In addition, with the supercell technique, the propagating modes of phononic band structures with acoustic channel are studied. The glycerin/mercury and vacuum/silicon band structures are the examples employed in this paper. Couplings of propagating modes and point defect modes are also investigated in phononic crystals with channel. From the calculated results, we can find that the defect modes and extended modes are obvious not only for the bulk acoustic waves but also for the surface acoustic waves in phononic crystals. On the other hand, the mode shapes for different defect modes and propagating modes can also be expressed using the plane-wave expansion and supercell techniques. Through a suitable design, the acoustic filters and waveguides are the possible applications in the two-dimensional phononic crystals.","PeriodicalId":302030,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium, 2005.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126590035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To establish the accuracy of the VOS measurements given by the USM, and for traceability purposes, an independent and high-accuracy VOS measurement cell may be used as reference. To include relevant effects of dispersion, the cell should preferably work in the operational frequency range of USMs, e.g. 100-200 kHz, with natural gas under high pressure. Three different transient methods are investigated, aiming to realize a VOS measurement cell, and they are seen to have several common experimental uncertainty sources. In the present work, a two-distance method is discussed in more detail as an example, and some results from measurements in an insulated chamber with air at 1 atm and ca. 25 ◦ C are presented. The relative expanded measurement uncertainty was estimated according to ISO guidelines to 282 ppm (95 % conf. level). One major source of measurement uncertainty was experienced to be small convection currents in the chamber. Without these, the expanded uncertainty would have been about 162 ppm. Such convection effects are expected to be strongly reduced in a properly designed measurement cell. The VOS measurement results were compared with predictions from a VOS model for standard air, including dispersion (J. Acoust. Soc. Amer. 93 (5), pp. 2510-2516, 1993), resulting in a mean deviation of -18 ppm with a two standard deviation spread in the data of 190 ppm over the temperature range.","PeriodicalId":302030,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium, 2005.","volume":"2016 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131055784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Whereas the effective coupling coefficient and its dependency on the layer stack is quite accurately modeled with a simple one-dimensional acousto-electric model (e.g. Masonstransmission line model), the prediction and optimization of the resonators quality factor - particularly for solidly mounted resonators (SMR) - completely fails with this model: whereas a calculation of the acoustic reflectance of a standard quarter-wavelength mirror stack leads to theoretical Q-factors well above 10000, experimental SMR devices with this type of mirror show values of typically well below 1000. This discrepancy is commonly explained by either visco-elastic loss in the materials and/or laterally leaking waves leaving the active resonator area. However, we have found a new, far more important loss mechanism relating to shear waves generated in the device. These waves can be created by injection from the resonators border area as well as by reflection/refraction of longitudinal waves at non-perpendicular angle of incidence to a material interface. In this paper, a quantitative methodology for the optimization of the acoustic mirror layer stack will be proposed. The influence of the mirror structure on the trapping of both longitudinal and shear wave energy will be discussed based on this very simple approach. Trade-offs with respect to the other important device parameters, such as effective coupling coefficient, temperature coefficient of frequency (TCF) and purity of the electrical response, are analyzed. The usefulness of this approach for the optimization of resonator Q-values will be proven by experimental results demonstrating Q-factors of 1500 and higher.","PeriodicalId":302030,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium, 2005.","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131192117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These crystals were 18-23 mm in diameter and 70-100 mm in length. The piezoelectric modulus d11 values (6.21 and 6.92 pC/N) of the LGAS(x=0.9) and LTGA(x=0.5) crystals were slightly larger than that of the pure LGS and La3Ta0.5Ga5.5O14 (LTG) ones (6.08 and 6.89 pC/N), respectively. The LTGA(x=0.5) crystals showed the lowest temperature dependence of d11. The electric resistivity ρ values of the Al-substituted crystals at 400 o C were significantly higher than those of the pure LGS and LTG crystals grown in an oxygen-containing atmosphere. Resonators and filters were of solidly mounted resonator (SMR) type. The acoustic quarter wavelength mirror consisted of high and low acoustic impedance materials, which were either three pairs of molybdenum and silicon dioxide or two pairs of tungsten and silicon dioxide, respectively. Mirrors were designed for 1 and 2 GHz frequencies. Material properties of the zinc oxide films have been studied by x-ray diffraction (including rocking curve), scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Resonators were electrically characterized by vector network analyzer. The highest acoustic coupling coefficient, K = 10.4% at 1.6 GHz, for thin film zinc oxide was achieved. Application of 2000 pulses (sufficient to liquefy the target tissue) resulted in an average 22.4 dB reduction in speckle amplitude. This method may provide effective feedback in ultrasound surgery using cavitation. INTRODUCTION Previous work has shown that under certain conditions, high-intensity pulsed ultrasound can be used to liquefy tissue (1). We are exploring this method as an alternative and complement to traditional thermal therapy techniques. The process of tissue breakdown (we refer to as \"histotripsy\") is thought to occur as a result of repeated subdivision of tissue structure through cavitation. We hypothesize that cavitation induced liquefaction of tissue should produce a significant reduction in standard B-scan imaging speckle amplitude as tissue structure is broken down and the underlying source of speckle backscatter in the MHz regime is reduced. This may provide an effective feedback mechanism for treatment efficacy in ultrasound surgery using cavitation. METHODS Freshly harvested liver samples (less than 6 hours) were placed in degassed saline and then vacuum sealed in thin plastic bags. The samples were placed in the nominal focus of a 1 MHz 512 channel therapeutic array transducer (Imasonic, Besancon, FR). An 8 MHz linear imaging transducer (Siemens Elegra) was placed opposite to the therapeutic transducer very close to the liver sample in order to monitor ultrasound treatments (Fig. 1).","PeriodicalId":302030,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium, 2005.","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128815944","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system employs a unique pulse position modulation (PPM) method combined with spreading codes that are achieved by using SAW matched filters for modulation and de-modulation. The system also employs a unique spreading code to improve the ratio of desired correlation signal to undesired signals (D/U ratio) in this method. We fabricated 4-GHz SAW matched filters and used them in a UWB module comprised of these filters, low noise amplifiers, converters, base-band circuits and an antenna. With the UWB communication system, we achieved 20-Mbps real-time video streaming. The TX and RX power consumption in RF section were 50 mW and 150 mW, respectively. These results indicate that this system is suitable for a wireless personal area network (WPAN) that requires low power consumption.","PeriodicalId":302030,"journal":{"name":"IEEE Ultrasonics Symposium, 2005.","volume":"266 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-09-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134465456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
