General education courses, encompassing all majors and grades, form the cornerstone of undergraduate education in engineering universities. Especially amidst the current evolution of undergraduate education and talent cultivation within engineering universities, under the new circumstances arising from initiatives such as the plan for nurturing outstanding engineers, the establishment of new engineering disciplines, and the implementation of enrollment and undergraduate course development, the teaching of large-category general education courses assumes a pivotal role. It contributes significantly to advancing academic disciplines and majors, fostering the scientific literacy of undergraduates, nurturing a spirit of inquiry, and enhancing their ability to make informed decisions regarding majors and careers. This paper delves into the fundamental purpose and significance of teaching general education courses in engineering universities under these new circumstances, focusing on the typical challenges encountered in the teaching process. Subsequently, the authors utilize the teaching of a large-category general education course, namely “Introduction to Nanomaterials and Their Development Frontiers,” as a platform for pedagogical reform. They propose a novel “target-seeking style“ teaching approach for general education courses within broader categories and explore innovative teaching methodologies aimed at addressing the common challenges associated with these courses. Ultimately, the aim is to cultivate a balanced blend of specialization and generalization among undergraduate students, thereby addressing the common issues encountered in general education teaching and realizing the overarching goal of fostering high-quality technical talents with a well-rounded skill set at the undergraduate level.","PeriodicalId":288252,"journal":{"name":"Education Reform and Development","volume":"79 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140423755","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The image of the heroine, Dabu, embodies the indomitable pursuit of happiness and the sacrificial spirit of dedication among the Zhuang people, showcasing the unique charm of Chinese traditional folk culture. In the context of the new era, the dissemination and development of Dabu’s image present both opportunities and challenges. Therefore, it is necessary to follow current trends, adhere to the themes and aesthetics of the times, seek ways to highlight Dabu’s character traits and cultural expression, and seize the opportunity to integrate modern elements and culture to promote the exemplary image of Zhuang women.","PeriodicalId":288252,"journal":{"name":"Education Reform and Development","volume":"77 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140423969","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both literary works are contextualized in the North American rural community, and their main characters are girls in their early adolescence who have tenacious personality traits. The rural communities where these works are set, far from being an intimidating motif, make these protagonists show their determination to overcome what might be expected from them in these settings. Both sociohistorical contexts create rural micro-bubbles that, as it is studied, are composed of the family, the school, or the neighborhood. Furthermore, some other common themes are observed in both works such as children’s work, or nature’s personification. It does not seem to be a coincidence that Mills illustrated one of the editions of Anne of the Green Gables in 1989. However, the studies that have put both works in connection are practically non-existent. Thus, this paper tries to approach both authors and the possible autobiographical features in their works. Later, it inquires into some coincidences between both female protagonists as well as into the importance that family, neighbors, school, and nature acquire in the rural contexts where they are set.","PeriodicalId":288252,"journal":{"name":"Education Reform and Development","volume":"31 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140427197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This approach places a strong emphasis on the advantages of homogenous grouping in the teaching process. Its main objective is to assist students in acquiring fundamental skills, including knowledge of the alphabet, letter sounds, reading of consonant-vowel-consonant (CVC) pattern words, numerical comprehension, handwriting of names, and following simple directions. This study delved into the implementation of the Project AKAY approach for Grade 4 students attending Marawoy Elementary School in Lipa City during the 2022–2023 academic year. The researcher aimed to assess the reading proficiency of these students using the Philippine Informal Reading Inventory (PHIL-IRI) assessment both before and after the implementation of the approach. The study also examined the extent to which the Project AKAY approach was utilized to guide students in acquiring these essential skills. Additionally, the research explored the challenges faced by teachers in implementing the Project AKAY approach and their strategies for overcoming these challenges. The study employed a descriptive quantitative research design and employed purposive sampling as the chosen sampling technique. Data collection relied on the PHIL-IRI assessment tool and interviews as research instruments. The collected data underwent thorough analysis, including statistical treatments such as frequency and percentage calculations. In the context of 21st-century learning, there is a growing demand for students to establish a solid foundation in this skill during their early developmental stages. Despite the recognized importance of phonemic awareness, there have been instances of low achievement in this area. This study aimed to assess the impact of incorporating play-based activities on improving phonemic awareness in kindergarten learners. The variables examined within phonemic awareness include letter sound fluency, blending, and segmenting. The study employed a quasi-experimental research design and utilized purposive sampling. A total of 20 kindergarten learners from Tangway Loob Elementary School participated in the study. The primary instruments for data collection were pre-tests and post-tests. The findings revealed that, before the implementation of play-based activities, kindergarten learners had a mean phonemic awareness score of 42.58, interpreting a moderate level of awareness. After the intervention, the learners attained a mean of 56.53, also interpreted as a moderate level of awareness. The analysis revealed a significant improvement in letter sound fluency and blending skills between the pre-test and post-test assessments. However, no significant difference was observed in terms of segmenting. In conclusion, this study demonstrated the effectiveness of incorporating play-based activities in enhancing the phonemic awareness of kindergarten learners. It is recommended that these activities be integrated into instructional practices to further develop phonemic skills, which serve as a crucial foundation for more advanced literacy skills.","PeriodicalId":288252,"journal":{"name":"Education Reform and Development","volume":"15 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135678829","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
