[4] to an undergraduate online-asynchronous (OA) technical writing course. I consider the opportunities presented by the OA format when engaging with issues of social justice and inclusivity. I also examine how diversity and difference among students might be experienced differently in an OA environment. This case study contributes to TPC research and pedagogy by providing practical examples of the application of social justice theory to the growing body of research on OA teaching.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115301281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We contrast C2, which had the highest number of DMCs in our study, to C1, which had the lowest. Based on a detailed analysis of these DMCs, we argue that the high number in C2’s interviews reflects C2’s readiness to recognize each others’ interests and deliberate about a shared future. This analysis suggests that DMCs can help professional communicators to productively analyze discourse to diagnose community concerns—a starting point for constructive community dialogue.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125017665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Miles Kimball’s definition of tactical technical communication argues that users are laterally communicating problem-solving instructions to each other in direct ways under the strategies of organizations that impose technology. Take DIY culture on YouTube where users can upload and view videos on homebrew solutions to using a technology. This project wants to adopt and adapt this definition of tactical technical communication to argue that migrants are communicating problem-solving instructions to humanitarian operations through indirect methods. For example, migrants in the Sonora desert leave behind litter, footprints, and depressed vegetation to tell humanitarian operation Humane Borders where and when to place water stations. Our field’s recognition of these forms of indirect communication as tactical communication opens avenues for our intervention and improvement of the response from these humanitarian operations.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"135 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131718592","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the case of cybersecurity applications, shortcutting exposes individuals and their organizations to potential threats. While most research in cybersecurity has focused on designing, implementing, and testing enterprise-scale systems, little research exists on cybersecurity for individual devices and especially not the user experience of those applications. Additionally, most literature on cybersecurity systems focuses on the technical aspects of the systems with little regard for the preferences of actual users. The purpose of this study, therefore, was to examine the end user experience of consumer software for securing mobile devices from cyberattacks. Results generated from a three-part method of survey, heuristic analysis, and sentiment analysis suggest that user experience is not a significant obstacle in the adoption of mobile cybersecurity applications. The study, therefore, indicates that individuals’ choice not to protect their mobile devices is behavioral and not a user experience problem Future research should seek to better understand the attitudinal opposition to using mobile cybersecurity applications.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"2 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134260550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, the development of technical communication in academia and industry in China is introduced with a leading university’s graduate program as an example. Literature review and interviews are major methods adopted to study the industry-academia dynamics. After the preliminary research, the paper presents features, different viewpoints, challenges, and opportunities of Chinese technical communication. It is shown that technical communication in China features close international cooperation and academia-industry relationships. The increasing market need, the underdevelopment of educational and vocational training programs, and the lack of established national standards jointly result in the situation that technical communication is identified as a gap in the Chinese market.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114151508","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the absence of a strategy, all content processes are managed in an unplanned way. This paper briefly defines the content problem of a technical communication department that is managed by only five faculty. The research techniques discussed in this project exemplify an efficient (rapid and low-cost) process for identifying content needs and improving content operations. We used content strategy tools such as a content inventory and content audit [1], competitive analysis (website and social media), stakeholder interviews, and literature review on content strategy best practices and case studies specifically focused on higher education to uncover opportunities that can help to improve departmental content and processes related to discovery, linking, formatting, presentation, consistency, frequency, and engagement. Based on the results and our analysis, we developed content strategy recommendations for the technical communication department. The process we used and the suggested recommendations and templates may also be modified or adapted by other programs with similar needs.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131878506","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
