This exemption became controversial in 2007, when it was re-emphasised by a new government coalition that comprised two faith-based parties. Through critical discourse analysis of printed, online and televised media sources between 2007 and 2014, this article discusses the Dutch public controversy on the weigerambtenaar (lit. ‘refusing civil servant’) alias ‘marriage registrar with conscientious objections’ (viz. against conducting same-sex wedding ceremonies). It shows how the weigerambtenaar became a social problem, how religion and homosexuality were constructed in the public imagination concerning the weigerambtenaar, and how marriage was conceptualized in terms of religion and (homo)sexuality.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129374161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is often stated in public debates that the sexual values of Christians, and even more so those of Muslims, diverge from the progressive, secular sexual values that have increasingly come to be taken as the norm. Similar conclusions emerge from existing comparative studies, which are mainly based on quantitative research. However, such research, in which the opinions of religious people are ‘measured’, tells us little about the roles these values play in religious life. Based on my ethnographic research among Sunni and Protestant young adults, my focus in this article is on this lived dimension of values. Discussing the similarities and differences in dealing with issues of sexuality between these groups, I show that, more than my Muslim interlocutors, the young Christians with whom I worked strongly emphasized the theme of sexuality in their attempts at distinguishing themselves from the secular ‘mainstream’.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"323 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133980076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Often the social environment of teenagers has a strong judgement on what they should do: abortion or parenthood. Although women in the Netherlands have legal and safe access to abortion, there is also a deep ambivalence about the morality of abortion manifest in politics and media. In this article I analyse the decision-making of girls who are confronted with an unintended pregnancy. In-depth interviews with 46 girls who got pregnant before their 20th birthday illuminate their motives for the choice they made. It also shows their resilience. Often, becoming pregnant and motherhood helped them to take better care of themselves. In that sense, pregnancy was a blessing in disguise, marking a turning point in a girl’s life. This was applicable to young mothers, but also to girls who had an abortion against the wishes of their social environment, since they took back control on their lives.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132475747","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the other hand, however, sexual desires and pleasures are acknowledged, even apart from procreation. A key concept is ‘chastity’, which should not be equated with the requirement that women remain virgins until marriage. This article gives an overview of Islamic sexual morality, discussing not only the teachings of the Qur’an and of Muslim scholars but also present-day reflections, as part of ‘lived religion’. It focuses on controversial themes such as polygamy (or polygyny), female slaves, and homosexuality, and shows how present-day Muslims negotiate Islamic sexual morality, navigating ‘between dogma and everyday practice’.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124578256","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Ecce Homo, which depicts twelve moments from the life of Jesus Christ, traditional church art is mixed with the themes and symbols of contemporary LGBT-culture. In the article it is investigated, through a queer focus, whether Ecce Homo has the potential to destabilize the rather strict oppositional pairing of religion and homosexuality in contemporary debates in post-secular societies like Sweden. Based on a discussion of three works (The Annunciation, Palm Sunday and Calvary) it is argued that Ecce Homo connects traditional Christian motives such as the love for one’s neighbor, (self)sacrifice and charity to queer concepts such as the instability of gender and sexuality and the destabilizing potential of ‘darkness’ as an aesthetic theme. As queer and Christian concepts inform each other they are given meaning in relation to each other, thus indeed (for the most part) suggesting that queer and Christian themes are relevant to one another and sometimes overlap.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128756872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Yet, little is known about how this is implemented. Based on classroom observations, semi-structured interviews with teachers and content analysis of teaching materials, this article analyzes secondary-school teachers’ discourse and practices. It was found that sexual diversity remains a marginalized subject, which is usually discussed in merely one of a series of lessons on sexuality that makes part of the biology curriculum. Both in faith-based and in non-religious schools, teachers primarily aim at showing students how LGBT-people are discriminated against, and at making them reflect on how to respond if someone close to them were to come out as being gay. An unintended consequence of this approach is that it reconfirms heterosexuality as a norm, and fails to empower LGBT-students.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115822205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a dialogue becomes possible when we no longer presuppose a break between the late modern and the traditional Christian narrative but conceive of both as closely related and even interconnected. Building on the work of authors such as Charles Taylor and Oliver O’Donovan this is demonstrated with respect to some features of late modern sexuality. Against that background some proposals are made to illustrate how a dialogue with the ‘opposing’ party would, in fact, be profitable to both.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115822526","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Drempels bij de communicatie over ervaringen van seksueel geweld","authors":"J. Day, A. Dillen","doi":"10.54195/rs.12195","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.54195/rs.12195","url":null,"abstract":"This article is based on qualitative empirical research conducted among social workers/therapists in Flanders/Brussels who have experience in working with children in Muslim families who have been the victims of sexual abuse. The fundamental question underlying this research is whether elements can be identified that are particular to children from Muslim families. Social workers/therapists have indeed discovered differences. This article brings together the perspective of caregivers and the results of an investigation of the relevant literature. Honour and shame are concepts that contribute to taboos surrounding sexual abuse within many Muslim families. For example, great importance is attached to safeguarding the virginity of girls. Social workers/therapists also refer to the shame associated with loss of manliness among abused boys. Talking about sexual abuse incites certain fears that are specific to children from Muslim families: children are afraid of not being believed, of being rejected, and of no longer finding a marriage partner. Moreover, there is sometimes fear of revenge. The importance of family structures was also clearly expressed. Family ties often reach further than the nuclear family. While members of the extended family can be used as a resource, they are often also associated with fear of revenge and shame. Certain role patterns are likewise aspects that influence the provision of aid and assistance following sexual abuse. The results of this research can support social workers and therapists in being attentive specifically to the sexual abuse of children, and to consider Islamic cultural and religious dimensions and experiences.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132556648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
