However, the mental workload associated with using this predictive information has not been ascertained. The study described, attempts to measure mental workload. In this simulator experiment, three types of predictive information (none, whether a parameter was changing abnormally, and the time for a parameter to reach an alert range) and four initial times to a parameter alert range (1 minute, 5 minutes, 15 minutes, and ETA+45 minutes) were tested to determine their effects on subjects' mental workload. Subjective workload ratings increased with increasing predictive information (whether a parameter was changing abnormally or the time for a parameter to reach an alert range). Subjective situation awareness decreased with more predictive information but it became greater with increasing initial times to a parameter alert range. Also, subjective focus changed depending on the type of predictive information. Lastly, skin temperature fluctuated less as the initial time to a parameter alert range increased.","PeriodicalId":312878,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fourth Annual Symposium on Human Interaction with Complex Systems","volume":"144 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114926090","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A performer is described as an observer interacting with a virtual environment to extract information in a time critical manner. In the presented research, a performer's multi modal capacity is supported by time scheduling techniques for parallel processing of sensors and displays to provide synchronous perceptual feedback. This modality is coupled to multidimensional numerical simulations. A software architecture facilitates a temporal framework for interactivity, complementary to static spatial organization of geometry for graphical display. Mutually applicable design criteria include the management of computing resources, a configuration of an observation space, and VR authoring. Accordingly the following system designs are introduced: 1) criteria for bounded synchronization among parallel processes; 2) an interface paradigm implemented with the criteria to facilitate spatio temporal articulation of multidimensional control signals extracted from continuous real time gestures of observers; 3) a run time configuration protocol implemented to support an efficient VR authoring capacity. Parallel processes are represented as nodes in a directed graph, with intelligent edges that determines how services between nodes are to be managed.","PeriodicalId":312878,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fourth Annual Symposium on Human Interaction with Complex Systems","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129875915","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We investigate the design rationale for developing debugging aids and analyze the role of debugging tools available today. By investigating the programmers' debugging process, we analyze the process of debugging and how debugging aids can help programmers. Debugging is performed mainly through the comprehension and isolation strategies along with abstractions. While debugging tools including tracing memory viewing, control flow graphs, and visualizations support the comprehension strategy, functions such as backtracking and breakpoints facilitate the isolation strategy. Debugging aids should help programmers enhance their understanding of the program and facilitate the process of gathering clues and searching for, and identifying the bug. Finally, we provide some suggestions on building more sophisticated debugging aids.","PeriodicalId":312878,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fourth Annual Symposium on Human Interaction with Complex Systems","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121226350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many complex systems that require human interaction are heavily dependent on advanced computing support. Many problems associated with computer use have come to be classified as \"human factor\" breakdowns. The area of computer anxiety and computer related fears/phobias, however, could also benefit from study and intervention. The study of human computer interaction has not typically addressed problems that emerge from the motivational or emotional/affective perspective. Reactions to being required to be computer literate, however, may be so extreme as to require clinical intervention. Paradoxically, potential treatments and support may be heavily reliant on emerging computing abilities.","PeriodicalId":312878,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fourth Annual Symposium on Human Interaction with Complex Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128713219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

How can the \"lessons learned\" in one area of human endeavour be systematically and successfully applied to another? What is the nature of the information that permits such transfer to occur? These are important questions currently being encountered in the realm of virtual environment (VE) systems design. Applications of VE technology originally developed for use in advanced tactical aviation settings are currently being used as models for the development of neurosurgical interface concepts. While at first glance the connection between air combat and surgery may seem a distant one at best, there are many important similarities between them. For instance, both task domains share at least ten common, important human performance attributes, each of which may provide key insights into how to import knowledge gained from one domain into the other. Each of these areas have important implications for designing successful technical systems to support human performance. This paper explores the notion that general principles of interface design, derived from a concern with optimizing the above aspects of task performance, can be derived from the study of apparently disparate task domains. To illustrate this general idea, we elaborate how cross-fertilization between neurosurgery and air combat can be used to successfully advance the design of interfaces to support both.","PeriodicalId":312878,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fourth Annual Symposium on Human Interaction with Complex Systems","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124931950","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A control theoretic framework is proposed to introduce a set of important conceptual distinctions that need to be respected in automation research and design. The framework is applied to a specific topic of recent research focus, modes in aviation automation. Although previous research in this area has advanced our understanding of key issues, the existing design guidelines lack the necessary specificity to contribute to major improvements in design practice. Our control theoretic perspective helps clarify these issues, and demonstrates why existing design guidelines are unlikely to fully support automation designers in their efforts to reduce the frequency of mode related errors. An alternative perspective, which we believe will yield more concrete design criteria and more appropriate tools, is suggested.","PeriodicalId":312878,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fourth Annual Symposium on Human Interaction with Complex Systems","volume":"143 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133334670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Participants used a computer mouse to trace the outline of a circle that was displayed on a computer monitor. The experimental apparatus introduced a series of rotational displacements to the participant's normal hand-eye coordination. These displacements were similar to the kinds of coordination displacements that are associated with performing endoscopic surgery. The goal of the investigation was to test whether the coordination system displayed behaviour similar to that associated with simple nonlinear dynamic systems, such as hysteresis and multistability. The observed hysteresis pattern parallels in quality the hysteresis behaviour of rather simple nonlinear dynamic systems. Hysteresis underscores the role of the contextual constraints in both the understanding and control of behaviour. It also motivates dynamic systems theory as a general framework for understanding coordination.","PeriodicalId":312878,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fourth Annual Symposium on Human Interaction with Complex Systems","volume":"484 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133722924","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
