Peace, these contemplative activists argue, is not an external material condition, but an embodied, mystical experience beyond religion, language and social roles that brings about social change. Scholars should therefore reconsider the claim that spirituality in the public domain only supports the neoliberal status quo. This article shows such movements instead challenge a liberal conceptualization of peace by rejecting an ontological separation of inner experiences and outer reality. The argument developed in this article, then, is twofold: firstly, contemplative activism shows that spirituality becomes a form of social action and social action becomes a form of spirituality. Secondly, if scholars want to better understand how spiritual people respond to societal challenges, they must begin by recognizing that for many spiritual activists interior experiences and exterior realities are not separate realms of being.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"191 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114190075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main criticisms are that confessional RE in general, and Islamic RE in particular, has an outdated pedagogy, while its content does not fit in contemporary Western society. In Flanders and in the Netherlands, many teachers of Islamic RE struggle with the question how confessional Islamic RE can, both pedagogically and with regard to content, be faithful towards the Islamic tradition and at the same time connect with contemporary Western society. In this contribution, the author argues that an integrative perspective on Islamic pedagogy, with particular attention for the rich hermeneutical tradition in Islam, could transcend this dichotomy.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114072623","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to a difficult start, the school subject is, up until the present day, highly contested and challenged. In order to increase its quality, several initiatives have been taken over the past decades. One of these initiatives is the establishment of teacher training programs for Islamic religious education. The article first discusses the complex story of the instutionalization of Islam in Belgium. Subsequently, an overview of the different trajectories regarding the professionalization of Islamic education is given. In order to make the reader familiar with these trajectories, we focus on the curriculum of Islamic religious education in two Flemish university colleges. Contents, subject didactics, teaching internships and student testimonies clarify the teaching strategy. In conclusion, we argue that there is still room for quality improvement. In this regard, this article provides useful recommendations such as increasing the number of inspectors, updating the curriculum, and providing innovative learning materials.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123523934","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this article, I outline the progress made so far. In the first section of the article, I discuss the general educational vision of LERVO that we have developed in dialogue with Gert Biesta’s theoretical pedagogy, Wolfgang Klafki’s theory of Bildung, and Fred Janssen’s ‘perspectives approach’ (perspectiefgerichte benadering). The second part of the article presents a new framework for the national curriculum, consisting of nine perspectives on worldview and religion (e.g., the meaning-making and phenomenological perspectives), and three additional learning lines focused, respectively, on dimensions of worldviews and religions, important traditions, and societal challenges.","PeriodicalId":286339,"journal":{"name":"Religie & Samenleving","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128437020","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
