Hence studies have been undertaken to identify the best match of management techniques at various organizational development stages. Considering that the underlying characteristics of the life cycle model has been established more than three decades ago, the aim of this study is to re-examine the consistency of these organizational characteristics in defining the life cycle stages over years. Based on Miller and Friesen’s (1984) organizational model, this paper reevaluates the criteria of the life cycle classification scheme focusing on the growth and maturity stages. Data was collected through a questionnaire survey to top–level management of profit-oriented service firms operating in Malaysia. Using cluster analysis, the service firms are grouped according to the established criteria defining their life cycle stages namely, their strategy, the organizational structure and management decision making style. The findings suggest some inconsistencies with the initial description of growth and maturity levels’ criteria. Despite the expectation that the level of complexity of management approaches progress through the life cycle, the findings indicate that growth firms has higher mean score in all measurable items defining their stage of growth. The results also imply the likeliness of other factors influencing firms’ adaptation to changes. Keywords: Organizational life cycles; service organisations; growth and maturity stages ABSTRAK Pemahaman tentang jenis perubahan di dalam dan antara tahap kitaran hayat organisasi mungkin berupaya mengenalpasti model keberkesanan yang sesuai untuk diaplikasi. Oleh yang demikian, kajian telah dilakukan untuk mengenalpasti padanan teknik pengurusan yang terbaik di pelbagai tahap perkembangan organisasi. Memandangkan ciri-ciri yang mendasari model kitaran hayat telah dibentuk lebih dari tiga dekad yang lalu, kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengkaji konsistensi ciri tersebut dalam mendefinisikan tahap kitaran hayat masa kini. Menggunakan model organisasi cadangan Miller and Friesen’s (1984), kertas ini akan menilai semula kriteria skema klasifikasi kitaran hayat itu dengan menumpu kepada tahap pertumbuhan dan kematangan. Data telah dikutip melalui survei soalselidik kepada pengurus atasan firma perkhidmatan berorientasi keuntungan yang beroperasi di Malaysia. Dengan menggunakan analisis kluster, firma perkhidmatan dikelompokkan berdasarkan kriteria yang mendefinisikan tahap kitaran hayat mereka iaitu strategi, struktur organisasi dan cara pengurusan membuat keputusan. Di samping itu, kajian ini juga bertujuan untuk mengkaji peranan keterikatan kerja sebagai pengantara terhadap hubungan antara kecerdasan emosi dengan komitmen afektif. Memandangkan masih kurang kajian empirikal dijalankan dalam mengkaji peranan keterikatan kerja sebagai pengantara terutamanya di antara hubungan kecerdasan emosi dengan komitmen afektif, maka kajian ini dilihat dapat menambahkan sumber literatur kepada pengkaji lain. Kajian telah dijalankan ke atas sampel seramai 372 pegawai polis di lima negeri iaitu Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor, Sarawak dan Sabah. Pengujian hipotesis telah dilakukan dengan menggunakan analisis PLS-SEM. Hasil analisis mendapati: (1) empat dimensi kecerdasan emosi iaitu menilai emosi diri (SEA), mengenal emosi orang lain (OEA), menggunakan emosi (UOE) dan mengawal emosi (ROE) mempunyai hubungan secara langsung yang positif dan signifikan dengan keterikatan kerja; (2) keterikatan kerja mempunyai hubungan secara langsung yang positif dan signifikan dengan komitmen afektif; (3) keterikatan kerja mempunyai kesan pengantara terhadap hubungan antara keempat-empat dimensi kecerdasan emosi (SEA, OEA, UOE dan ROE) dengan komitmen afektif. Hasil kajian ini telah membuktikan bahawa keterikatan kerja berperanan sebagai pengantara di antara hubungan kecerdasan emosi dengan komitmen afektif. Penemuan ini juga menandakan bahawa kepentingan elemen kecerdasan emosi dalam mempengaruhi kesetiaan dan komitmen pegawai polis. Kata kunci: Kecerdasan emosi; keterikatan kerja; komitmen afektif; pegawai polis ABSTRACT The aim of this study was to investigate the direct relationship between emotional intelligence and job engagement, and the relationship between job engagement and affective commitment. In addition, this study also aims to examine the role of job engagement as a mediator on the relationship between emotional intelligence and affective commitment. As there is scarce empirical studies conducted with regard to the role of job engagement as a mediator, particularly between emotional intelligence and affective commitment, this study contributes towards enriching in this field of study. The study was conducted using a sample of 372 police officers in five states, namely Kuala Lumpur, Selangor, Johor, Sarawak and Sabah. Hypothesis testing was analysed using PLS-SEM analysis. The questionnaires was sent to a sample consist of 217 employees working in diverse industries in service sector. The results from Structural Equation Modeling indicate support for the mediating role of work enggagement, but not the moderating role of work experience. This suggests that psychological capital is a distant precursor of intention to turnover and affects it indirectly through work engagement. Practical implications and directions for future research have been discussed in detail.. In Malaysia, Ar-Rahnu concept is applied by Islamic pawn broking industry. Thus, the practitioners called Islamic Pawn broking product as “Ar-Rahnu”. There are no studies that conceptualize relationship value of Ar-Rahnu and its dimensions as the decisive factor in Ar-Rahnu development in Malaysia. Study of long-term relationship between customer and institutions can be an indicator of Ar-Rahnu development. The long-term relationship study proves and verifies the transparency of business. However, the study about the decisive factors of long-term relationship in Ar-Rahnu industry is lacked. The aim of this paper is to prove the effect of Ar-Rahnu relationship value and its dimensions towards the long-term relationship between customer and institutions. This research is conducted among Ar-Rahnu customers within seven Ar-Rahnu institutions which are situated in Central Zone of Malaysia. Two hundred and six respondents were selected to answer a set of adapted questionnaires. The conceptual model of this paper has been validated by the confirmatory factor analysis (CFA). The analysis of Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) shows that all the dimensions of Ar-Rahnu ‘benefits’ produce a significant effect on long-term relationship but the ‘sacrifices’ give insignificant effect. The finding can improve the shariah justification on Islamic pawn broking. The value of this study lies in its effort to propose to practitioners the enhancement of marketing system regarding the most preferences and matter of concern by customers about Ar-Rahnu product. Di Malaysia, Konsep Ar-Rahnu telah diaplikasikan di dalam industri Pajak Gadai Islam. Oleh yang demikian, para pengamal menamakan produk Pajak Gadai Islam sebagai Ar-Rahnu. Masih belum ada kajian yang berkonsepkan Nilai hubungan Ar-Rahnu dan dimensi- dimensinya sebagai faktor penentu kepada pembangunannya di Malaysia. A possible cause of poor SME performance is weak corporate governance. However, the corporate governance of SMEs is rarely investigated. Ownership structure provides SMEs with a monitoring mechanism that enhances performance. This study examines the relationships between board characteristics (including size, composition boards, CEO duality, expertise, and ethnicity) and SME performance in Malaysia. This study also explores how such relationships can be moderated by monitoring ownership structure. Survey results on SMEs in Klang Valley and Selangor areas show that non-executive boards and CEO duality are significantly and positively related to firm performance. In comparison, management ownership is significantly and negatively related to performance. Board size, expertise, ethnicity, and family ownership are not significantly related to SME performance. Findings indicate that good corporate governance improves decision making and firm performance. Furthermore, agency theory can explain conflict of interest in SMEs and the importance of corporate governance in enhancing their performance. Prestasi yang lemah ini berlaku mungkin akibat tadbir urus korporat yang tidak kukuh. Namun, bilangan kajian tadbir urus korporat PKS sangat sedikit. Kajian lepas menunjukkan struktur pemilikan merupakan mekanisma pemantauan yang meningkatkan prestasi PKS. Kajian ini meneliti hubungan ciri lembaga pengarah (termasuk saiz, komposisi ahli, pengarah urusan dualiti, kepakaran dan jenis etnik) dengan prestasi PKS di Malaysia. Kajian ini turut meneroka peranan struktur pemilikan menguatkan hubungan tersebut. Hasil tinjauan PKS di sekitar Lembah Klang dan Selangor menunjukkan ahli lembaga pengarah bukan eksekutif dan pengarah urusan dualiti masing-masing mempengaruhi prestasi syarikat secara positif dan signifikan. Pemilikan pengurusan pula mempengaruhi prestasi syarikat secara negatif dan signifikan. Hubungan yang signifikan tidak wujud antara saiz lembaga pengarah, kepakaran, jenis etnik dan pemilikan keluarga dengan prestasi PKS. Secara keseluruhan, hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa tadbir urus korporat yang baik meningkatkan proses pembuatan keputusan dan prestasi syarikat. Keprihatinan terhadap kelestarian alam sekitar telah membuatkan sektor ekopelancongan mendapat tempat dihati pelancong yang mahu melihat kestabilan ekosistem dan kelestarian sejagat dicapai selaras dengan kemajuan sektor pelancongan tersebut. Bagi memastikan kejayaan digapai, pengusaha destinasi ekopelancongan perlu mengambil peranan dan turut bertanggungjawab terhadap keseluruhan kualiti perkhidmatan yang disediakan terutamanya dari segi pengurusan, penyelenggaraan, infrastruktur dan aktiviti pemasaran. Tanpa perlaksanaan dan pemantauan yang baik, pengunjung tidak akan dapat menikmati kepuasan secara holistik. Kelestarian dalam sektor pelancongan amnya dan ekopelancongan khasnya adalah penting untuk menjamin kehadiran pelancong secara berterusan. Oleh yang demikian, kajian ini dicorak untuk menganalisa kualiti perkhidmatan (SERVQUAL) destinasi ekopelancongan di Malaysia dengan melihat pada perbezaan yang wujud di antara jurang persepsi dan jangkaan pelancong dengan mengaplikasikan ‘Gap Analysis Model’. Kepuasan pelancong dikaji menggunakan item penilaian persepsi dan jangkaan berdasarkan 5 dimensi SERVQUAL. Dimensi yang diukur melalui skor item persepsi dan jangkaan telah menunjukkan bahawa pelancong mencapai tahap kepuasan dengan nilai jurang -0.731, yang memberi indikasi bahawa kepuasan terhadap kualiti perkhidmatan adalah pada tahap yang baik. Dapatan kajian melalui ‘Gap Analysis Model’ ini adalah penting untuk mengenal pasti jenis kualiti perkhidmatan yang berada pada tahap kritikal dan perlu diperbaiki oleh pengusaha destinasi ekopelancongan agar kelestarian sektor pelancongan terutamanya ekopelancongan dapat dilaksanakan secara tuntas. Concern for environmental sustainability has made the ecotourism sector bloomed and attracted the tourists who want to see stability and sustainability of the global ecosystem is in line with the progress of the tourism sector. In ensuring this is met, operators of tourist destination should be responsible for the overall service quality provided by its ecotourism destination, particularly in terms of management, maintenance, infrastructure and marketing activities. If this is not implemented and monitored properly it can lead to the unholistic formation of the tourist dissatisfaction. Sustainability in the tourism sector in general and ecotourism in particular is critical for determining the presence of tourists to a destination is assured. This study applied the theory of Planned Behaviour (TPB) to test the proposed relationship. This research applies a quantitative approach that uses a cross-sectional questionnaire survey in order to test the proposed hypotheses. A total of 122 palm oil companies in Sabah, Malaysia were identified and collected data were analysed using the partial least squares and structural equation modelling. The findings of this study confirmed the Theory of Planned Behaviour as a great predictor of behavioural intention. In addition, knowledge, past experience and personal value were also found to have significant relationship and this resulted into the conclusion that knowledge, past experience and personal value positively influence the attitude amongst growers and millers towards RSPO. The result of this study has proven that the TPB model is a valuable, practical and has a high potential to predict human behavioural intention. Keywords: Sustainability; business; management; environmental management; RSPO; sustainable agriculture ABSTRAK Kajian ini bertujuan untuk meneliti hubungkait pengetahuan, nilai peribadi dan pengalaman lepas pengurus ladang dan kilang di dalam gunapakai RSPO. Kajian ini mengaplikasikan Teori TPB untuk mengukur hubungkait yang dicadangkan. Kajian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif yang melibatkan borang soal selidik di dalam mengkaji semua hipotesis. Sejumlah 122 syarikat di dalam industri kelapa sawit di Sabah telah dikenalpasti sebagai sampel untuk kajian ini. Kajian ini menggunakan PLS and SEM sebagai alat untuk menguji hubungkait yang dicadangkan. Kajian ini mendapati kesemua pembolehubah luaran adalah signifikan terhadap hubungkait yang dicadangkan dan memberikan kesimpulan bahawa pengetahuan, pengalaman lepas dan nilai peribadi mempunyai hubungan dan kesan positif terhadap sikap di dalam gunapakai RSPO. Hasil kajian ini menunjukkan bahawa Teori TPB merupakan satu teori yang kukuh dan sesuai di dalam meramal niat kelakuan manusia. In the past literature, ERM had been argued to increase firm value but empirical evidence shows mixed and inconclusive results. Using sample from 2004 to 2012, this paper furthers the analysis on the relationship between ERM and firm performance among technology firms in Malaysia. Indeed, technology industry is the fastest growing and a volatile industry, which requires continuous innovation. These make technology firms more prone to risk exposure. In analyzing this issue, dynamic panel data is employed to allow cross-sectional and time series analysis. Our results show that the implementation of ERM in the previous year has strong negative relationship with firm value at 1 percent significance level. It supports the argument that the effect of ERM is not immediately realized as well as entails high implementation cost. The findings provide useful input and insight in formulating new policy in relation to corporate governance, particularly ERM in Malaysia. Dalam kajian-kajian lepas, ERM dikatakan mampu untuk meningkatkan nilai firma tetapi bukti empirikal menunjukkan dapatan yang bercampur-campur dan berbeza-beza. Dengan menggunakan sampel dari tahun 2004-2012, kajian ini menganalisis hubungan di antara ERM and nilai firma di kalangan firma-firma berasaskan teknologi di Malaysia. Ini adalah kerana sektor teknologi merupakan industri yang berkembang pesat dan mempunyai kemeruapan yang tinggi, disamping memerlukan inovasi yang berterusan. Ini menyebabkan firma-firma teknologi lebih terdedah kepada risiko. Untuk menganalisis dan mengupas isu ini, data panel dinamik digunakan untuk membolehkan analisis keratan rentas dan siri masa dibuat. Hasil daripada kajian ini mendapati bahawa perlaksanaan ERM pada tahun sebelumnya mempunyai hubungan negatif dengan nilai firma pada aras keertian 1 peratus dan seterusya menyokong pendapat yang mengatakan bahawa kesan perlaksanaan ERM tidak akan dapat dilihat serta merta dan juga perlaksanaan ERM memerlukan kos yang tinggi. Kajian ini juga memberikan input dan pandangan yang berguna dalam memformulasi polisi berkaitan dengan urus tadbir, terutama perlaksanaan ERM di Malaysia. Kaedah ekonometrik siri masa iaitu model ARCH dan GARCH telah digunakan untuk menentukan tahap kemeruapan harga saham dalam tiga tempoh iaitu sebelum, semasa dan selepas krisis subprima. Harga saham dalam sektor kewangan menunjukkan kemeruapan yang berkelangsungan bagi tempoh sebelum dan semasa krisis. Manakala, harga saham di sektor pengeluaran industri merupakan sektor yang paling stabil dalam tempoh semasa krisis. Dapatan model EGARCH pula menunjukkan bahawa hanya harga saham di sektor pembinaan yang meruap secara berpanjangan semasa krisis. Implikasi dasar daripada kajian ini menjelaskan pelabur berpotensi seharusnya memilih saham di sektor pengeluaran industri sebagai portfolio pelaburan mereka kerana mempunyai kemeruapan yang secara relatifnya lebih stabil berbanding dengan sektor yang lain. Strategi pelaburan yang mempelbagaikan portfolio pelaburan dapat mengurangkan elemen risiko dan menjana pulangan. Kata kunci: Kemeruapan; sektor ekonomi; pelaburan; pelabur berpotensi ABSTRACT This paper aims to examine the volatility of stock prices by sub-sectors of the economy in the Malaysian Bourse, and also to identify the sub-sectors that have persistence volatility. Time series econometrics methods namely ARCH and GARCH models are used in identifying the level of stock prices volatility in three periods, that is, before, during and after the subprime crisis. The stock prices of financial sector showed a persistency of volatility for the period of pre and during crisis. While, the stock prices of industrial production sector is relatively the most stable than others in the period of during and post-crisis. The results using EGARCH model revealed that stock prices of construction sector has a persistency of volatility during the crisis periods. The policy implication of this study shows that the potential investors should consider to invest in the industrial production sector because the stock prices is relatively more stable than others sector. Investment strategy to diversify investment portfolio can reduce the element of risk and generate returns. The performance appraisal process is important in organization in assessing the performance of employees and conflict is inevitable during the management of this process. However, there is lack of research being conducted in exploring conflict during the performance appraisal process specifically in Malaysia. Therefore, this study will explore on the process of managing performance appraisal and how it affects employee’s performance. The study was conducted using qualitative approach which involves face-to-face interviews with 15 participants which consists of the top managements and executives from two organisations. The respondents were involved in the process of performance appraisal in their organisations in Malaysia. The findings show that there exists conflict in the performance appraisal process and the effect that it has on the employee involved two aspects – emotion and motivation. Keywords: Conflict; performance appraisal; qualitative approach ABSTRAK Kajian ini dijalankan untuk mengenalpasti kewujudan konflik dalam proses penilaian prestasi dan kesannya terhadap prestasi pekerja dalam organisasi. Penilaian prestasi merupakan satu mekanisme penting yang membolehkan organisasi menilai keberkesanan dan sumbangan pekerja terhadap organisasi. Namun dalam menguruskan penilaian prestasi, konflik tidak dapat dielakkan bilamana pihak pengurusan perlu memberi penilaian terhadap pencapaian para pekerja. Kajian berkaitan penilaian prestasi masih kurang mendapat perhatian dalam kalangan pengkaji, khususnya dalam konteks organisasi di Malaysia. Maka, kajian ini bertujuan untuk mengenalpasti kewujudan konflik dalam organisasi yang dikaji dan seterusnya meneliti kesannya terhadap prestasi pekerja. Kajian ini telah dijalankan terhadap dua buah organisasi di Malaysia menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif. Kaedah temubual bersemuka telah dijalankan terhadap 15 orang peserta yang terdiri daripada pengurus sebagai penilai dalam penilaian prestasi serta para pekerja atau eksekutif yang dinilai. Hasil kajian ini mendapati kewujudan konflik dalam proses penilaian prestasi yang memberi kesan terhadap motivasi dan emosi pekerja dan penilai.
