To select a suitable device with remarkable surface sensitivity is very important for the efficiently research. In this paper, two-port and high Q-value SAW resonators were adopted. The phase noise has been studied from the point of view of stochastic process resulting from gas molecular adsorption and desorption. Experimental results have shown that some organic vapors can reduce the flicker noise (1/f) and random walk(1/f/sup 2/) noise. Analysis has been made that these effects are not from the e-value increment, but from the changing of dynamic rate of adsorption and desorption. Research on gas motion above the device substrate might explain some phenomenon difficulty explained by the model based only upon substrate itself.","PeriodicalId":294110,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE/EIA International Frequency Control Symposium and Exhibition (Cat. At the first stage, weighting functions for input and output FIDTs are chosen, according to which initial electrode structures are formed. At the main stage a more precise tuning of electrode polarity arrangement is performed to meet filter frequency response specifications in the best way. SAW filters with bandwidth of 2-50% and out-of-band rejection of 47-60 dB have been designed with using the described algorithm.","PeriodicalId":294110,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE/EIA International Frequency Control Symposium and Exhibition (Cat. {"title":"Design, manufacturing, and characterization of high-frequency thickness-shear mode resonators","authors":"J. Rabe, S. Buttgenbach, B. Zimmermann, P. Hauptmann","doi":"10.1109/FREQ.2000.887338","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/FREQ.2000.887338","url":null,"abstract":"AT-cut quartz crystals vibrating in the thickness-shear mode are well known as mass sensitive devices. After deposition of a sensitive layer on one or both surfaces of the quartz discs these resonators are suitable for the application as chemical sensors for analysis in gaseous and liquid media, which are known as quartz crystal microbalances (QCM). Up to now the resonant frequencies of these resonators are 5 to 30 MHz. The application of combined photolithographic and etching processes offers new promising approaches for the manufacturing of quartz resonators with higher resonant frequencies, up to 75 MHz, and smaller diameters. Resonators were fabricated and subsequently characterized optically and mechanically by means of light microscopy, SEM, and surface profiling and electrically by means of impedance analysis. The etched surfaces are very smooth and parallel, leading to high Q-factors up to 5/spl middot/10/sup 4/, which is excellent for high frequency resonators. A high mechanical stability due to the 128 /spl mu/m thick quartz frame was proofed. The influences of surface roughness and etch channels on the resonators' performance were examined. The behaviour under acoustic load was investigated experimentally. The results showed that 50 MHz resonators operated in water reach zero phase of impedance. In liquid media, changes in the viscosity (/spl eta//sub L/) and density (/spl rho//sub L/) lead to a decrease of the resonant frequency (/spl Delta/f) of the QCM. A linear relationship between (/spl eta//sub L//spl rho//sub L/)/sup 1/2/ and /spl Delta/f was observed, in agreement with theory, while the frequency shifts are much higher than reported before.","PeriodicalId":294110,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE/EIA International Frequency Control Symposium and Exhibition (Cat. {"title":"Cryo-cooled sapphire oscillator operating above 35 K","authors":"G. Dick, R.T. Developed a few years ago, the \"77 K CSO\" resonator showed a quality factor Q=2/spl times/10/sup 6/ at an operating temperature of 85 K, enabling a frequency stability of /spl delta/f/f<1/spl times/10/sup -13/. The new design promises a frequency stability of parts in 10/sup 15/ with cooling provided by a cryocooler consuming several hundred watts or less. Optimization of the resonator design for a temperature of 40 K results in a mechanical tuning rate requirement (MHz/micron) reduced by a factor of 8, allowing for reduced EM fields at the surface of the sapphire and reduced sensitivity to mechanical deformation. This optimized EM design is implemented in a self-assembling mechanical design that allows easy disassembly for cleaning, together with a first-order cancellation for expected mechanisms of physical creep. The new design is expected to share the very short thermal time constants characteristic of the 10 K and 77 K CSO resonators, thus allowing effective compensation of rapid temperature fluctuations.","PeriodicalId":294110,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE/EIA International Frequency Control Symposium and Exhibition (Cat. In this model, the surface acoustic load acting at the interface between the acoustic device and the adjacent medium plays the dominant role and reflects changes in mass, density, or film thickness of a coating (gravimetric effects) as well as (visco-)elastic properties of the material (non-gravimetric effects). One important requirement of the transmission-line model is the continuity of particle displacement and stress at the interface. This has the disadvantage that it cannot allow for the existence of slip. This contribution introduces a new concept for the treatment of slip between an acoustic wave device and a contacting solid film or a contacting liquid. In this concept slip modifies the acoustic load acting at the surface of the sensor.","PeriodicalId":294110,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE/EIA International Frequency Control Symposium and Exhibition (Cat. This paper deals with experimental verification of the theory. Two cases of a harmonic ratio, 1:2 and 1:3, are investigated. The RF model used incorporates a transistor one-pole negative conductance active device loaded on a LC-filter with two multiple resonant frequencies. Both harmonic ratios provide easy and reproducible tuning at the compensation regime. The most remarkable demonstration of the discussed phenomenon takes place when the oscillator is overcompensated, as in this situation an oscillation frequency grows while a capacitor shunting the active device output is being increased. Frequency stability gain in excess of 40 dB in a rather wide range of parameters is registered in some tests.","PeriodicalId":294110,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 2000 IEEE/EIA International Frequency Control Symposium and Exhibition (Cat.
