Extended Abstract: Sex Workers & Technical Communication Genres: Creating a Discourse Community Online

Abstract

This extended abstract discusses current work in progress that identifies the various technical communication genres that sex workers use to create communal spaces online for sharing safe work practices, content creation, and knowledge. Using a feminist methodology, the initial research step is to search through various forums, such as the Sex Work Safety subreddit, and the Sex Workers Outreach Program (SWOP USA) to identify various sex worker technical genres being deployed. The extended abstract will discuss both the preliminary data on the TC genres sex workers use online to legitimate their work as “work” and create a discourse community through genre and next stages for the project.
