The use of detailed and realistic 3D body models allows an accurate prediction of the induced EM quantities. The aim of this study is to present an improved model of the female breast that reproduces more realistically the shape and tissue distribution in the female chest area. Such model was combined with the female Virtual Population member, Ella, to evaluate the influence of the breast shape in applications such as a plane-wave exposure. Results suggested that an accurate model of the female body is useful in all numerical studies that aim at precisely estimating the induced E-field.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"335 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114389123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The five personality traits, as identified by the Big Five system, are traditionally assessed by using self-report questionnaires that are subject to bias problems. For this reason, the need for an automatic personality assessment method has emerged. Assessing personality from EEG signals recorded as a response to specific stimuli has shown promising results. In this work, we adopted the EEGNet, a compact CNN model developed for EEG decoding, to implement an automatic personality trait binary classifier. For this purpose, we used the EEG traces of the AMIGOS dataset, which were acquired on 38 subjects during the visualization of emotional videos. Different types of data preprocessing and different model hyperparameters were tested. The best performing model achieves classification accuracy of 0.93 for Agreeableness, 0.92 for Extroversion, 0.90 for Conscientiousness, 0.89 for Emotional Stability and 0.89 for Openness.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117233779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Likewise, power system planners and policy makers aim to assess the effects of large-scale adoption of energy technologies. This paper presents the principal data sources and building blocks for spatiotemporal models that can be used to simulate the large-scale adoption of distributed energy resources. We explain the advantages of the estimates/forecasts obtained by these methods and limitations modelers and decision-makers face during implementation. Finally, we provide an overview over the various use cases for such models in power systems, outlining the advantages and barriers of each model typology for these domains. This comparison shows a trend towards computationally heavier and more complex models-based approaches rooted in Artificial Intelligence, such as Agent-based Modelling, mainly applied to consumer characterization or electricity distribution network planning.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"1083 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116033701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Intended for the benchmarking of the performance of microneedle-based dry electrodes against that of commercial wet electrodes, the device consists of two MAX86150 ECG analog front-ends and an ESP32 system on chip, which has built in wireless facilities. An I2 C serial communication was established for the data transfer from sensor to host and vice-versa. Further, the device was enclosed in a 3-D printed housing for wearability and signal recording purposes. Two female snap fasteners were attached to the rear side of housing and the adhesive part of gel electrodes was used to affix the device onto the chest. ECG signals were measured simultaneously using gel and microneedle-based dry electrodes, and data was transferred via Bluetooth to a laptop where a Labview-based GUI was used for recording and signal analysis.The performance of the electrodes was assessed based on correlation coefficient and kurtosis, estimated for the 16 s of the recorded ECG signal. Microneedle-based dry electrodes and commercial wet electrodes show comparable results in terms of signal characteristics and correlation (r = 0.94). In addition, kurtosis values were more than 5 for the recorded signal from both the electrodes, confirming the usability of the dry electrodes and the robustness of the device.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"120 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116359106","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Contemporary mitigating frameworks incorporate Network Intrusion Detection Systems (NIDS) and Network Intrusion Prevention Systems (NIPS) whose architecture branches on either signature-based or anomaly-based detection. Signature-based systems offer higher detection rates; however they require tedious manual work to set up signature rules, and are incapable of learning through network traffic - missing out on attacks whose signature is unknown. Alternatively, anomaly-based systems are capable of mitigating the shortcomings of signature-based systems but suffer from high false-positive rates. In this paper, we propose an automated machine learning architecture for IoT-enabled smart energy grids capable of deciding whether to generate rules for signature-based systems. Results are presented using an IoT dataset comprising MITM (man in the middle) attacks, indicating the potential of this framework for intelligent threat mitigation in smart energy infrastructures.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"317 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116366177","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, new rules to make distributed generation participate in network stability are needed. Consequently, national and international grid codes have been updated requiring distributed generators to supply ancillary services, such as the voltage and frequency regulation, to ensure the right level of adequacy and safety of the power systems. Most LV grid connected PV inverters are only setup to inject power at unity power factor, meaning they only produce active power. However, the Italian Standards, and in particular the CEI 0-21, require to PV inverters of residential systems to include the possibility of being able to absorb or supply reactive energy. This allows to limit the over / under voltages problems. In this context, the inverters’ manufacturers, having to meet the standards, have introduced the necessary changes in order to allow residential inverters, already on the market, the ability to set the power factor. In this regard, these new potentialities have been exploited in order to study the inverter performance with the variation of the power factor, considering both the inductive and the capacitive behaviour. In particular, the presented paper focuses on the experimental tests on a hybrid inverter system for residential use with the aim of evaluating the dependence of inverter efficiency on the power factor. The tests were performed at the StorageX-Lab of Enel-X at the ENEL Innovation HubLab in Catania.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"121 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123450554","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The aim of this research is to understand the economic impact that these flexibility services could cause on possible future world scenarios. This paper presents the main findings obtained from the MERLIN project, which explores and compares the techno-economic impact of managing network operational constraints through traditional reinforcement and flexibility services over a ten-year forecast period. Two case studies were carried out, the realistic case (RC), which focusess on realistic load and generation forecasts, and the worst-case (WC), which is what is traditionally performed by DNO system planners to model the impact of peak demand when generation is turned off over a period of time. The analysis was conducted on the 33/11 kV network in Fort William, (Western Scottish Highlands). The study revealed insights into the anticipated costs of traditional reinforcement and influenced when flexibility services would be a more favorable investment option. Results suggest that flexibility services are preferred only to deal with thermal constraints in the 33 kV line, with no or negligible savings in the 11 kV line. The results show discounted savings of around £175k for four year deferral (by 2050), equivalent to 12% of reinforcement costs.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123459350","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The idea of circuital emulation is here proposed for the first time in the field of electromagnetic vibration harvesters. In particular, a circuital emulation technique based on a cheap hardware system with easily adjustable parameters is much more easy, fast and practical, at least for a preliminary though very important and necessary analysis. This is particularly relevant when the analysis is focused on the AC/DC electronic interfaces between harvesters and DC loads. Starting from the characteristics that are typically provided by manufacturers of harvesters, the parameters of the harvester circuital model are derived and used for the implementation of a simple and fully electronic circuital emulator based on an op-amp inductor realization. Experimental results are presented and discussed.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125829768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we propose the creation of a complete digital twin based on a mathematical model integrated with field-measured data. The model’s validity was then verified with experiments performed on the bench. The presented model is cascaded and describes the three main features of the system: the heaters, the view factor explaining the effect of each heater on the sheet, and finally, a model of heating a flat polymer sheet. Due to the low complexity of the proposed mathematical model, it allows to develop advanced control strategies and to perform analysis and optimization of the principal geometrical parameters of the system. Furthermore, it is able to support the identification of the best configuration and placement of the sensory system.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129483482","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to its erratic nature and complexity, the progression of the disease differs from person to person, making it difficult to keep track of the patient’s progress. These factors, together with the limited number of annual clinical appointments, create the need to have a tool that can help patients and healthcare professionals better manage Parkinson’s outside of the clinical environment. PDapp strives to address this need combining mHealth features with the capabilities of the iHandU appcessory, a novel and seamless wearable device designed to measure wrist rigidity, bradykinesia (slow movement), and tremor, thus enabling continuous effective follow-up, while connecting patients and clinicians remotely. The PDapp system is comprised of a mobile application where patients can manage their medication, self-perform various symptom tests, and maintain clinicians informed of relevant events; a specialized web dashboard for clinicians to monitor all their patient’s history and recent events; and a cloud database that exhibits existing data in real-time. The first prototype integrates all these components and provides a promising proof-of-concept that, with a few additions, can be a system that brings value to Parkinson’s management. This application design and functionalities were developed jointly with clinicians, addressing their problems and needs. The collected feedback was very positive stating that its usability and simplicity is completely suitable for patients to use. PDapp will introduce a complete and innovative methodology to follow-up PD patient’s disease progression and support clinicians during appointments and patients at home, guiding medication adjustment for better disease management. This system is intended as one more step to the PD mHealth ecosystem, improving follow-up and disease therapy yet reducing clinicians’ workload.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129807910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
