCLUSION: The presence of a higher content of NON-FAT in LFCN-2 and FAT in LFCN-3 may help to explain meralgia paresthetica resulting from compression or focal entrapment of the Lateral Femoral Cutaneous Nerve as it passes deep relative to the inguinal ligament.","PeriodicalId":31471,"journal":{"name":"Medical Express","volume":"3 1","pages":"1-7"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-02-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71189043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As alteracoes comportamentais e psicologicos relacionadas com seu uso abusivo e excessivo estao criando serios impactos sobre a vida dos usuarios. METODO: Uma revisao sistematica foi feita atraves das bases de dados Medline, Lilacs, SciELO e Cochrane usando os termos: \"Facebook Addiction,\" \"Social Network Sites,\" \"Facebook Abuse.\". A pesquisa abrangeu os ultimos 5 anos ate janeiro de 2015. Os artigos que examinam a dependencia do Facebook na populacao em geral foram incluidos; analisamos como esse conceito evoluiu ao longo dos ultimos cinco anos, e espera-se contribuir para o melhor entendimento da questao e seus impactos. RESULTADOS: Apesar de controversos, relatorios publicados correlacionam a dependencia de Facebook a mecanismos de recompensa e gratificacao. Alguns usuarios desenvolveram um relacionamento abusivo estimulados pela falsa sensacao de satisfacao ou como uma maneira de se sentir melhor ou mais auto-confiante (aumento do nivel de excitacao ou fuga). Estudos de varios paises indicam prevalencia diferente, provavelmente devido a falta de consenso e ao uso de diferentes denominacoes, dando origem a adopcao de criterios de diagnostico diferentes. CONCLUSAO: As redes sociais sao ferramentas de comunicacao modernas; existem inumeros beneficios, mas tambem deve ser monitorado os danos subsequentes causados por seu uso abusivo. Muitos usuarios com o uso abusivo ou dependente declaram perdas significativas em suas vidas pessoais, profissionais, academicos, sociais e familiares. Little is known about the mechanisms, causes, clinical course, and consequences of this condition. Over 30 studies have been published on the matter but only a small proportion has found differences in the working memory of individuals with vs. without insomnia. OBJECTIVE: To summarize evidence regarding the differences in working memory performance between insomniac vs. normal adult sleepers. METHODS: The survey was conducted using an advanced search in the ISI Web of Science and MEDLINE/PubMed with the terms \"sleep\", \"insomnia\" and \"working memory\" as major descriptors; these were crossed with the following keywords: \"psychological tests\", \"neuropsychology\" and \"performance\". RESULTS: A total of 112 articles were identified in the search conducted in PubMed and Web of Science. After the screening, 102 articles unrelated to the proposed theme were excluded. Thus, 10 articles were analyzed by the eligibility and exclusion criteria, and included in this systematic review. CONCLUSION: The information resulting from the analysis of the reviewed articles suggests that mild, but not definitive deficits in cognitive performance might be masked by insignificant disparities in studies comparing insomniac individuals with normal sleepers. This shortcoming can be circumvented by larger and better-characterized samples, together with optimized methodological control of factors which might otherwise result in confounding variations among participants.","PeriodicalId":31471,"journal":{"name":"Medical Express","volume":"3 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71189652","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our capacity for motor learning allows us to flexibly adapt movements to an ever-changing environment. The term Virtual Reality refers to a wide variety of methods used to simulate an alternative or virtual world. OBJECTIVE: To analyze the results shown in previous studies on motor learning with Virtual Reality use in elderly participants. METHOD: To select the articles, three steps were followed. A systematic literature review was performed without time limitation. The research was carried out using PubMed, BVS and Web of science; considering the keywords, we included articles that showed the following three terms: elderly, virtual reality and motor learning. RESULTS: The initial search yielded 49 articles. After duplicates were removed, two of the authors independently evaluated the title and abstract of each article against the study inclusion criteria. From these, 45 articles were excluded based on title and abstract. Finally, four articles met the inclusion criteria. CONCLUSION: Although few studies were conducted on motor learning in elderly people through virtual reality and, even fewer were of good quality, it was shown that elderly people, with or without a specific disease, can benefit from interventions based on virtual reality to improve motor learning skills.","PeriodicalId":31471,"journal":{"name":"Medical Express","volume":"3 1","pages":"1-8"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5935/MEDICALEXPRESS.2016.02.01","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71189643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We investigate the association between the p-value of normality test applied in RR intervals and symbolic analysis of HRV. METHOD: We evaluated 32 healthy women between 18 and 30 years old. RR intervals were used for HRV analysis and we performed symbolic analysis, where RR intervals are joined by symbols. Sets of three consecutive symbols (RR intervals) were grouped into four types of clusters, as follows: 1. Three equal symbols (zero variation); 2: two equal, one divergent symbol (one variation); 3. Three different symbols monotonically ascending or descending (two like variations); 4. Three different symbols, forming a peak or a trough (two unlike variations). Frequency of occurrence of each type of cluster was calculated. Normality tests were applied to all RR intervals and the p-value was calculated. We computed the correlations between the p-value of normality test and symbolic analysis of HRV. RESULTS: Correlation coefficients between the p-value of normality test from Kolmorogov-Smirnov test and the four types of clusters showed no correlation for any of them. Likewise, the correlation coefficient index between the p-value of normality test calculated from the Shapiro-Wilk test and symbolic analysis produced no significant results for any of the four types of clusters. CONCLUSION: There was no significant correlation between the p-value of normality test and HRV symbolic analysis. The physiological significance of this result is that the PNT is not related to chaotic behavior of HRV.","PeriodicalId":31471,"journal":{"name":"Medical Express","volume":"3 1","pages":"1-5"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71189705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
