In this segment, different workers with different type of foods are included, especially the popsicles. Methods: This study aimed to characterize microbiologically the popsicles commercialized on the beaches of Salvador, Bahia State. A cross-sectional study was carried out on 13 beaches, with the application of semi- structured questionnaires to 33 vendors  to  characterize  microbiologically  the  popsicles sold on the beaches of Salvador, Bahia State, and the collecting of 198 samples, which were submitted to analysis: counting of Psychrotrophic microorganisms and coagulase-positive staphylococci , estimation of the Most Likely Number of total and thermolerant Coliforms/ Escherichia coli and Salmonella spp research. Results: The results showed that in the microbiological profile, most of the samples were in compliance with the standards. However, 34.3% (68) of non-compliance were recorded, including contamination by the various microorganisms studied, except for Salmonella spp ., which was not identified. Conclusion: The study identified risks to the costumer's health, given the contamination in the products, for both groups of sellers.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"98 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122597385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Case Report: The patient underwent rectosigmoidectomy (of the sigmoid volvulus, December 2009) and total colectomy plus partial ileectomy (May 2011). Patient evolved with multiple hospitalizations caused by severe diarrhea (up to 23 stools/day), hydroelectrolyte disturbance and acute renal failure, severe protein-energy malnutrition [loss of 34.9% of usual body weight (uBW)], and multiple episodes of sepsis. Were prescribed parenteral nutrition solutions exclusively or concurrently with very small volumes (e.g., 40ml/day) of semi-elemental diet with low fat and high protein. After several weeks predetermined amounts of carbohydrate-rich foods (potatoes, rice, pasta, cassava), vegetables (chayote, carrots), low-fat meat, cream crackers, coconut water and fruit (watermelon, melon, banana) were progressively introduced. After 36 months, the patient was metabolically stable (BW=67.2 kg, weight recovery of 23.6 kg), with hydroelectrolytic balance. Due to the recovery of the functional capacity, the patient was advised to return to his work activities.  Conclusions: Chagas’s disease patient submitted to intestinal resection may have severe intestinal failure and protein-energy malnutrition. Specialized nutritional therapy and clinical and laboratory monitoring by a multidisciplinary team, can contribute to better prognostic.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129665527","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objectives: To evaluate the occurrence of Candida species in the genital tract of women attending a clinic of Gynecology and Obstetrics at the University Hospital for gynecological interventions, related to signs and symptoms of infection and also to evaluate the susceptibility to antifungal agents of the Candida isolates. Methods and materials: Samples of vaginal secretions were taken of 128 women during gynecological and colposcopic examination, through sterile swab, to carry out culture for fungi. Susceptibility tests were performed for fluconazole, itraconazole, voriconazole, nystatin and amphotericin B. Results: Twenty (15.6%) patients had positive culture for yeasts identified as: C. albicans (57.1%), C. glabrata (19%), C. parapsilosis complex (4.8%), C. lipolytica (4.8%), Trichosporon sp (9.5%), and Rhodotorula sp (4.8%). Ninety women (70.3%) reported no symptoms and 38 (29.6%) were symptomatic. The most frequent complaints were: discharge, vulval itching, and dyspareunia. All isolates were susceptible to the antifungal agents tested, except for some isolates of C. parapsilosis complex, which showed in vitro resistance to itraconazole. Conclusions: Although Candida species were isolated in only some of the women, C. albicans was the most common species. The more frequent complaints were discharge and vulvar itching. Most of the isolates were susceptible to the antifungals tested.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116758962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

While the size of the population, civil status, gender, sending and receiving, and socioeconomic position of emigrants have varied over the decades, the majority of Brazilian e/immigrants to the U.S. always claimed that they had to leave Brazil, at least temporarily, to improve their living conditions. These émigrés were optimistic that life in the U.S would be better because they would make more money, buy state of the art consumer products, send remittances to family members, live in good apartments or houses located in safe neighborhoods, and provide good education and health for their children. In contrast, other Brazilians left their homeland to escape from conditions such as domestic violence, community violence, and sexual oppression, wherein family and community life were sources of intense suffering and stress, if not life threatening.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-03-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124347216","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to achieve such goal, it is essential to choose an appropriate tool to evaluate the peculiarities of each population. Instruments to investigate HRQoL, NHP and SF-36 are alike in several aspects and are considered by the scientific community as replaceable each other. However, there are doubts regarding the agreement of their social domains. Objective: The present study aim to assess whether the social domains of the NHP and SF-36 correspond when applied in a population with chronic disease. Methods: The present research was made by applying the two instruments to a population with chronic disease. The social domains agreement was evaluated by Pearson correlation, ROC curve, AUC, Youdex Index, and Bland-Altman plot. Results: It was achieve a weak correlation between the two social domais (r = 0.3), confirmed by ROC curve with small AUC (0.416) and Youdex Index around 0.0. The Bland-Altman plot reaffirmed the no agreement between the two subscale by achieving mean difference equal to 29.37 (± 38.51), which made the concordance Interval vary from 106.39 to -47.65. Conclusion: it was concluded that social domains of NHP and SF-36 do not agree to each other. However, reasons for that are not explained and need to be investigated in futures studies. However, as new technologies, medications, treatments, and procedures are being developed rapidly, clinicians are expected to incorporate this new information into their daily practices, apply this knowledge to their patients, track each patient’s individual health status and background, while communicating quickly with patients, hospitals, and other providers. Additionally, clinicians are expected to keep up with the latest published medical data in the hopes of increasing the accuracy of diagnoses and treatments to improve patient health outcomes. However, there is a “small” problem with this expectation, there is not enough hours in a day to accomplish all of these tasks. According to a report by the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, it would take at least 160 hours (or four 40-hour work weeks) of reading every single week just to keep up with new medical knowledge as it’s published, let alone applying the effort to consider its relevance or to implement it practically. This places false expectations on clinicians. While they may be an experienced doctor, they still require a process which delivers functional, meaningful, efficient, and user-friendly technology to their daily work environment. Therefore, it is important to develop a methodology to support and compliment the recent strategy of health care delivery and payments.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126407831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main causes are post-infectious, post-vaccination, autoimmune and demyelinating diseases. In a literature review based on five cases of TM during pregnancy and puerperal period have been reported. We report a female patient in the immediate postpartum period who presented acute transverse myelites after receiving double viral vaccine (measles and rubella). After exclusion of other causes, patient received methylprednisolone in high doses ( 1000 mg for 3 consecutives days)  and had complete clinical reversal. Thus it is intended to report this rare occurrence which is post-vaccination TM in the postpartum period.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133385101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Predictors of condom use will help in understanding groups requiring more interventions. This study aims at determining the prevalence and predictors of male condom utilization in Ondo State. Methods This is a secondary data analysis of the Nigeria National Demographic and Health Survey (NDHS) 2013 data set. Ondo state data was extracted. The study area was Ondo State, Nigeria. It was a descriptive cross-sectional study and it focused on men between ages 15-49 years. Descriptive statistics were done. Data was analysed using Chi-square test and logistic regression. Level of statistical significance was p<0.05. Results The mean age of the 404 respondents was 29 ± 10 years, 215 (53.2%) were never in a marital union, 258 (63.8%) had secondary level of education. Out of 318 (78.7%) respondents who have ever had sex 91(28.7%) used condom at last sex. In age 15-24 categories 37(59.7%) used condoms while only 54(24.7%) used among respondents above 25 years, p<0.001. Among those who were never in any marital union 58(60.4%) used condom compared to 13(22.8%) of those who were living with partners, p<0.001. Men who were not in union had about 4 times odds of using condoms (OR 3.6, 95% Cl: 1.5-8.7, p=0.004). Conclusion To reduce the prevalence of HIV/AIDS and transmission of STI emphasis needs to be put on the use of condom. Effort at promoting condom use should be encouraged among men in marital union especially those having extramarital sex.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133614151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
