Through such a framework, individuals attribute meaning to the world around them. In this context, meaningfulness is understood as an orientation process within a meaning framework that provides direction towards 'the good'. For Hannah Arendt, natality refers to the capacity to do the unexpected, initiate something new, take action, and 'become someone'. This act of initiating something new can be preceded by significant moments of reflection or entering a moral space. Spiritual counsellors can support individuals in this moral orientation process towards the good. A meaning framework is part of a larger entity, referred to as the epistemic structure of our society, which traditionally focuses on mortality. This conventional understanding of death is crucial for reconciling with life. In contrast, the meaning of natality emphasizes the future, hope, and change through the initiation of new actions. Thus, the concept of natality has the potential to broaden our contemporary epistemic structure of meaning-making. Achieving this, however, requires study, deconstruction, and intentional change.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"37 S165","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-07-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"141835314","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The theatrical farewell ceremony, staged by Gouden Haas in 2023, invites the audience to become part of an inclusive ecological community. This invitation incorporates various Christian liturgical elements adapted for the occasion, capitalizing on the ritual repertoire of existing (religious) traditions modified to address the current theme of the climate crisis. Using Herinner ons as a case study, this article argues that intertextuality and interperformativity are relevant in the process of meaning-making prompted by the current climate crisis. In this process, existing liturgical and ritual practices undergo transformation, acquiring new forms and meanings in response to the challenges posed by the climate crisis.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"2 9","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-04-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140654583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Besides the Catholic Church of Rome and the Reformed ‘public church’, there were ecclesial bodies of ‘Protestant Dissenters’. The 1834 Secession provoked a lot of splits and (re)unions up to the present, whereas the breakthrough of religious freedom in 1848 enabled the establishment of many new groups (partly imported from abroad). In the past fifty years, several didactic and sometimes ecumenical or apologetical schemes of denominations were published, showing in particular the labyrinth of the Reformed world. At the same time, the Christian landscape underwent structural changes because of repatriation from former colonies, immigration from numerous countries, and regrouping of evangelical believers. Given the developments of secularization (and, as a result, declining knowledge of the national church map), internationalization (rising non-Dutchdenominations), and inclusivity (dealing with the colonial past), a new design of the Dutch ‘Christian family tree’ seems to be welcome. Therefore, this article offers a basis by discussing earlier examples, presenting a historically justified alternative, while welcoming feedback from the field and recommending a creative elaboration with digital tools.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"29 19","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139445013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it is intriguing that ‘Ave Maria’ is still among the Top 10 most popular songs that are played during funerals. This article shows various motivations for listening to an Ave Maria: expressing a shared Christian identity; expressing the Christian identity of the deceased; ‘it is a beautiful piece of music’; and ‘it belongs to the funeral’. It is argued that the Ave Maria provides some latitude (speelruimte) in contemporary secularised and individualized funerary culture.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"56 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139447874","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the defining features of Liberal Judaism is the renewed interpretation of certain commandments in Jewish law. In these communities women are permitted to take on certain roles and tasks traditionally reserved for men. A symbol of this change is the use of a prayer shawl, a tallit, during services on Shabbat. However, the practice of women wearing a tallit is disputed and was often discussed amongst the newcomers I interviewed. For some wearing a prayer shawl marked the full inclusion in Judaism after a long and challenging conversion process, whilst others were hesitant or even opposed to wearing a tallit for various reasons related to gender norms. This article analyses the different uses of a prayer shawl by my research participants as an illustration of the varying gender norms in Liberal Judaism as well as the role of gender in giyur trajectories.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131197338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
