Leurs parents ont dû choisir un correspondant qui habitait près del’école. Le correspondant devait assurer le paiement des frais de l’école, subvenir aux besoins de l’élève, et surveiller des sorties occasionnelles. Cet article examine les relations entre les correspondants et les boursiers sénégalais, et les réseaux transatlantiques qu’elles ont produits. Il se concentre surtout sur l’histoire d’un boursier qui s’appelait Durand Armstrong, dont le père était en communication fréquent avec son correspondant. L’article prétend que les relations entre boursiers et correspondants ont compliqué les fractures sociales de la colonie. Ces élèves étaient donc des intermédiaires, qui, grâce à leurs réseaux, leur éducation, et leur mobilité, ont pu remettre en cause les catégories sociales coloniales.","PeriodicalId":29880,"journal":{"name":"French Colonial History","volume":"15 1","pages":"39 - 66"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2014-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.14321/FRENCOLOHIST.15.2014.0039","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66945701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En conséquence, les historiens des empires européens considèrent de plus en plus les pays colonisateurs et leurs colonies du point de vue d’un “single analytic field” ou “champ analytique commun.” Cette tendance représente un véritable tournant historiographique. Toutefois, ce virage historiographique important est problématique dans la mesure où il exclut toute tentative de maintenir la métropole et la colonie comme véritables objets de recherche. Le cas des relations entre la Belgique et le Congo belge pendant l’époque coloniale met en évidence la nécessité d’utiliser ce champ analytique commun avec prudence du fait des distances existant entre métropole et colonie.Les autorités coloniales belges ont imposé avec beaucoup de succès des contrôles sur la circulation des personnes et des idées dans le contexte colonial. En analysant le cas de la Belgique et de sa colonie, cet article démontre la nécessité de prêter attention aux situations nuancées qui caractérisent l’histoire des empires européens.","PeriodicalId":29880,"journal":{"name":"French Colonial History","volume":"15 1","pages":"109 - 87"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2014-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.14321/FRENCOLOHIST.15.2014.0087","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66945780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

En revoyant les débats relatif à la nationalité et l’Algérie pendant le dix-neuvième siècle, cet article examine l’origine du multiculturalisme pathologique français en rapport avec la politique du Royaume Arabe. Il affirme que les débats sur la « question algérienne » sous le Second Empire déterminaient considérablement les conceptions de la nationalité et la modernité en France. En dépit de l’intention du Royaume Arabe d’établir une place pour les musulmans dans la nation française, il a confirmé en fin de compte les distinctions entre les ressortissants français et a sapé le but de réaliser une communauté cosmopolite française. Malgré cet échec les années du Second Empire constituait une époque dans laquelle les imaginaires nationaux parallèles ont émergé dans la politique française, mettant en lumière les possibilités alternatives à la nationalité républicaine française et le communauratisme républicain qui persiste au present.","PeriodicalId":29880,"journal":{"name":"French Colonial History","volume":"15 1","pages":"1 - 37"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2014-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.14321/FRENCOLOHIST.15.2014.0001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66946172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Les rouages de l’alternance saisonnière entre agriculture et orpaillage dans la vie sociale de cette région ouest-africaine y sont décrits. L’on analyse ainsi les valeurs sociales et les dynamiques de mobilité imbriquées dans ces activités, avant d’interroger les valeurs et les choix des administrateurs coloniaux qui furent à l’origine de ces politiques économiques. En particulier, les auteurs tâchent à montrer d’une part le décalage d’attribution de valeur entre agriculture et orpaillage au sein des politiques économiques coloniales. D’autre part, ils montrent les démarches de restriction de la mobilité interne par l’administration française dans le but d’assurer les nouvelles mesures des politiques agricoles et minières. Tout en se greffant les politiques minières sur l’organisation sociale préexistante des placers, celles-ci enclenchèrent de représentations inédites d’autochtonie et d’appartenance dans le but d’accroître la production et d’imposer des taxes d’exploitation des placers.","PeriodicalId":29880,"journal":{"name":"French Colonial History","volume":"15 1","pages":"67 - 86"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2014-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.14321/FRENCOLOHIST.15.2014.0067","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66945760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An alleged slave named Furcy contested his supposed legal condition of servitude and was defended by the colonial government’s attorney general and seconded by an obscure Creole attorney, Sully Brunet, even though most of the island’s free residents opposed the case. How did Brunet recognize the judicial irregularities in Furcy’s trial? What were his relations with his superiors? What was Brunet’s role in this affair? This painful episode in the history of La Réunion raises many questions and left a deep impression on Sully Brunet. This case reveals the particular interpretation of civil authority in the context of slavery. It also had serious consequences for the island. The colony tried to adapt to the incessant changes in legislation and sought to regain stability lost after the British captured the island in 1810. The role of Sully Brunet in this case reveals much about the colonial judicial system, the struggles for political influence, and the divisions between Creole and European-born residents in the context of the institution of slavery. Sully Brunet, a willing participant and an unfortunate hero, deserves serious attention.","PeriodicalId":29880,"journal":{"name":"French Colonial History","volume":"15 1","pages":"135 - 163"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2014-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.14321/FRENCOLOHIST.15.2014.0135","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66945959","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The creation of this ministry had been delayed for a long time due to the existence of an undersecretary for Colonial Affairs. The project of determining the duties and limits of a new ministry covering colonial issues in their entirety became a constitutional necessity in the early 1890s. Despite hesitations in the Senate, the parliamentary deputies of the “parti colonial” under the leadership of Eugène Etienne, the “pope of the colonialists,” organized themselves to create this indispensible ministry. However, the Ministry of Colonies appeared to be a “rump ministry” in its early years, due to the heavy influence of the “parti colonial” and the lack of a definitive settlement of the structure and role of the colonial army.","PeriodicalId":29880,"journal":{"name":"French Colonial History","volume":"38 1","pages":"33 - 54"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2013-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/FCH.2013.0001","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66341526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many women who enlisted in the French armed forces after 1940 joined the French Far Eastern Expedition Corps and served well beyond Europe. In 1954, the French-Vietnam war ended in a double loss for French soldiers—a personal as well as a military defeat. With more women serving in and with the military after World War II, women’s memories of military service also included the testimony of veterans of the war in Indochina. Many of these women recalled their personal war experiences, sometimes immediately afterward, sometimes many years after the conflict. These memories of women at war are a previously unexplored set of sources of historical memories of the French-Vietnam war, which up to now have been produced mainly, if not exclusively, by men. This study thus shows how feminine authors in the French military expressed their views, between memories of war and travel accounts.","PeriodicalId":29880,"journal":{"name":"French Colonial History","volume":"14 1","pages":"115 - 132"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2013-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/FCH.2013.0005","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66341569","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Authors such as Mauritius-born Charles Baissac established explanations about the emergence of Creole languages and their specific structure, arguing that these particularities can only be seen as a result of contact between two races of different physical, mental, and social predispositions. As shown in Edward Said’s “Orientalism,” scientific work in philology (and other disciplines) cannot be separated from structures of power and domination. Creole languages formed an urgent problem for colonial France as they initially emerged from the prestigious French language and yet had to be integrated into the paradigm of inferiority of colonized peoples and cultures. Linguistic descriptions of Creoles are therefore marked with a strong effort to reconcile the French heritage of these languages with the claim of domination over the community of Creole speakers. Still, contradictions and nuances in the texts of late-nineteenth-century research on Creole languages, carried out often by native speakers who had grown up in the colonies, may help to identify statements that transport an individual view of the triangular relation between language, race, and mind. Even in its not quite institutionalized state as a discipline, early creolistics displays a remarkable degree of cross-national connections that demonstrate how difficult it is to classify philological branches along national affiliation.","PeriodicalId":29880,"journal":{"name":"French Colonial History","volume":"14 1","pages":"55 - 69"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2013-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/FCH.2013.0002","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66341071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

His studies dealt with the problem of the origins of the “modern” form of colonialism in the second half of the nineteenth century, besides Ancien Régime French colonization. He saw the roots of “modern” European colonial rule in the activities of Dupleix and Bussy in eighteenth-century India. By underscoring the importance of both French officers, Martineau noticed important differences in the colonial activities of the two. According to Martineau, while Dupleix supported the idea of direct military conquest, Bussy favored a method of “indirect” colonization that was in some way the harbinger of the nineteenth-century model of protectorates. Yet in the light of the sources at our disposal today, the differences in the action of the two French colonizers are much less marked than in the frame depicted by Martineau. Both Dupleix and Bussy, in fact, used both coercion and more conciliatory policies toward indigenous India rulers. Dupleix and Bussy welded the usual economic and trade interests to the necessities of governance, in a similar way to French protectorates in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.","PeriodicalId":29880,"journal":{"name":"French Colonial History","volume":"14 1","pages":"71 - 87"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2013-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/FCH.2013.0003","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66341078","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This period was marked by the reshaping of architecture’s role in the colony’s politics and by the evolution in architectural practices that anticipated, to a certain extent, postcolonial times. This article explains these transformations by considering two factors: first, the growing strength and diversity of private architects, among whom emerged the first generation of Vietnamese architects trained at the Indochinese School of Fine Art; and second, the particular way which the Vichyite government of Admiral Decoux (1884–1963) then facing a difficult situation, used architecture both to restore French prestige and to increase nationalism among the colonized.","PeriodicalId":29880,"journal":{"name":"French Colonial History","volume":"14 1","pages":"113 - 89"},"PeriodicalIF":0.2,"publicationDate":"2013-05-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.1353/FCH.2013.0004","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"66341547","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
