The Significance of Integrated English Instruction and Interactive Multimedia English has long been playing an extremely important role in international communication; therefore, learning English as a foreign language is gaining momentum. In Taiwan as any other country where English is used as a foreign language, there are a great number of people, including businessmen and students, striving to have a good command of English. But sad to say, most of the college graduates, after sevenyear learning of English, still cannot use the English language communicatively well, which may result from the fact that the four language skills are taught separately. That is to say, the English teachers and students do not grasp the gist that \"the four language skills are interlocked and interdependent\" (Robinett, 1983, p. 173). According to Murdoch (1986, p. 9), to teach them individually will produce undesirable effects which may prevent students from obtaining communicative abilities to use English in real communicative situations relevant to them. The correlation of the four language skills can be better expounded by Rivers' (1986, p. 10) findings: \"often reading leads to creative production in speech or writing.\"","PeriodicalId":299906,"journal":{"name":"ACM Sigcue Outlook","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123579351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The apprentice-student learns by intensive doing, supported by periodic formal feedback through design critiques, and informal mentoring through peer and instructor interaction. Clearly interactive, synchronous and face-to-face interchanges are the cornerstone of this model of design education.","PeriodicalId":299906,"journal":{"name":"ACM Sigcue Outlook","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130051022","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

And it has been very common for students in translation classes to be handed a long list of text books, all sorts of dictionaries, encyclopedia and other reference books. It is almost impossible for the students to spend a lot of money to buy them all. Besides, the heavy weight of those reference books, the shortage of space for them and the huge amount of time that the students have used to look up for new words in dictionaries or in other reference books have also been big problems for the students. And every now and then they might not be able to find the words in any dictionaries on the market. Problems like these make our students grumble when they do translation. Consequently, translation becomes less interesting.To make translation class full of fun and to make translation more feasible, we think that teachers should introduce the World Wide Web resources for translation to their students. In this paper, we will first introduce different kinds of translation resources on the Web which are very useful for teachers as well as students in Taiwan. We will compile a list of' these resources based on different subjects, such as on-line multi-lingual dictionaries, encyclopedia, jargons of legal, computer, medical, and business terms, rhetorics, corpora, machine translation, translation schools, conferences, workshops, references, and on-line translation services. We will evaluate some of them briefly.","PeriodicalId":299906,"journal":{"name":"ACM Sigcue Outlook","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126298651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When organized in a highly interactive manner, teleconferencing can offer a cost-effective solution to the more traditional methods of educational delivery to rural communities (Parham & Wood, 1985; Passaro, McEvoy, & La tham, 1991; Schaeffer & Schaeffer, 1993). Although it is currently thought that distance learner satisfaction plays a significant role in determining the effectiveness and success of a tele-education course (Biner,1993), very tittle has been done to explore how learnerrelated factors could influence these satisfaction levels.","PeriodicalId":299906,"journal":{"name":"ACM Sigcue Outlook","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126878281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But if we continue applying traditional models of production and teaching to new technical possibilities, we cancel out their potential innovation dimensions and run the risk of bolting classroom-based practices onto a different delivery system. Stevenson (1994) mentions that the science and engineering components of the High Performance Computing and Communications Act (Federal Coordinating, 1993) require an interdisciplinary approach. That means computer professionals must be able to embrace this collaborative effort among many disciplines. Computer professionals have to learn new attitudes. Among them, computer professionals need to learn to share ideas and opinions; in the mean time, they must learn to criticize ideas without criticizing people. As a computer system is developed for and with clients and users, computer professionals have also to learn to ask clarification and help while in the mean time, they have to learn to give justification on conclusions. To favor the learning of these attitudes, the professor Boulet added a cooperative learning-working environment based on Lotus NOtes and thirteen television programmes (documentaries) to the Information Technology undergraduate course.","PeriodicalId":299906,"journal":{"name":"ACM Sigcue Outlook","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127335146","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It arises from the authors' experience of using audio conferencing to teach an introductory course in the social sciences to pre-undergraduate access students throughout the Scottish Highlands and Islands. The paper describes Aberdeen University's distance access programme. The positive features of the programme are that it has made possible the further extension of higher education opportunities to students in remote geographical areas, and that the interactive live audio conferencing tutorials have provided the type of support to students which is missing from traditional correspondence courses. The paper also attempts to determine the attitudes of students to distance learning technologies. It reports the results of a three-year survey conducted among two different groups of students: those who have undertaken the distance learning course, compared with those who have done a similar access course by conventional teaching on campus.","PeriodicalId":299906,"journal":{"name":"ACM Sigcue Outlook","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1998-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130581760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
