IEC 62477-2 has been released as the first standard to introduce arc fault testing and labeling specifically for power electronic converter systems (PECS), of which an ASD is one type. The arc fault requirements of IEC 62477-2 Annex AA have been developed considering the requirements defined in existing switchgear standards and introduces new evaluation methods which include active arc fault mitigation. The paper will examine the benefits provided by the approach in IEC 62477-2 Annex AA including a detailed look at transferability of test results.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125272014","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the oil and gas industry evolves to meet the challenges of the energy transition, including greenhouse gas reduction targets, the application of renewable energy resources behind the meter is a viable strategy to meet these needs. This paper intends to be the first of two discussions centered around the integration of renewable power in upstream oil and gas applications. The authors will discuss the process from feasibility evaluations, including power forecasting and greenhouse gas reduction estimates, to major barriers in selecting locations for development. A key technical challenge considered is integrating inverter-based resources to load serving substations. A case study based on a solar farm in West Texas, which has a relatively low cost of electricity, will be used as a model in this paper. Emphasis will be given to behind-the-meter renewable energy challenges highlighting the different economic incentives as compared to in front of the meter applications.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121653582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it is desirable to detect the existence of abnormal changes in the transformer’s internal condition and determine whether the changes could lead to a failure. Active detection and identification of incipient faults is now possible through online monitoring of abnormal changes in some parameters and the use of diagnostic methods. This paper gives an overview of a transformer monitoring system and measured signals for the diagnosis of incipient faults.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123782816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These may include some requirements of reliability, performance, and other requirements as established by the applicable Industry standards for non-hazardous locations. When those motors are approved by applicable NRTLs (Nationally Recognized Testing Laboratories) or CBs (Certification Body), they assume that the electrical safety requirements are met voluntarily or be approved depending upon local country codes/regulations. Online partial discharge patterns and trending’s were studied to demonstrate if aging conditions were relevant to the motor stator winding. Acquired Phase Resolved Partial Discharge (PRPD) plots were co-related with in-depth stator winding visual inspection which was a collaborative resolution between the Owner, the OEM, and Electrical Motor Services team. A detailed refurbishment and validation test plan was established to reduce surface electrical discharge activity and to extend the in-service life of the motor. A systematic approach with regards to field reconditioning solutions and the life cycle cost reduction was followed and will be explained.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125784756","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This was the first DG differential protection trip since platform commissioning ~12 years back. Investigations revealed that current transformer (CT) casing had cracked to the extent of dislodging CT conductors resulting in differential protection trip.Damaged CTs were replaced by in-stock spare CTs. However, a couple of years later a similar differential trip occurred and was resolved by again replacing damaged CTs with in-stock spares. It became evident that a simple remediation of replacing damaged CTs will not help, as the trips started to happen more frequently only months apart.This paper analyses DG trip incidents, describes root cause failure analysis (RCFA), and presents remedies and learnings to mitigate the issue.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122263175","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A chemical plant’s electrical stability is of highest importance because downtime and unplanned events pose potential risks to the plant, personnel, and environment.This paper describes how rate-of-change of frequency (ROCOF) detection is used to safely island a chemical plant from a utility. This is followed by runback and generation shedding. Decoupling protection design, benefits, and limitations are explored with results from hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing. The ping-pong effect between sheddable loads and generators is discussed and underfrequency-based load shedding as back up is also introduced.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133720675","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is argued in the literature that MPC is well-suited for industrial variable speed drive (VSD) applications, due to its flexible and multi-objective nature. However, the adoption of MPC by industry has been slow. This paper reviews the VSD control strategies currently accepted by industry. It formulates expectations and determines the existing barriers for using MPC in VSD applications. The paper proposes a number of modifications to enhance the MPC performance and to offer new benefits to industry, compared to the existing solutions. The results of the paper are supported by simulations and validated by experiment.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115015294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

PWM pulses can be reflected at the motor end of the cable and increase the peak voltage at the motor terminals. Excessive peak voltage due to voltage reflection, which is exacerbated by cable length and fast IGBT pulse rise times, can cause premature electrical failures in motor windings. Voltage rise, (dv/df) associated with IGBT pulse rise time can also develop shaft voltage that ultimately causes discharge currents to flow through the bearings, leading to premature bearing failure. While these problems can exist in any motor application, they tend to be more pronounced in submersible pumping due to cable length and the high capacitance associated with underground cables. This paper explains multiple effects of PWM voltage on motors and demonstrates a comprehensive approach for protecting both the windings and bearings of ASD fed motors.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123532893","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, detailed analysis is required to study the impact on the offshore power system including harmonics associated with the operation of numerous VSD-driven ESPs, which could lead to distortion of voltage and current waveforms beyond acceptable standard limits. The problem becomes more pronounced when resonance is excited with the presence of long submarine cables and transformers. The authors conducted field measurements using power quality recorders and built a power system model to reproduce the field results using commercially available modeling software. Remedial solutions were studied to alleviate the impact of ESP operation on the offshore power system. Active and passive harmonic filters were studied in terms of effectiveness in meeting company standards for harmonic distortion.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116982792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
