The proof tests can be partial or full. The partial tests (e.g. visual inspections, partial stroke testing) are able to detect only some system failures and leave the others latent, whereas the full tests refer to overhauls which restore the system to an as good as new condition. Partial tests may occur at different time instants (periodic or not), up to the full test. The system performances which are investigated are the system availability according to time, the PFD average in each partial test time interval, and the total PFD average calculated on the full test time interval. Following the given expressions, parameter estimations are proposed to assess the system failure rates and the partial test effectiveness according to feedback data from previous test policies. Subsequently, an optimization of the partial test strategy is presented. In the 2oo6 system given as example, an improvement of about 10% of the total PFD average has been obtained, just by a better (non-periodic) distribution of the same number of partial tests, in the full test time interval.","PeriodicalId":299782,"journal":{"name":"2010 Proceedings - Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128081540","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, most reported ANN methods only utilize condition monitoring data from failure histories, and ignore data obtained from suspension histories in which equipments are taken out of service before they fail. Suspension history condition monitoring data contains useful information revealing the degradation of equipment, and will help to achieve more accurate remaining useful life prediction if properly used, particularly when there are very limited failure histories, which is the case in many applications. In this paper, we develop an ANN approach utilizing both failure and suspension condition monitoring histories. The ANN model uses age and condition monitoring data as inputs and the life percentage as output. For each suspension history, the optimal predicted life is determined which can minimize the validation mean square error in the training process using the suspension history and the failure histories. Then the ANN is trained using the failure histories and all the suspension histories with the obtained optimal predicted life values, and the trained ANN can be used for remaining useful life prediction of other equipments. The key idea behind this approach is that the underlying relationship between the inputs and output of ANN is the same for all failure and suspension histories, and thus the optimal life for a suspension history is the one resulting in the lowest ANN validation error. The proposed approach is validated using vibration monitoring data collected from pump bearings in the field.","PeriodicalId":299782,"journal":{"name":"2010 Proceedings - Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117000993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are no standards for CREAM, especially for the analysis of weapon system operation process. This paper presented an improved CREAM based on HAZOP analysis by which the operation steps can be partitioned explicitly, and the causes and the consequences can be evaluated through the deviations analysis. Based on HAZOP analysis, the event-order diagram that described the accident process caused by human error can be acquired. After analyzing the selected event sequence, the root causes of human errors and the probability interval of event sequence can be obtained. An example of diesel engine startup is discussed, which demonstrated the validity of the method for weapon system safety analysis.","PeriodicalId":299782,"journal":{"name":"2010 Proceedings - Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121370305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This not only reduces the cost of testing, but also predicts the physics-of-failures, response of system and quantifies the uncertainty in loading environment. Probabilistic sensitivities may be determined to assess the relative importance of each of the random variables on the probabilistic response. The effectiveness of the proposed approach is illustrated with a probabilistic wear-out model for dry sliding wear in rubber components using structural reliability methods. A time-dependent structural reliability model is adapted to calculate the probability of wear-out. Degradation of material in time is considered by properly accounting for a degradation model in the limit-state function. Relative impact each underlying variable on life is determined.","PeriodicalId":299782,"journal":{"name":"2010 Proceedings - Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"23 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129623660","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The new method is based on a special case of the Fréchet distribution. The special case of the Fréchet distribution is now referred as the “New Distribution” in this article and/or the “Reduce Bias Factor” Distribution. The cumulative distribution function (CDF) of the “New Distribution” is the factor that decreases the bias in distribution parameter estimates to improve data analysis and reliability/lifetime prediction accuracy when using maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) particularly for small sample sizes. The new distribution is very flexible and versatile with two parameters, i.e. Scale and Shape to fit for relevant scenarios. This function support any life distributions such as Weibull, Normal, Log Normal and or others distributions as needed. The new distribution is capable of describing most of the correction factor formulas among them the well known correction factors such as the C4 for Normal and Log Normal Distributions Sigma by William Gossett (Refs. 1, 2, and 3), who was the Chief Brewmaster for the Guinness Breweries. William Gossett also invented the Monte Carlo simulation method for statistical distribution analysis. Dr. Robert B. Abernethy used Monte Carlo later to develop corrections for the Weibull MLE Median and Mean Beta approximately C4^3.5 and C4^6 respectively, see (Refs. 1, 2, and 3). Extensive Monte Carlo simulations and transposed linear regressions by the author provide the basis for the conclusions in this paper. The results herein apply to complete samples starting from, but not limited to, Beta values of 0.5 up to Beta value of 10 with 1200 sets of samples of 2 up to 300. The author is using the new method to reduce the MLE bias with censored data, never the less the author does encourage additional research into censored data.","PeriodicalId":299782,"journal":{"name":"2010 Proceedings - Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125989543","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This is especially important for offshore wind parks as maintenance is challenging. Approaches are necessary to fulfill these requests for less failures and higer reliability without cost explosion. The earlier in the product development process reliability and risk assessment is performed, the easier and cheaper is a design improvement. Therefore, it is important to include risk assessment already in research and predevelopment projects. For a good risk assessment structured methods are necessary. Failure Mode and Effect Analysis (FMEA) and Design Review Based on Failure Mode (DRBFM) are discussed, experiences are shared, and adapations are shown how FMEA and DRBFM can be a used in a creative and structured way in research projects.","PeriodicalId":299782,"journal":{"name":"2010 Proceedings - Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128066627","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The problem formulation considers the generic case of warm-standby redundancy and extends state-of-the-art reliability optimization techniques in several dimensions: (1) non-constant component hazard functions, (2) warm standby components including cold and hot standby situations, (3) imperfect switches, (4) k-out-of-n redundancy structures, (5) multiple component choices, and (6) redundancy strategy choices. The problem involves selection of components, redundancy strategies, and redundancy levels to maximize system reliability subject to constraints. Optimal solutions are determined based on an equivalent binary integer programming formulation. Compared to other available methods, the proposed methodology more accurately models many engineering design problems with both active and standby redundancies. Previously, it has been difficult to determine optimal solutions for this class of problems or to calculate system reliability efficiently. The methodology is successfully demonstrated on a large problem with 14 subsystems with arbitrary failure distributions.","PeriodicalId":299782,"journal":{"name":"2010 Proceedings - Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133292035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These systems are able to adapt their objectives and their behavior according to the current situation and influences autonomously. This behavior adaptation is non-deterministic and hence self-optimization is a risk to the system, e.g. if the result of the self-optimization process does not match the suddenly changed situation. In contrary, self-optimization could be used to increase the dependability by pursuing objectives like reliability and availability. In our preceding publications we introduced the so called multi-level dependability concept to cope with this new kind of systems (cf. [6]). This concept comprises the monitoring of the system behavior, the classification of the current situation, and the selection of the appropriate measure, if reliability limits are exceeded. In this paper we present for the first time experimental results. The dependability concept is implemented in the self-optimizing active guidance system of a railway vehicle. The test drives illustrate clearly that the proposed concept is able to cope with, e.g., sensor failures, and is able to increase the reliability and availability of the active guidance module.","PeriodicalId":299782,"journal":{"name":"2010 Proceedings - Annual Reliability and Maintainability Symposium (RAMS)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131739190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
