The four face recognition methods include three classical methods, PCA, LDA and EBGM (elastic bunch graph matching), and one new method, FPB (face pattern byte). The FPB method actually extracts orientational facial features by Gabor wavelet transform and uses Hamming distance for face identification. When the multispectral images from the same subject are available, the identification accuracy and reliability can be significantly enhanced using score fusion. Four score fusion methods, mean fusion, LDA fusion, KNN (k-nearest neighbor) fusion, and HMM (hidden Markov model) fusion are implemented and compared. Our experiments are conducted with the ASUMS face database that currently consists of two-band images (visible and thermal) from 96 subjects. We compare the identification performance of applying the four recognition methods to the two-band face images, and compare the fusion performance of combing the multiple scores from different methods (matcher) and from different bands (modality) of face images. The experimental results show that the face identification rate can achieve 100% when fusing two FPB scores from two-band face images; overall, the FPB method performs the best; the score modality is a key factor in biometric score fusion; when the number of score modalities is fixed, the fusion method becomes next important factor to score fusion; and the HMM fusion is the most reliable score fusion method.","PeriodicalId":288042,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology (ISSPIT)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115092897","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In an RFID system, the anti-collision algorithm is one of the primary mechanisms to address the issue of multi-object identification. This paper focused on a detailed study of the ALOHA anti-collision problem and a comparative study with the basic binary tree protocols. Two tag estimation methods were investigated and a performance analysis was successfully achieved based on various key design parameters such as the probability of a successful transmission, the collision ratio, the offered load, the system efficiency, the system throughput and the estimation accuracy of successful transmission.","PeriodicalId":288042,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology (ISSPIT)","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134090960","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Large volumes of data are being generated and there is a growing demand for automatic analysis tools. This paper introduces two automatic analysis methods, based on exponential weighted moving average (EWMA) control charts. These two methods can identify changes in the trend of consumption during specific periods of the day, and changes in consumption relative to a mathematical model. The abnormal consumption events identified by these methods are in accordance with the events identified by expert energy analysts.","PeriodicalId":288042,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology (ISSPIT)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132753690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Clinicians have become increasingly aware of the link between fetal activity and its well-being. Using data acquired by accelerometry sensors, we use TFDs such as the spectrogram and modified B distribution (MBD) to characterize fetal movements in the time-frequency (TF) domain. This paper reports a fetal activity detection method based on the root-mean-square (RMS) of time series and evaluates its performance against real-time ultrasound imaging, taken as the gold standard. The evaluation showed better performance with the RMS-based detector as compared to maternal perception. The evaluation also showed that the detector performance is age-dependent and that fetal movement is characterized by different TF morphology. Time-frequency distributions (TFDs) with better resolution such as MBD are investigated for TF-based techniques for the detection of fetal movements.","PeriodicalId":288042,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology (ISSPIT)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133658122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is shown that this strategy locally minimizes a problem whose objective function falls into the class of the ℓp-norm and represents an efficient approximation of the intractable problem focusing on the ℓ0-norm. Numerical experiments on randomly generated signals using classical stochastic models show better performances of the proposed technique with respect to a wide collection of well known algorithms for sparse representation.","PeriodicalId":288042,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology (ISSPIT)","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133448190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sub-band energy of high frequencies is estimated based on HMM according to the low-frequency features of audio signals. The smoothness of energy transition for the extended audio signals can be improved in time domain and frequency domain. In addition, the fine information of high-frequency components is recovered to guarantee the timbre of the extended audio by nonlinear prediction based on the nearest-neighbor matching. The objective and subjective test results indicate that the proposed method outperforms the conventional methods including blind bandwidth extension and nonlinear extensions.","PeriodicalId":288042,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology (ISSPIT)","volume":"151 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116533964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, a fingerprinting based localization technique using neural networks and ultra-wideband signals (UWB) is presented as an alternative. The fingerprinting database is built with signatures extracted from channel impulse responses (CIR) obtained by processing an IR-UWB indoor propagation measurement campaign. The construction of the neural networks and the adopted approach are described. Positioning performances are evaluated with different selected signatures and different sizes of the fingerprinting database.","PeriodicalId":288042,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology (ISSPIT)","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123496659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A small amount of artifacts can produce significant changes especially, for time domain HRV features. Manual correction of artifacts performed by visual inspection of the signal by experts is tedious and time consuming and often leads to incorrect result especially for long term recordings. Therefore, an automatic artifact removing approach that helps to provide clinically useful HRV analysis is valuable. This paper proposes an algorithm that detects and replaces artifacts from inter-beat interval (IBI) signal for HRV analysis. The detection is mainly based on windowing technique and interpolation is performed using the k-nearest neighbour (K-NN) algorithm. The experimental work shows a promising performance in handling artifacts for HRV analysis using electrocardiogram (ECG) sensor signal.","PeriodicalId":288042,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology (ISSPIT)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121703918","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To maintain optimal timing performances, the control system needs to adapt continuously to these changes. The goodness of a control system depends on timing parameters such as settling time, rise time and overshoot. Avoiding undesirable overshoot, longer settling times and vibration from a state to another one, the designed control system gives optimal control performances. Control problems can be overcome using computational intelligence procedures. The target of this work is to find optimal combinations of intelligent techniques such as fuzzy logic, Genetic Algorithms and neural networks to obtain good control performances. The membership functions of the designed fuzzy controllers are optimized through Genetic Algorithms. Moreover, the fuzzy rules weights are tuned both Genetic Algorithms and neural networks. In this way, the control system has the capability to learn from data. The results show that our controllers improve the timing performances of conventional controllers. Moreover, the fuzzy rules weights optimization with Genetic Algorithms is improved using neural networks techniques which suitably tune the weights.","PeriodicalId":288042,"journal":{"name":"2011 IEEE International Symposium on Signal Processing and Information Technology (ISSPIT)","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-12-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129703774","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
