This paper provides a basic overview of the issues that are essential in the decision process when purchasing a new motor and is directed toward the engineer who must specify motors but is not a motor specialist. Since project engineers are regularly expected to justify options selected and purchase recommendations, this paper provides guidance. Process industry motor standards are used in review of motor requirements and options available today.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127445632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are no alternate calculation methods or adjustment factors available to quantify the effects of equipment enclosures, or other conditions where a user maybe indirectly exposed to an internal arcing fault. IEEE C37.20.7, which sets criteria for Arc Resistant Switchgear, does not directly establish potential incident energy exposure levels outside the equipment under test. UL RP 2986 does begin to lay groundwork to quantify incident energy levels outside of enclosed equipment including instrumentation and testing parameters. However, it does not clearly define how to apply said procedures. This paper will address selection of appropriate parameters based on experience with testing low-voltage distribution equipment to the UL RP 2986 practice. Selected test results will be compared with the results of IEEE 1584-2018 calculations. The paper will also discuss the benefits of tested equipment that has been examined to measure the actual incident energy levels outside of enclosed equipment, including identifying situations where a worker may be shielded from incident energy levels greater than 1.2 cal/cm2.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131361042","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper will provide an overview of the newest Low Voltage Solid-State Circuit Breaker technology (SSCB) and how Petroleum and Chemical industry users can take advantage of its ability in eliminating almost all the electro-mechanical stresses applied at the input to any LV ASD when protected with traditional circuit breakers or high-speed protective fuses. This higher level of protection comes through the use of SSCB technologies which provide the lowest let through energy level of any overcurrent protective device available today. At the same time, these devices eliminate risk by reducing harmful arc flash incident energy to near negligible levels while requiring no maintenance.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114522537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In industrial facilities, such as large petroleum processing plants, slow rolling is often used with stand-by pumps to prevent pump casing distortion and shaft bending. This paper covers an industrial application of a slow rolling scheme for up to two motors driven simultaneously utilizing a single Adjustable Speed Drive (ASD). The control system has been fully automated using a Programmable Logic Controller (PLC) interfaced with an upstream Distributed Control Systems (DCS). The scheme provides a cost-effective solution for multi-motor applications by reducing the number of ASDs required, minimizing the required footprint in the substation, improving energy efficiency by eliminating electric power conversion losses, and reducing the overall installation costs. Attention will be given to the control systems architecture, automated modes of operation, electrical configuration, and mechanical performance.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133466863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Introducing lighting controls to further these aims in process environments has been difficult due to the complexity of the hazardous environment, code and facility requirements, installation efforts, and competing maintenance priorities causing slow adoption within facilities. This paper will describe how combining wireless radio communication and environmental sensors integrated with a facility-wide monitoring and control software solution offers new insight into plant operations. This enables identification of opportunities to further reduce energy consumption, track carbon dioxide (CO2) reduction history to meet corporate environmental, social, and governance (ESG) targets, enhance facility safety, and simplify lighting maintenance prioritization. Guidelines for optimizing lighting performance through commissioning and creating custom controls are included. Examples of practical applications of controlling and monitoring lighting in hazardous areas will be reviewed.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127949255","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to expand the application of such a shielding device, this paper presents an analysis of its use to reduce the inverter-induced circulating bearing currents on induction machines. Employing finite element analysis (FEA), 2D and 3D models were developed to clarify the tradeoff between the shield effectiveness and the associated additional heat losses and motor efficiency reduction, considering different geometric arrangements and materials for the shielding device construction. The results provide very good guidelines for the shield design, contributing to its practical application viability. It is shown that it is possible to design a shielding configuration that achieves a high mitigating level with a negligible impact on the motor efficiency and developed torque. Furthermore, comparing calculation models of different complexities, the paper also shows the importance of representing all capacitive couplings inside the motor and the non-uniform current distribution in the shield to determine its effectiveness. Since a large fraction of the motor failures are caused by bearing currents, this paper can provide benefits to key topics for industry, such as equipment reliability and availability.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"58 4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129989404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper will discuss methods to properly determine an accurate bus configuration for various low-voltage (LV) Motor Control Centers (MCCs) in order to meet the current IEEE 1584-2018 standard [1] for proper calculation of the incident energy at various locations. Some of the special techniques and challenges include determining the isolation status of the main circuit breaker, the isolation of low-voltage AC equipment from DC equipment contained within the LV MCC, and an instance in which there were multiple sources of supply contained within the same LV MCC. This paper will discuss real world applications and experiences throughout this project that could be incorporated into future arc flash study practices. This paper will also discuss quality control measures that were used during the arc flash study projects including field data collection processes, verification walk-throughs, and the owner’s Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) process.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129872977","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Substation standardization helps owner-operators simplify the electrification part of projects and reduce project costs by enabling supplier pre-selection early in a project, thus leveraging the supplier’s product expertise to achieve the project goals. The standardization approach also helps end-users ensure consistency in design, minimize cost, and optimize performance levels of electrical assets across multiple vendors and in various asset classes and projects. Plant power requirements are determined mainly by the demands of process equipment. To minimize the downtime, maintaining top operational performance and electrical assets’ reliability are the key considerations in substation standardization. Substation standardization is an opportunity and catalyst for digital transformation; to develop digital substations in a consistent and repeatable manner and enable aggregation of data without interfering with operational control. Thus, enabling digital technologies in electrical substations, including artificial intelligence and machine learning, can improve safety and uptime while reducing the cost of operations and maintenance. By incorporating Substation digitization as a vital element of the substation standardization framework, end-users create a seamless end-to-end solution tailor-made to their organizational needs by bringing together an ecosystem of equipment vendors, engineering partners, and digital solutions or services providers in a consistent approach.","PeriodicalId":301848,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE IAS Petroleum and Chemical Industry Technical Conference (PCIC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121270547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
