It is three times more common in women than in men. AIMS: To analyze the changes in the rates of hospital morbidity and mortality from thyroid cancer in Brazil during the period from 2000 to 2012. MATERIAL AND METHODS: This is an ecological study, with data from the Brazilian Health Information Systems. Data regarding hospital morbidity and mortality from thyroid cancer (CID 10 C73) were collected as well as variables such as schooling, ethnicity and age group. RESULTS: This study identified 39,191 hospitalizations for thyroid cancer and 6,914 deaths from the same cause in the period investigated, with the occurrence and deaths much higher in women. Furthermore, the number of cases is also greater in subjects with incomplete basic schooling, and among individuals aged between 40-49 years. DISCUSSION: The findings are supported by other studies, although some of the characteristics of the patients have never been evaluated previously. CONCLUSION:  Over the 13 year period assessed, there was an increase in the rates of hospital morbidity and mortality from thyroid cancer for both men and women in Brazil. More research on this subject is needed as well as health policies to increase awareness of the population about thyroid cancer and improve access to health services.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-12-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127332117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, the concept of biotechnological autonomy is formulated, which is important for our analysis of longevity, an analogy to the analysis of fi niteness. In this paper, discourses were evaluated in which these practices are interpreted as “technologies of hope” or “of longevity”, stem cells being the means by which the biosciences promise to postpone death and control various diseases. We have sought to show how a mentality of aging and decrepitude is being overcome by the idea of longevity, forged by technologies that aim to recover the embryonic atavism of rebirth.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130470876","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods: A total of 43 postpartum women and 24 newborns were selected in the municipal maternity hospital of Alagoinhas, Bahia, Brazil between February and December 2003, for this cross-sectional study. The presence of Pg was verified using polymerase chain reaction. The immunoglobulin serum levels: IgG1, IgG2, IgG3, IgG4 and IgA, reactive to Pg ATCC33277, were tested using ELISA.  Results: 39,3% of the postpartum women biofilm samples were positive for Pg. The incidence of the pathogen in the women with periodontitis (70%) was higher than in the group of women without periodontitis (30,30%). Among the newborns, high serum levels of IgG4 anti-Pg were observed (p<0.001). Conclusion: Our findings confirm that postpartum women with periodontitis present remarkable incidence of Porphyromonas gingivalis which may influence systemic response, as represented by high levels of serum antibody levels against this pathogen in women and newborns. Furthermore, evidence suggests that some antibodies crossed the placental barrier in newborns.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123746294","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One classification system divides APE into cardiogenic or non-cardiogenic adult respiratory distress syndrome – ARDS. This study reviews cardiogenic APE, which is the most severe clinical presentation of heart failure (ADHF), and its relationship with the increase of troponin along with other factors such as abnormalities in the electrocardiogram (ECG) that may be mistaken for acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Atypical symptoms could occur in the presentation of ACS in 8,4% of cases, as has been shown in the Global Registry of Acute Coronary Events (GRACE): dyspnea (49%), sudoresis (26%), nauseas or vomiting (24%) and syncope (19%). The CK-MB enzyme was replaced by cardiac troponin (cTn) as the chosen marker of myocardial necrosis in the diagnosis of AMI in the late 90s. The cTn is a marker of cardiac damage, not just cardiac ischemia, and this may pose questions as whether there is a myocardium infarction or not. The positive results of a cTn should be interpreted considering the clinical signs of myocardial ischemia. The challenge remains and further studies are needed to aid in accurate diagnosis of both conditions (APE and ACS) as well as cases in which one results from the other because the role of coronary artery disease in acute heart failure has not been well studied in clinical trials.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127568488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Reduced physical functioning decreases quality of life of people living with HIV and AIDS. Objective: This study was intended to assess self-reported physical functioning and factors associated with it among adult outpatients living with HIV and AIDS who are on ART at the University of Gondar Hospital HIV Care Clinic. Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted on 313 adults living with HIV and AIDS from March to May 2013. The Short Form-36 physical functioning subscale was used to assess physical functioning. The physical functioning subscale was transformed to range from 0 to a 100 to make all values on same metric, and mean was calculated. Finally normbased scoring method was used to determine whether they have good or poor physical functioning. Result: Total mean score of physical functioning was 59.43 (SD=10.7). Among 313 participants, 191 (61%) reported good physical functioning. More than half of the subjects (61%) were independent in work-capacity. Two hundred and nineteen (70%) individuals were independent in mobility and 96.8% in self-care. Good physical functioning was associated with CD4 counts ≥250 cells/mm3 [AOR=1.84, 95% CI:1.02,3.31], excellent general health [AOR=4.14,95% CI:2.12, 7.07], absent or very mild bodily pain [AOR=4.04, 95% CI: 2.03,6.59] and high bodily energy [AOR=7.70, 95% CI: 4.32, 8.52]. Conclusion: This study found that majority of the subjects had good physical functioning and were independent in self-care activities. Higher CD4 counts, vitality, general health and level of mild bodily pain were factors determining physical functioning. This research indicates the need of designing rehabilitation strategies for people living with HIV and AIDS.","PeriodicalId":280405,"journal":{"name":"Brazilian Journal of Medicine and Human Health","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126450166","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

From 2007, outbreaks with an increasing number of cases, including cases with neurological manifestations, have been occurring in Pacific islands. In 2015, ZIKV reached Brazil with an explosive number of cases and a severe neurological impact on fetuses and newborns. The natural history and several immunological aspects of ZIKV infection need to be characterized. In this review it is summarized the spread of ZIKV around the world and pointed out some gaps on the immunological knowledge related to the infection.
