Then, the baseband is interfiame encoded using a simple 3-D block-matching method and ILAVQ search algorithm. To reduce the complexity, the high-bands are encoded using the same search technique with the basic LAVQ. The simulation results show that good quality pictures can be obtained at a bit rate as low as 0.286 bpp (about 14.772 Mbits/sec). This rate will facilitate the transmission of three HDTV channels via a DS3 rated 45 Mbits/sec channel.","PeriodicalId":306595,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of International Conference on Consumer Electronics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127186427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this papec we present a cost-effective method for connecting multimedia terminals in a residence to the external broadband network, so as to support multiple simultaneous user sessions. At the heart of the proposed design is a Home Network Controller that terminates the extemal broadband network upon its entry into a home, and enables media distribution within the home by employing existing networking technologies, such as coaxial cable for real-time multimedia delivery to television sets, and Ethernet for data communication to home computers.","PeriodicalId":306595,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of International Conference on Consumer Electronics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125584066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The results show that high definition pictures (HDTV) with reduced contrast have a subjective quality comparable to that of pictures with standard definition (SDTV) and high contrast. Tests were carried out at the HDTV design viewing distance: 3 times the screen height (DVD=3H). A test using the preferred viewing distance (PVD) was also carried out. The PVD is a subjective parameter, a function of the screen height. For the 38\", HDTV, 16/9 screen used in this test, the PVD was 5.2H. The results show that the design of new displays for HDTV should guarantee large screen with adequate contrast in order that the higher definition contribution not be made useless.","PeriodicalId":306595,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of International Conference on Consumer Electronics","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-06-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114445870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
