The main aim of this paper is to characterise the rock art landscape of each region taking into account the motif types, rock art techniques, types of bedrock and types of topography used in each case; assessing both the differential conservation of engraved and painted images derived from different bedrock types and different shelter features offered by the topographic morphology, as well as their underlying production patterns. These research results are compared to those published by other authors in neighbouring regions, showing similarities and differences at large spatial scales, with the aim of suggesting the existence of systemas of visual communication and of hunter-gatherer mobility at an inter-regional scale.","PeriodicalId":31419,"journal":{"name":"Espacio Tiempo y Forma Serie I Prehistoria y Arqueologia","volume":"4 1","pages":"17-53"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5944/ETFI.6.2013.11384","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71265884","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Seventeen stations of 37 in that area were randomly selected to apply the evaluation and diagnosis methodology of environmental impacts that is applied by ICAN. The applied method allows classifying the natural and anthropic actions for the best search of solutions to eliminate the damage, or the practice of palliative actions to stop, in some way, its deterioration. So, the actions and impacts that affect in a deeper way the state of conservation of this Cuban important heritage are defined, enumerated and characterized in this paper.","PeriodicalId":31419,"journal":{"name":"Espacio Tiempo y Forma Serie I Prehistoria y Arqueologia","volume":"6 1","pages":"149-173"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5944/ETFI.6.2013.11383","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71265790","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper presents one of the rock shelters catalogued in Cerro Guasu, and links the parietal engravings (petroglyphs) to the archaeological deposit of the rock shelter. This hill is Jasuka Venda, the sacred mountain of the Pai Tavyterâ, a Guarani people whose traditional territory extended over the North of Eastern Paraguay and bordering areas of Brazil. This shelter contains more than one thousand and three hundred engravings representing animal and human footprints, vulvae and abstract signs. The archaeological excavation performed resulted in an only occupation level, with lithic industry on planoconvex flakes (known as limaces or slug-shaped tools) and bifacial points. A hearth was discovered whose base was dated by TL in 5,212±323 BP, which refers to Middle Archaic / Holocene Period, to which we ascribe the engravings and, in general, all the ‘footprint style’ rock art inventoried in twelve sites in Paraguay. This absolute dating is the oldest one for this style or tradition in the continent, and it allows to think in Amambay as a core area in the elaboration and dissemination of the narrative and graphic topics of the footprint style rock art in south America, the only type of rock art present in the majority of the continent.","PeriodicalId":31419,"journal":{"name":"Espacio Tiempo y Forma Serie I Prehistoria y Arqueologia","volume":"6 1","pages":"55-85"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5944/ETFI.6.2013.11177","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71265092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Africa ha pasado de ser vista como un continente baldio a apreciarse como una fuente autonoma de cultura, y el Sahara como recipiente de un inmenso legado cultural y artistico del que los investigadores solo ahora estan empezando a comprender en todo su alcance. Este legado cultural y artistico es el objeto de numerosos estudios encaminados a entender los contextos especificos de produccion del arte. El estilo caracteristico de Tetes Rondes es el que mayores dificultades de interpretacion plantea a los investigadores. Por ello, ocupa una parte importante de este articulo. La carencia en muchos lugares de informacion contextual (restos materiales) que ayudaria a validar o refutar las hipotesis de los investigadores y lo importante y necesario que resulta para el estudio del arte no quedarse en la lectura «superficial» de las imagenes, son algunos de los aspectos que veremos. Este articulo sostiene que para superar algunos de estos problemas es esencial el uso de enfoques y planteamientos interpretativos abiertos, permitiendo asi que las premisas de las que parten los investigadores no esten encorsetadas desde sus inicios por una u otra corriente teorica. Adaptar las teorias interpretativas a los vestigios arqueologicos y no al reves resulta fundamental para mejorar nuestro conocimiento de los tiempos preteritos. In the last decades the study of Sahara rock art begun to have its own agenda within prehistoric research and to take off as an archaeological sub-discipline. Africa has gone from being seen as an empty continent to an autonomous source of culture, and the Sahara as a container of an immense cultural and artistic legacy whose scope researchers are only now starting to comprehend. This cultural and artistic legacy is the object of many studies aimed at understanding the specific contexts of art production. The characteristic style of Tetes Rondes is the one whose interpretation poses the most difficulties to researchers. For this reason it occupies an important part of this article. The lack of contextual information (material remains) that would help validate or refute hypotheses made by researchers and the importance of not settling for a ‘superficial’ reading of the images for the study of the art, are some of the aspects that will be examined. This article holds that to overcome some of these problems it is essential to use open-ended approaches that will allow initial premises not to be constrained from the offset by broader theoretical currents. Adapting the interpretative theories to the archaeological remains, and not the other way around, is fundamental to the improvement of our knowledge of the past.","PeriodicalId":31419,"journal":{"name":"Espacio Tiempo y Forma Serie I Prehistoria y Arqueologia","volume":"6 1","pages":"87-121"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-11-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5944/ETFI.6.2013.10770","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71265358","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Iniciaremos nuestro trabajo explicando los distintos tipos de puntas solutrenses que se han definido hasta el momento para posteriormente mostrar la informacion obtenida desde los estudios funcionales de las puntas arqueologicos y la surgida desde las replicas experimentales. Ambas perspectivas complementarias seran el medio con el que hablar del grado de efectividad de las distintas puntas, los modos de enmangue, las fracturas que se producen como consecuencia de factores tanto funcionales y tecnologicos, asi como aquellos generados como resultado de alteraciones mecanicas diversas. En todo caso, pretendemos aportar en que punto estamos en esta tematica mas alla de la simple descripcion morfologica. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive overview of the research on a particular category of tools that covers an important role as geographical and chronological marker: the Upper Paleolithic Solutrean points. Through a techno-functional approach we discuss the different typologies of Solutrean points in terms of degree of effectiveness, hafting modes, types of fractures produced by technological and functional factors, as well the use-wears traces caused by mechanical alterations. Our observations are based both on archaeological and experimental data. The objective of this article is to revise the state of art on this topic, presenting new technological and functional data that allow us to overcome a purely morphological approach.","PeriodicalId":31419,"journal":{"name":"Espacio Tiempo y Forma Serie I Prehistoria y Arqueologia","volume":"1 1","pages":"491-506"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.5944/ETFI.5.2012.5641","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"71264657","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
