In order to characterize samples, sociodemographic data were collected. And, in order to describe functional profile, the body map and functional items were applied based on Oswestry questionnaire. Results: Between 28.6% and 68.8% of the population with CLBP presented disability, depending on the analyzed function. Chronic lower back pain was negatively associated with function in lifting objects (rarely, OR 2.39 IC 95%, 1.15-4.97) and remaining seated (OR 10.40 IC 95% 3.32- 32.46). In opposition to that, walking was associated to increased function (frequently, OR 0.47 IC 95% 0.30 – 0,72). Conclusions: Chronic lower back pain is frequently associated with disability. Lifting objects and remaining seated were the functional items that presented higher association with disability. Walking habits seem to be a protector from this disability in chronic lower back pain individuals.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122275860","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

HCV has a major impact on public health, because it infects around 3% worldwide population, with an estimated global incidence of three to four million new infections per year. HCV infection was first suspected in the 1970s, when this new type of hepatitis transmitted by blood was then called “non-A, non-B” hepatitis. HCV is an enveloped, positive-stranded RNA virus, and its genome was identified in 1989. It’s transmitted primarily via the blood route through of injection drug use, sharing syringes, and blood transfusion. Anti-HCV antibody and HCV RNA testing are used to diagnose acute and chronic hepatitis C, and HCV genotype should be systematically determined for indication and duration of treatment. After acute infection, 15%-25% of persons appear to resolve their infection without sequelae, whereas 75%-85% evolve to chronicity, which may exhibit various complications with the evolution of the infection. The standard treatment for chronic infection with HCV in the last decade has been the combination therapy of pegylated interferon alpha plus ribavirin. However, this therapy is associated with significant adverse effects, but recent developments of new drugs’ combinations are changing the treatment paradigm in HCV infection. In this article, we review the information on HCV, how the HCV biology, diagnosis, management, preventive modalities, and therapeutics.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"127 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122323206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: Questionnaires were applied for public health system users; pharmacists who work at compounding pharmacies; physicians and nurses. Data were submitted to descriptive statistical analysis. Results: The sociodemographic profile was individuals between 40 and 59 yearsold, majority of females, low family income, and low schooling levels. A great number of individuals (89.3%) used plant products, without prescription and based on traditional knowledge. There was a common trend regarding a lack of knowledge of plant toxicity potential. Regarding health professionals, 90% stated having knowledge about medicinal plants and/or herbal medicines, and 80% believe that its effect is important. Conclusion: The study reveals the major usage of herbal medicines and/or medicinal plants by familiar low income and low schooling level without prescription from a physician. These factors may cause a risk/benefit imbalance where could have a reduction in therapy efficacy and high toxicity potential of the drugs. This reinforces the need of pharmacosurveillance toward usage of medicinal plants and herbal medicines in the public health system.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"354 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122798529","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective: Report the association between the presence of mixed-cryoglobulinemia and thyroid dysfunction (TD) in hepatitis C virus carriers before and during treatment with pegylatedinterferon-alpha (Peg-IFN-α). Methods: Prospective cohort study. Results: Sixty-five untreated HCV patients, 38 women and 27 men were included in this study. Mean age of patients was 49.61 ± 11.83 years. Cryoglobulinemia was demonstrated in 24 (36.92%) patients. The TD was demonstrated in 2 patients (3.10%) before treatment with IFN-α, in 4 patients (6.20%) at 12th week, and 8 patients (12.30%) at 24th week; whereas autoimmune thyroid (TPO-Ab) positive was demonstrated in 3 patients (4.60%) before treatment, in 7 patients (10.80%) at 12th week, and 12 patients (18.50%) at 24th week. In the sample analyzed, the risk of a patient with cryoglobulinemia develop TD was 2.74 (95% CI: 1.95–12.95) times that of a patient without cryoglobulinemia in the 12th week of treatment and 1.83 (95% CI: 1.03–7.08) times in the 24th week of antiviral treatment, and risk of a patient with cryoglobulinemia for develop TPO Ab positive was 2.44 (95% CI: 1.46–5.98) times that of a patient without cryoglobulinemia in the 12th week of treatment, and 1.31 (95% CI: 1.05–2.89) times in the 24th weeks of antiviral treatment. Conclusion: We concluded that thyroid function evaluation should be recommended for HCV carriers that are seropositive for cryoglobulinemia.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128319222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is not known whether these differences remain evident when people are under stroke condition. Our aim was to describe clinical and functional characteristics and to compare a dual task performance between older and younger post stroke individuals. Methods: We evaluated hemiparetic patients with independent gait between August/2011 and August/2012. The following scales/tests were applied: NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS), Modified Barthel Index (mBI), Timed Up and Go Test (TUG) and TUG with cognitive task (TUGcog). X2, Fisher tests or Mann Whitney U test were used when appropriated. Results: Amongst 92 participants 54.3% were adults and 45.7% were elder adults. Adults and elder adults presented similar characteristics, although statistical difference was observed at instruction level (P = .01), hypertension (P= .02), verbal fluency (P < .01) and delta time for TUGcog (P < .01). Conclusion: Individuals post stroke in this study presented slightly clinical and functional differences, but it was possible to observe that older need more time to perform multitasking. Probably, age alone is not an important factor in differentiating independent stroke patients. However, postural instability, in elderly patients, should be evaluated more carefully taking into account the attentional demands, since dual task is used in many activities of daily life.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130237966","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gestational diabetes relates to maternal and fetus later development of chronic cardiovascular diseases. We perform an exploratory analysis to assess the prevalence of cardiac structural and functional abnormalities in pregnant women with gestational diabetes. Methods: We enrolled 20 consecutive pregnant women with gestational diabetes and 30 healthy pregnant women as controls. Participants with age less than 18 years, previous gestational diabetes, hypertension, cardiac diseases, lung diseases, or medications other than vitamins were excluded. A comprehensive echocardiography protocol was performed in all participants, including 2D views, M-mode technique, flow assessment, and tissue Doppler imaging to acquire cardiac structural and functional parameters. A cross-sectional analysis was performed to assess relations of gestational diabetes with echocardiography-derived parameters. Results: Women with gestational diabetes had higher weight compared to normal pregnant participants, but the cardiovascular risk profile was similar in both groups. LV mass index was significantly higher in women with gestational diabetes when compared to normal pregnant controls, but the other echocardiography-derived parameters were similar in both groups. Gestational diabetes had significant predictive power on higher values of LV mass index, consistent after adjustment for anthropometrics, risk factors, and gynecological history. Conclusion: The presence of gestational diabetes has a consistent independent relation with higher values of LV mass index, but not with other measurements of LV systolic and diastolic function. Myocardial hypertrophy appears to be an early marker of gestational diabetes-related cardiac injury.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124254381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
