With this system, learners in the real world and experts in a virtual world can communicate with each other while sharing not only a 3D virtual world implemented with VRML, but learners' achievements and experts' knowledge. It also realizes databases of real experiences, education supported by knowledgeable experts from all over the world, and virtual tours to accessible natural environment. The system is expected to raise consciousness of environmental protection by providing users with environmental knowledge accumulated in the learning process. On the other hand, the system allows users (i.e., students and educators) to establish synchronous communications through real-time audio connections. In the system, a curriculum is a capability transition network that consists of two kinds of nodes: capability nodes representing teaching outputs and transition nodes organizing tutoring activities. The bridge between capability nodes and transition nodes is the prerequisite links from capability nodes to transition nodes and the output links from transition nodes to capability nodes. In the model, domain knowledge is identified as human capabilities based on Gagné's instructional theory. Transition nodes are modeled after a combination of the task classifications proposed by Gagné and by Bloom. During these learning sessions conflicts then arise since the student must interact with several simulated participants such as the tutor, the companion, or the troublemaker (a companion able to mislead the learner). We call these conflicts external conflicts. Some of them are accidental but others are intentional in order to test the learner's self-confidence and to detect internal conflicts that oppose new knowledge to existing learner knowledge. In this article, we highlight the usefulness of conflicts in various cooperative learning strategies, showing that they contribute with social interaction to the development of cognition. In particular, we discuss the advantage of an intentional external conflict caused by a difference of opinion between the student and the troublemaker. This difference of opinion is introduced in order to get the student to evaluate his own opinion and cognitive schema. If the learner presents a cognitive dissonance (discord between ideas) a dialogue with the troublemaker will help him correct his internal conflicts. Then, the tutor and the troublemaker cooperate to manage a learning session. Our curriculum is constructed using three kinds of elements: topics, units and links. An area of knowledge can be seen conceptually, or can be organized for a teaching or for a learning purpose. Therefore, the topics of a specific domain can be arranged according to different views using various kinds of link. In our framework, we provide the basic information in a simple collection of XML documents and let the computer generates dynamically a curriculum with its links on the XML resources. Essentially, we use a curriculum to organize an existing set of resources. The models and tools are based on actual data. They aim at allowing the alignment of the continuous training to the business strategic plan. The analysis of empirical data allowed the finding of factors, criteria and weights to be incorporated in a model named ECONOF. This paper first presents this multicriterion model with the software tool related. An example of criteria and subcriteria is presented. The process of finding criteria with their associate weights is explained. Results produced by ECONOF are then presented. The model helps managers to find continuous training activities that fit the priorities and resources set in the strategic plan. Then, we explain why we decided to move towards a mathematical model. The basic mathematical model that was developed from a subset of criteria and subcriteria used and validated with the existing ECONOF multicriterion model is then presented. Most recent architectures of these systems have focussed on the tutor or curriculum components, but with little attention being paid to planning and intelligent collaboration between the different components. In this paper, we propose several improvements by describing a new architecture that involves sophisticated planning processes at different levels of the ITS processing and by decomposing the tutor into two different components, one specialized in the tutorial actions planning and the other tailored for the generation of multimedia presentations. Moreover, the user interface is made more robust and flexible thanks in part to the use of planning techniques. Because Miace takes into account the cognitive psychological laws and the environment in which the student works, it can be used as a virtual student in help systems dedicated to pedagogical formation, in intelligent tutoring systems, in cooperative learning applications and for the conception of didactic material. This paper describes the implementation of Miace and discusses the Miace theoretical components from three point of view: temporal, their roles in cognitive activity and their generic or functional forms. This paper attempts to classify resources according to the educational functions and activities for which they will be used. It also discusses communication patterns, assessment, and evaluation with respect to problem-based learning. It first presents a cognitive basis for learning words, both English and Chinese. Current comprehensive Chinese dictionaries list over 50,000 characters and unabridged English dictionaries contain more than 400,000 entries, but I will show that the number of linguistic symbols a person can actively handle is somewhere between 4,000 and 7,000. Moreover, words are linked or connected to form a mental semantic network.
