Nationalist now challenges this model in the US, the UK, and several other European countries. The challenges reflect discontent with the last years of economic underachievement, fears of immigration and terrorism in Europe and on the Mexican border, and a wide spread fear of the \"hollowing out\" of the middle and working classes due to unfair Chinese exports.

But the concerns are greater than they need to be. Things are turning around, and recovery has set in. Globalization is thought to be the most effect way, over time, to generate global peace and prosperity, and to generate economy opportunity through competition. It is well supported by a deep infrastructure of supporting institutions in the governmental, commercial and financial sectors.

But populism has set in and has attracted a lot of voter interest in shaking things up. Itr is essentially a challenge to the \"elites\" and therefore we will have tp wait for the political process to to return to the center, but globalization will survive in the end.","PeriodicalId":288317,"journal":{"name":"International Political Economy: Globalization eJournal","volume":"63 21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116843979","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

During the day time or when the workplaces are filled with workers and employees it becomes difficult to identify who the thief is, which is why an automated system that automatically identifies the action based on modern motion detection technology using cameras and also identifies and highlights the missing object thereby notifying the administrator. System is used to keep a watch for any suspicious activity especially after closing hours when it becomes difficult to manage the entire area physically. {"title":"Risk-Mitigating Technologies: The Case of Radiation Diagnostic Devices","authors":"Alberto Galasso, Hong Luo","doi":"10.2139/ssrn.3456286","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2139/ssrn.3456286","url":null,"abstract":"We study the impact of consumers’ risk perception on firm innovation. Our analysis exploits a major surge in the perceived risk of radiation diagnostic devices following extensive media coverage of a set of overradiation accidents involving computed tomography (CT) scanners in late 2009. Using data on radiation diagnostic device patents and Food and Drug Administration (FDA) product clearances, we find that the increased perception of radiation risk spurred the development of new technologies that mitigated such risk and led to a greater number of new products. Using CT scanners as a case study, we provide an in-depth characterization of two different types of risk-mitigating technologies that firms developed after the shock. Firm-level analysis shows that, although firms were similarly responsive in their patenting activities, large incumbents were significantly more responsive than smaller firms in terms of new product introductions, and, in the case of CT scanners, large incumbents were also significantly more responsive in terms of the more radical type of risk-mitigating technologies. We also provide qualitative evidence and describe patterns of equipment usage and upgrade that are consistent with increased risk perception and, consequently, a greater willingness to pay for safety. Overall, our findings suggest that changes in risk perception can be an important driver of innovation, can shape the direction of technological progress, and can impact market structure. This paper was accepted by Ashish Arora, entrepreneurship and innovation.","PeriodicalId":288317,"journal":{"name":"International Political Economy: Globalization eJournal","volume":"337 8","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-04-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132418171","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the uneven availability and adoption of broadband, these inadequacies are important to consider because government policy and regulation, industry and business strategies, and scholarly research can be impacted by inaccurate or distorted data. Provided that conversations about the problems and prospects of mapping and measuring the Internet feed into continuing discussions of policy initiatives to improve these data, this article sets out to critically review publicly available data, identify important limitations of these data, and profile research that have used these data successfully. In this review, the dynamic nature of broadband data will be discussed and the tradeoffs of pursuing further investments to create better databases evaluated. This evaluation suggests a more fruitful research path would be to recognize and work around existing data drawbacks, using the studies profiled in this paper, to explore a multitude of topics related to broadband availability, adoption and use.","PeriodicalId":288317,"journal":{"name":"International Political Economy: Globalization eJournal","volume":"231 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134265163","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The values of innovation, business sophistication and technological readiness factors of competitiveness between Moldova and South- Eastern Europe countries are analyzed in the paper. The study identified that the Republic of Moldova and Serbia recorded low indicators of the innovation and sophistication competitiveness in comparison with other countries of Southeast Europe. At the same time economy of Moldova follows the EU economies on the technological readiness, overcoming the Albanian and Serbian economy in the last years. The study showed that the need to raise the competitiveness by attracting foreign direct investments into research and development, information communication technologies as well as the high-value manufacturing and tradable sectors and by fully and efficiently implementing public institution reform, has become not only important but also urgent because the country is to be capable to strengthen the economic benefits that many countries have reached in past years. The results of study can be used in process of implementation of public administration reform, the elaboration of the National Program of science and innovation of the Republic of Moldova, the improving of governance the research and development in country.","PeriodicalId":288317,"journal":{"name":"International Political Economy: Globalization eJournal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127186220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

AI, as a technology platform, can automate tasks previously performed by labour or create new tasks and activities in which humans can be productively employed. Recent technological change has been biased towards automation, with insufficient focus on creating new tasks where labour can be productively employed. The consequences of this choice have been stagnating labour demand, declining labour share in national income, rising inequality and lowering productivity growth. The current tendency is to develop AI in the direction of further automation, but this might mean missing out on the promise of the ‘right’ kind of AI, with better economic and social outcomes.","PeriodicalId":288317,"journal":{"name":"International Political Economy: Globalization eJournal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-03-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130164142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Trinidad and Tobago (T&T), a less well-known case in the steel sector, illustrates in contrast to mainstream assumptions, that formal market-supporting institutions, such as property rights and the rule of law do not explain its industrial performance. It suggests the interplay of interrelated forces at the domestic and international levels, namely acquisition of state-of-the-art technologies, and an international commodity boom coupled with collective organizational skills and mobilizations of social actors that together propelled state-led industrialization. Employing historical data, the paper explains the rise and decline of steel manufacturing from the period of state-led industrialization underpinned by a specific STP configuration that generated increasingly complex skills, products and new employment. The fall of global demand and protectionism in the United States prompted its privatization and undermined indigenous capability.","PeriodicalId":288317,"journal":{"name":"International Political Economy: Globalization eJournal","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130782125","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
