Elliott and David A. deSilva have demonstrated the value of reading Paul’s positive utterances on the topic of Christian suffering (e.g., Phil 1:29) as embedded in an honor discourse. In his letters, Paul uses the rhetoric of “divine reversal,” in which the shame of Christians—their suffering as victims of discrimination—is transformed into the opposite: honor. Continuing in this direction, this article examines Paul’s honor discourse in Rom 8:12–39, where much of the suffering does not seem to occur “for Christ’s sake.” It argues that experiences of suffering in Romans 8 are linked to notions of mortality and sin and therefore not characterized as honorable. Comparing Romans 8 to Paul’s honor discourse in Philippians leads the author to conclude that Paul’s positive evaluation of the harsh reality of suffering does not apply to all kinds of suffering. Moreover, this article argues that we need to find more nuanced ways to speak about Paul’s positive stance on Christian suffering.","PeriodicalId":29841,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Paul and His Letters","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49206850","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The present article gives evidence to the contrary. First, it outlines a methodology based on the transmission models of Dunn and Bauckham. The bulk of the article then applies that method to three passages in 1 Corinthians in which Paul cites JT (1 Cor 7:10–11; 9:14; 11:23–25). These exegetical observations are summarized by identifying a pattern of nine features of the way Paul uses JT in 1 Corinthians. The article concludes that, given his audience and purpose in 1 Corinthians, Paul uses JT legitimately.","PeriodicalId":29841,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Paul and His Letters","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46554981","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

G. Barclay and Simon J. Gathercole, has renewed scholarly attention to questions about agency. In connection with these recent developments in Pauline studies, this article argues, first, that the concept of “agency” remains unperfected among biblical scholars. Second, we engage with the action theories of G. E. M. Anscombe and Donald Davidson. Here we propose that their focus on two concepts—intention and reasons for actions—will contribute to critical analyses of agency as expressed in biblical texts. Third, we bring analytic philosophy into conversation with Troels Engberg-Pedersen’s I-X-S model and J. Louis Martyn’s agent-centered perspective. Fourth, we apply our theoretical model of agency to biblical exegesis by interacting with a selected Pauline text, Rom 7:7–25.","PeriodicalId":29841,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Paul and His Letters","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43043895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Galatians appears to lack some elements in other literature, including Pauline letters (esp. Romans), that cue one to read justification’s conceptual backdrop as a legal-theological one of forgiveness or divine approbation in view of one’s sin. More dominant are images of conflict between God and inimical powers. Some have thus argued that the soteriology of Galatians is incompatible with legal readings of justification, seeing instead a battle between God and cosmic powers replacing a divine courtroom. Building on recent research, this article argues first that the legal conceptualization of justification is itself one of conflict in Jewish and Pauline contexts. Second, it sketches the place of humans, “anti-God powers,” and the redemptive act within the conflict as portrayed in Galatians. It concludes that the legal and conflict images are complementary and that the latter offers a framework in which the former is implied.","PeriodicalId":29841,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Paul and His Letters","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48857080","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Wengst’s proposal avoids all the interpretive difficulties and incoherence of the traditional reading of 9:6b, which sees an “Israel” within Israel. Wengst’s reading transfers 9:6b from the supersessionist side to the post-supersessionist side of the debate, with significant implications for the interpretation of Romans and Paul’s theology of Israel and the gentiles. Yet Wengst’s reading has remained virtually unknown within the English-speaking theological community. The purpose of this essay is to make Wengst’s reading better known by presenting a summary of Wengst’s reading, adducing additional supporting arguments, and proposing a fresh post-supersessionist translation of the key verses 9:6–8.","PeriodicalId":29841,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Paul and His Letters","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48188761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Longenecker has proposed a new but influential interpretation of Paul’s command to “do good to all” in his recent book, Remember the Poor. Contrary to standard readings of this passage, Longenecker suggests that Paul intends the Galatians to understand it as a command to serve the poor through financial assistance. To support that thesis, he resources past scholarship that claims “to do the good” in the Greco-Roman context, especially the honorifics and proxeny decrees, referenced material and even financial services. By suggesting such phrasing was “technical terminology for such services,” Longenecker is able significantly to bolster the plausibility of his reading. To test that thesis, this article gives a brief survey of recent discussions on Greco-Roman benefaction and looks closely at several important honorific decrees. The findings suggest that Longenecker’s conclusions are less than certain. Although “to do the good” may be used in reference to material benefits, the phrase was used in a variety of circumstances, often honoring benefactors who rendered immaterial beneficence to the city, such as military service and favorable auguries. Additionally, inscriptions commemorating material benefits often lack the phrase. This article finds that the phrase “to do the good” is a flexible phrase in the inscriptions that suggests service in general rather than a particular kind of service. Therefore, Longenecker’s proposed interpretation is found to lack important external evidence and thus to be dissatisfactory.","PeriodicalId":29841,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Paul and His Letters","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44839650","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first intends to review critically one of the main tenets of Peter-Ben Smit’s contribution by asking exactly how fluid and discursive the construction of gender in the Pastoral Epistles was. The second question is whether hegemonic performance of masculinity is the best explanation for the manner of expressing authority in the Pastorals. As a mostly additional yet partly challenging perspective, a related interpretive frame is introduced: philosophical imitation in virtue. As authority is expressed in terms of imitation in virtuous living, it can be better understood as a form of, in Smit’s vocabulary, “subhegemonic” masculinity: a critical rephrasing of the cultural hegemonic norm in terms of self-control that enables participation of “every body,” male and female. Crucial to this philosophical ideal of masculinity is control over one’s self (sōphrosunē) instead of the hegemonic ideal of control over the world outside. In addition to this virtue, it will be argued that in all three Pastoral Epistles the virtue of pistis, “trust” or “faithfulness,” functions to create a reciprocal, inclusive, and divinely modelled network of imitation. Rather than supporting the author’s masculine self-presentation, as Smit holds, pistis functions to balance hegemonically gendered power play.","PeriodicalId":29841,"journal":{"name":"Journal for the Study of Paul and His Letters","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"70856414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
