Indeed, machines can be switched off to avoid energy waste, although a start up is required to resume the service. Because of system complexity and interactions among control parameters, the performance of production systems composed by controlled machines is difficult to predict. The paper analyzes a serial flow line where machines can be controlled for energy saving purposes using butter level thresholds. The multi-objective goal is to minimize the energy consumed to produce parts and to maximize the throughput. The Pareto front obtained is analyzed by mean of numerical cases and the work provides useful insights for the energy management of manufacturing systems. Discrete Event Simulation is used to evaluate system performance. For the analyzed scenarios, moving along the Pareto front, from highest to lowest throughput, more and more machines are controlled.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"81 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133813810","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the high price of the HFC, it is difficult to directly supply the high DC voltage of the inverter for driving the traction motor, a step-up DC-DC converter is required between the HFC and the inverter. However, HFC hybrid railway system has more limited space and weight compared with the general railway system, due to the additional space of hydrogen-fuel-cell and battery. As a result, a step-up DC/DC converter with high-power-density and light-weight is required. This paper describes a propulsion system for the HFC railway system and reviews step-up DC-DC converters suitable for high-power density and light-weight through various analyses. By selecting interleaving control and combination resonant LLC and 3-level buck converters with ‘parallel-input, series-output, and modular structure’ as step-up DC/DC converters, a new DC/DC converter suitable for high-power density and light-weight is proposed through their ripple analysis of input current/output voltage, design, efficiency, and volume. Finally, their operation and parameter design are verified by the PSIM simulation.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133498043","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to ensure the appropriate product quality, it is extremely important to set the rolling mill correctly, which is usually determined by predefined recipes. In this paper, a decision support tool is proposed that enables recipe adjustment for individual workpieces. It is based on the analysis of historical process data and its impact on the associated key performance indicators (KPIs). To cover those, a flexible and cost-efficient Radio Access Network (RAN) is essential as proposed by the Open-RAN (O-RAN) concept. In addition, the deployment of O-RAN 5G networks can be expedited by considering network access, aggregation, and core locations of legacy technologies, where physical requisites as power supply, fiber optic links, and others are already met. With this in mind, this paper extends previous simulation work that proposed a radio network planning algorithm for 5G Millimeter Wave (mmWave) small cells to O-RAN-based networks. The backhaul planning algorithm considers both the 5G/O-RAN QoS constraints, a real 4th Generation (4G) network topology, and the respective Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) from a Mobile Network Operator (MNO) as the foundation to plan an O-RAN compliant backhaul network. Our findings identified that the latency of current networks is greatly determined by the network load. In the utmost case, comparing the network baseline and busy hour KPIs, the baseline planned O-RAN network requires 7%of the equivalent busy hour network nodes. This approach has the potential to help MNOs to outline an enlightened strategy, minimizing Capital Expenditure (CAPEX) and augmenting QoS towards upgrading legacy networks to O-RAN 5G networks.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134480196","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, a simulation model for the evaluation of the electrical behavior of a photovoltaic system, connected to the grid and equipped with a battery storage system, is proposed. The model is implemented in Python, and it is directly connected to the European PVGis portal to use temperature and irradiance profiles from arbitrary locations. The simulation system is coupled with a metaheuristic optimization algorithm to determine the optimal sizing of the power plant, considering as cost function the energy taken from the grid. Optimal parameters such as the number of panels (PV area) and battery’s capacity are obtained for several boundary conditions.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133675123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Charged Particle Veto detector consists of three separate modules, each with an area of 200 x 230 cm2, placed on a PHOton spectrometer detector module. A typical event size for the Charged Particle Veto Detector consists of 1.3 Kbytes for Pb-Pb particles. The maximum event readout rate that the Charged Particle Veto detector can currently achieve is 10 kHz at 1% occupancy. Due to this technical limitation, a new electronic front-end readout system is currently being developed that can detect more than 10 nb-1 Pb-Pb collisions at a luminosity of up to 6 x 1027 cm-2s-1. In this work, we present the implementation of a new application-specific data readout integrated circuit for the charged particle veto detector fabricated in 180-nm semiconductor technology. This application specific integrated circuit-based processor can process 192 analogue channels simultaneously and improve the current readout rate by at least five times to 50 kHz. In addition, it includes an integrated zero-suppression technique, applies a triple modular redundancy strategy and a parallel cyclic redundancy check architecture for error detection and correction, and has four integrated 1 Gbps serializers for data transmission over low-voltage differential channels. The results of this development have shown that the use of this unique application specific integrated circuit-based processor in such front-end electronic readout detector systems results in at least 70 percent reduction in the use of costly components (e.g., field-programmable gate arrays, digital signal processors, clock circuits, decoupling components, etc.), a tenfold increase in readout rate, i.e., from 4 kHz to at least 50 kHz, and a reduction in power consumption from 5.2 mW to 0.625 mW per analogue channel compared to the current Charged Particle Veto detector front-end readout system. In addition, the developed application-specific 180 nm semiconductor architecture with 4 parallel readout circuits can be easily interfaced with other vendor-specific analogue-to-digital converters currently available on the market, further facilitating the upgrade process of data acquisition systems.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"213 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133809674","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed method employs a specific type of GNN that considers different types of nodes to allow the direct translation to the generator and load buses, and the branches present in power systems. The GNN model is trained with modified versions of IEEE test cases by permuting the configuration of the electrical grid for the distinct samples used during training. The training is carried out in an unsupervised manner, and the results are compared with a conventional and trustworthy Newton-Raphson based method. The presented results are shown to be accurate, and perform acceptably well even when tested on grids of different size from the ones they observed during training.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121729795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As they will consist of many sensors gathering information from its environment, new schemes for managing these large amounts of data are needed. For this purpose, we review Over the Air (OTA) computing in the context of estimation and detection. For distributed scenarios, such as a Wireless Sensor Network, it has been proven that a separation theorem does not necessarily hold, whereas analog schemes may outperform digital designs. We outline existing gaps in the literature, evincing that current state of the art requires a theoretical framework based on analog and hybrid digital-analog schemes that will boost the evolution of OTA computing. Furthermore, we motivate the development of 3D networks based on OTA schemes, where satellites function as sensors. We discuss its integration within the satellite segment, delineate current challenges and present a variety of use cases that benefit from OTA computing in 3D networks.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125201768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this study performance analysis was made for BLDC motors used in wheel applications in light electrical vehicles on issues such as efficiency, speed, and power density. In this study, two types of BLDC motors, axial flux (AF) and hub (outer rotor-radial flux) motor were simulated, optimized, and experimented. Both of them were studied considering multi-parameter objectives mainly, stator yoke flux density, rotor yoke flux density, air gap flux density, efficiency, torque/weight, and speed. The credibility of the models performed has been confirmed by comparing the results of simulation and measurement on rated values 10 kW, 72V (Axial) and 1 kW, 50V (Hub) 3 phase, star connected motors. To optimize the motor design comprehensively, a genetic algorithm (GA) has been realized for each motor.
