Advances in computer technology must be integrated with a comprehensive understanding of the information seeking and synthesis behaviour in the context of information use. The focus of this research is on developing an understanding of user categories, background, their information seeking goals, electronic information systems they use, and strategies they bring into play during the information search process in a corporate environment. Our research methodology integrates field studies, cognitive modeling and analysis, computational model implementation, and design application. The article describes the field study and the results of the cognitive modeling phase of our ongoing research on human centered systems design.","PeriodicalId":312878,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fourth Annual Symposium on Human Interaction with Complex Systems","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121604310","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through analysis of system goals, operational contexts, and assessment of technologies, the design team develops concepts that support system design requirements. Like the design it supports, the design process is the result of investigation, intuition, tradeoff and decision. Historically however, it is difficult to appreciate the results of the design process outside the context in which the design process takes place. Without insight behind the rationale of a design, those who are left to operate, maintain, and support a system throughout its life cycle are forced to make blind assumptions regarding design intent (i.e., why did they design this way, why didn't they do it this way, I wonder what this is for?). As the complexity and integration of systems increase, design traceability is becoming increasingly more important to effective life cycle support. The paper discusses the role of traceability in design, techniques for establishing effective traceability and payoffs and consequences associated with effective and ineffective forms of traceability.","PeriodicalId":312878,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fourth Annual Symposium on Human Interaction with Complex Systems","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127448881","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This database consisted of measures of performance, demographic data, a summary of the experimental manipulations conducted in these studies, and data from two cognitive style tests. Eight linear regression analyses were conducted to determine which variables were the strongest predictors of performance. The results indicate that the strongest and most consistent predictor of performance was the interaction between a holist cognitive style score and an interface based on the principles of ecological interface design (EID). Thus, individuals who used an EID interface and who had high holist scores were the best performers. It seems that these individuals have the relational thinking ability that is required to exploit the value of the higher order functional information provided in an EID interface. This empirical result has important implications for future research on EID, and more importantly, for operator selection.","PeriodicalId":312878,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fourth Annual Symposium on Human Interaction with Complex Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130701405","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In spite of years of research with many papers written there is yet to appear a convergence toward a unified methodology in the multidisciplinary approaches. In particular we consider how the synthesis of complex systems, as is practised in the software engineering of large systems, sheds light on the analysis of complexity. It is suggested that a human-centered approach that factors complexity modulo a context, also known in the past in artificial intelligence as a perspective, may provide a platform for distinguishing which elements are part of the complex object being considered and which are germane to the motivation of the student of that object. The thesis presented is that the object must not be considered independently from its user and its context, and that in the duality of the consideration one may learn more about both the general characteristics of complexity and of the reasons for our interest in it. The proposal is to consider simultaneously user, interaction, and the related interfaces when studying the complexity of a system. This approach is more integrative and less reductionist than studying any of the aspects individually and brings forth the difficulties of a large range of diverse settings. An overview of the field is briefly presented in light of the proposed approach.","PeriodicalId":312878,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fourth Annual Symposium on Human Interaction with Complex Systems","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132824668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It use the sundial, the typewriter, the computer, the expert system, and the advanced information processing workstation (AIPW) as case studies to trace changes in the research and development process as it relates to human factors issues. The historical trends involve questions of trust-trust and mistrust of the computer technology on the part of the end user, on the one hand, and trust and mistrust of the research and development process on the part of system developers on the other.","PeriodicalId":312878,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fourth Annual Symposium on Human Interaction with Complex Systems","volume":"434 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122877497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These studies, based on naturalistic and adaptive approaches, have suggested that the poor performance typically demonstrated by traditional research is due not to failures on the part of the human, but failures of the empirical studies to test performance in representative situations. In particular, some researchers have studied how experience in an uncertain environment, or a task format that is more representative of naturally-occurring environments, can improve performance on evidential reasoning tasks. This paper describes research designed to test the effect of both differing task formats and environmental experience on performance on such tasks. Participants performed an evidential reasoning task in one of two formats, before and after receiving related experience in the task environment. As expected, we found that task-related experience did improve performance; however, the effect of task format was not consistent with earlier research.","PeriodicalId":312878,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fourth Annual Symposium on Human Interaction with Complex Systems","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-03-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127171705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
