Different control strategies used to control the output voltage are compared. The control parameters used to perform the control is the input voltage, the duty cycle and the operating frequency. The control to output voltage Laplace transfer functions are derived and the respective PID controllers are designed. The dynamic behaviors of the closed-loop systems are compared through Simulink simulations.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126900486","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Those needs can be supported by the integration of satellites in 5G systems due to the unique characteristics of satellites in terms of higher coverage, reliability, and availability. To minimize blind exploitation of new systems, new technologies should be verified and enhanced before being implemented to reduce the required cost and time. Creating a System Level Simulator (SLS) is an excellent way to evaluate new ideas and test novel systems. In this work, we present an open-source SLS based on the software Network Simulator 3 (NS3). This tool allows simulating 5G Satellite-Terrestrial Integrated Networks (STIN) and overcomes the state-of-the-art solutions by supporting Non-Terrestrial Networks (NTN) handover decisions, dynamic BandWidth Part (BWP) selection, and Component Carrier (CC) configurations based on different defined traffic profiles.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130650646","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For people with dementia and the elderly in remote care and hospitals, immediately informing caregivers of abnormal behaviour such as a fall can improve their quality of life [2] [3]. Latency occurs when processing massive amounts of continuous data from the Internet of Things devices in the cloud. Network latency impacts latency-sensitive critical real-time applications, such as those used in the healthcare sector [4]. This study seeks to reduce latency and network bandwidth when sending continuous data from wearable sensors in a remote care environment in order to meet the latency requirements of health applications. To reduce latency and network bandwidth, a framework is proposed that deploys edge computing using a geo-distributed intermediate layer of intelligence in the middle of the sensor and cloud layers. It includes raw collected data processing, early sensor fusion, missing data, data reduction and conversion and data storage. The case study is a remote care environment focused on fall detection. The research focuses on fall detection and analysis of sensor data for human fall detection using various activity recognition techniques, threshold-based and Machine Learning algorithms. As a result, a fall activity recorded from the wearable device to the edge server could be processed, predicted, and reported to the caregiver in 294 milliseconds.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126212534","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since induction machine is among the must use motors in electric traction systems. This study presents a technique based on an artificial intelligence approach for the diagnostic and detection of broken rotor under random load. A dataset of a healthy motor and a malfunctioning motor with broken rotor bars were used to get the transient current and voltage signals during the motor starting and steady state. The current data in time domain properties are retrieved then converted using a Fast Fourier Transform to the frequency domain, proceeding to a preprocessing of the converted data, then opting for a supervised machine learning approach to develop a diagnostic model to evaluate whether the motor’s operation is normal or abnormal.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"17 6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125617706","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The advent of new technologies introduced many possibilities and strategies to monitor environments, including those with Cultural Value. This paper introduces effective preventive conservation and details the potential contributions of active environmental control and Internet of Things (IoT) technologies. This strategy is applied through the case study of the Farina tobacco factory in Battipaglia (Italy). The monitoring of environmental parameters was implemented through a remote control system, installing digital sensors inside the structure. Data were collected continuously through integrated supervision, monitoring, and shared management platform, based on web-cloud-IoT technology. The application of IoT systems in climate monitoring and control facilitated the prediction of humidity within the structures being conserved.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130474680","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main objective of the analysis is the evaluation of the economic and environmental implications related to the design choices. Besides the economic viability evaluation, two indices have been used for the analysis, namely the self-consumption rate and self-sufficiency rate, which allowed evaluating the ability of the system to reduce energy request to the grid. As an economic indicator, a modification of the levelized cost of use index is proposed and its application on a prosumer facility is consider so assessing also the benefit derived from selling energy to the grid. A total cost analysis has been carried out in order to discuss the optimal battery sizing solution.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134549660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More specifically, the introduction of smart educational tools can emphasize personalized and custom-made knowledge, interactive learning activities, logical awareness, self-learning and team-based learning. Thanks to these features, it appears that Augmented Reality (AR) in education might be a way to make learning “smarter”. This technology has become more and more popular in language teaching thanks to the high level of active engagement it provides in learners and the favorable outcomes observed through its use [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7]. In order to integrate traditional teaching of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) with multimodal and multisensory interventions, a pilot experiment was carried out with the use of “Bare Conductive Ink”, a tool that helps creating interactive objects and environments through the use of sensors-electrodes and conductive ink. Fifteen students between eight and eleven years old carried out an English activity Learning Unit focused on A1 lexicon (Common European Framework of Reference for Languages) using the smart toolkit to listen, explore and repeat words. Despite further research with more participants is needed for more comprehensive results, the aim of the project was to observe the impact of the tool on students’ level of active engagement and interest in the activities and, above all, to investigate its effectiveness, applicability and ease of use, identifying strengths and hurdles when introducing the “Bare Conductive Ink” in class.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131769336","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many state-of-the-art methods suffer from either poor uncertainty characterization or a high computational burden. This paper proposes a model that is easy to implement, fast to compute, and effective in addressing uncertainty. It is based on the model predictive control algorithm with the addition of uncertainty parameters optimization. For demonstration purposes, the model is applied to a microgrid consisting of a wind turbine, a local load, and battery energy storage. The model seeks to satisfy the local demand at the lowest cost by procuring energy from the battery energy storage, the wind turbine (in its portfolio), or the wholesale market, where wind power output, local demand, and market prices are uncertain parameters. In the presented case study, the upper bounds obtained using our model are close to the perfect information deterministic model values. Hence, this model has a great potential for practical use.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132137601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The platform, based on a multi agent blackboard architecture, is classified as a medical device according to the current EU regulation. Thus it needs extensive tests before being put into service for the planned clinical trials, which calls for a dedicated simulating and testing environment. Materials and Methods: Coordination in CAPABLE is achieved through the Case Manager, a component able to generate and notify events to other interested agent components. For representing and exchanging health care information we have adopted HL7 FHIR as a semantic interoperability standard. Results: FHIR has been exploited to design a structured history of a real patient affected by renal cell carcinoma. A simulator has been developed for automating the whole testing process represented by specific scenarios of the patient’s history. Conclusions: The simulator relies on the events produced by the Case Manager for coordinating the agents. This proved to be effective in checking that the agents reactions to new data showing up on the blackboard comply with the expected behavior.","PeriodicalId":303656,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE 21st Mediterranean Electrotechnical Conference (MELECON)","volume":"70 22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132585971","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
