The paper considers 16 new codes of ethics created for engineers to follow as they design FRT considering its social implications. It contributes to the literature by providing insights into what domains and dimensions emerge from codes of ethics specifically designed to encourage accountability in FRT design. We searched several research databases and conducted Google searches to identify FRT codes of ethics published between 2010 and 2020. The search yielded 16 lists of principles. Analysis revealed that FRT codes of ethics retain many domains typical of engineering codes of ethics, including professionalism and abiding by industry standards. However, the nature of FRT also required additional domains, including rights, consent, and accountability. Themes not only invoked characteristics necessary for engineers to follow but also expected FRT characteristics, such as transparency about errors and bias. FRT codes of ethics show what the industry expects of the actor-network created by FRT deployments and the engineers who design them. FRT codes of ethics are closed-system symbolic and persuasive processes that establish collective perceptions derived from prescriptions from leadership or professional organizations.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"119 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115559426","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a changing landscape in higher education opens up some opportunities for pedagogical design in technical and professional communication. Scholars have argued for teaching technical and professional communication as a humanistic, communalist, and interpretative process. Drawing on the prior scholarships, I propose a cross- cultural team project in a technical and professional communication class with native English speakers, multilingual students, and international students. In this team project students are not expected to land on cultural generalizations. Instead, students are encouraged to apply, appropriate, and “amend” existing linguistic and cultural theories in the decision-making of designing product description and instructions for a foreign audience. The ultimate goal of this intercultural communication practice is to guide student to understand and connect a cultural audience with information in a specific time and place.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"69 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116907530","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper examines the relationships between text and image in the discipline of mechanical engineering, the genre of the design report, and the context of a university first-year introduction to design module. The research question that underpins the study is: what do first-year engineering students’ choices regarding integration of language and image in a design report suggest about their engagement in the design process? Over 50 design reports produced by three consecutive cohorts of first-year mechanical engineering students were collected. These design reports were analysed using the integrative multi-semiotic model as an analytical framework. The analysis reveals that the students struggle to effectively integrate text and image in their design reports, and that the decisions they make reflect misconceptions regarding the content and context of engineering design. The paper reflects on how this might be used to inform teaching and learning and prepare engineers in training to successfully communicate with a wide variety of audiences, as is required of engineering degree programmes.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"155 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117028297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Specifically, I take a recent joint effort with biotechnologists as a case study to reflect on how technical communicators might position ourselves to address NSF priorities such as advancing responsible innovation; broadening participation of underrepresented groups; and addressing ethical, legal, and social dimensions of emerging technologies. Integrating these priorities with technical communication and science studies scholarship, I propose an iterative method of professional communication that aims to subtly integrate the consideration of social and ethical concerns into scientific practice over time. I conclude by reviewing lessons learned to offer advice for scholars and practitioners interested in undertaking similar interdisciplinary work.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115227183","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In an effort to blend technical and humanistic methods, our research team is comprised of academics in technical communication and students in engineering and technical communication. We sought to understand our respective fields better by applying a mixed-methods approach to analyzing large sets of job ads. Each panelist will address how this interdisciplinary research frames their thinking and approach to their respective fields and career trajectories, sharing data and findings about content strategy, engineering, and UX job advertisements. Additionally, student members of the panel will demonstrate the Job Ad User Tool (JAUT) and share their insights. Each panelist will end with a discussion of their findings and implications for future studies. The panel offers a replicable research process for surveying the field, and thus far, we have created at least one application of this research for practitioner job applicants to improve job materials. Although our current application focuses on engineering fields, our approach can be applied to other areas, such as content strategy and UX.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130903816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Drawing on experiences from two regions (the Aichi Prefecture of Japan and Northwest Arkansas in the U.S.), we discuss and illustrate each D in the framework, showing how they interrelate in regional ecosystems and relating them to professional communication research. We conclude by discussing how this framework can help professional communicators to spark and constructively manage regional deliberations about developing entrepreneurial ecosystems. Further, the effectiveness of the 5D framework to promote action to grow regional economic outcomes is illustrated by specific examples taken by both study regions.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128736272","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It raises the question over whether if different genres of technical writing had been used these airplane crashes could have been prevented. The essay argues that while some forms of technical writing are metonymic in nature, depending on the genre of writing used, the manner in which metonymy operates, and how metonymic content is communicated, metonymy can vary from genre to genre. Consequently, the essay also argues that if different genres of writing had been used as documentation for the 737 Max, both crashes may not have happened.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126572736","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the study, participants are required to speculate on a future scenario in which an imaginary technology related to food exists and is affecting people’s life and society. Through guided speculation and critical reflection, participants connect clips of future scenarios to complete fictional stories. The results show that participants’ design fictions contain various elements that reflect the writers’ awareness of social responsibilities. We argue that for teaching technical writing, this study suggests a novel approach that is engaging and innovative, which can be a good complement to the current curriculum. For engineering education, this study shows the potential of design fiction in cultivating awareness of social responsibilities in engineers on a “macroethical” level.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134019833","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While using standardized grades has been useful, this system has failed to perform in composition classrooms—especially regarding the writing process. Composition pedagogy scholars like Peter Elbow, Richard Veit, Paul Thomas, and more have found assigning grades to a writing product to be limiting in emphasizing the importance of the writing process while learning to write. While many pedagogy scholars have proposed grading alternatives that emphasize process, I argue that a modified portfolio approach most fully mitigates the loss of emphasis on process. Many educators and scholars have used portfolio grading in their courses (like Peter Elbow and Kathleen Jones) but applying a fresh approach to this practice can help revitalize it for the technical communication classroom. Applying a modified portfolio grading system to a technical communication course can help students understand the importance of the writing process overall.","PeriodicalId":286504,"journal":{"name":"2022 IEEE International Professional Communication Conference (ProComm)","volume":"110 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128006502","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
