Difficulty arises in properly modeling these types of batteries due to a large number of parameters and different architectures. This paper looks at studying six different Li-ion battery models found in literature, and compares their relative performance based on a benchmark dataset. Kalman-based filtering strategies are also employed to estimate important battery parameters such as capacitance, hysteresis, and state of charge (SOC). In addition, the relatively new smooth variable structure filter (SVSF) is used and compared with these Kalman-based strategies.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126123478","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The electric drive system is designed to have similar performance to the stock truck, a 2002 model year Ford F150, with a 4.2L 150kW (peak) gasoline-powered engine. The power capabilities of lithium batteries from two manufacturers have been measured to aid in designing a battery pack that can supply sufficient voltage, power and range. A prototype interior permanent magnet (IPM) synchronous machine has been designed that can produce the desired output power with the chosen battery pack and a commercial motor controller. Dynamometer test results are provided for the machine that demonstrates a close match to the predicted performance. Additionally, the other vehicle system components that must be electrified as well as the custom data acquisition and battery management systems are described.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129503946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents a mathematical model of a proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) with its integrated humidifier, in which the dynamic behaviors are considered for mobile applications. The model will be integrated in a hybrid system and it was developed on the mass balance and electrochemical principles. The inlet air is humidified by a membrane-based passive humidifier which presents the advantage of not adding parasitic power loss in the system. The presented model is useful for co-simulation with electrical or hybrid vehicle model for power components conditioning purpose.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128229872","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The total equivalent series inductance (ESL) is dictated by internal switch branch inductance with a significant contribution in the current path to the DC link capacitor. Using traditional topologies, external ESL dominates and by-pass capacitors (“snubbers”) are used to mitigate overshoot. Integrated capacitor/bus designs provide an external ESL comparable to internal values for commercial IGBT's. The minimized ESL regime allows reduced switch turn-off time with slightly increased losses to manage overshoot without the cost, space, weight, dissipation, and reliability associated with by-pass capacitors.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"140 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127043672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Understanding the merits, demerits and state of art technology of induction motor and its drive in electric and hybrid electric vehicle (EV/HEV) application, this research manuscript proposes a novel approach towards electrical loss minimization in vector controlled induction machine drives for the aforementioned application. This paper serves as a good theoretical study of the developed loss minimization scheme which would be later incorporated into an overall vector controlled induction machine drive for enhancing the efficiency of the electrified vehicle. Firstly, an insight is provided on the state or art induction motor technology in EV/HEV and the significance of incorporating core loss in an induction machine. Secondly, the conventional two-axis model of an induction motor incorporating core loss has been used to propose a novel loss minimization algorithm. Rotor flux has been used as the control variable for this purpose.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124997102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This reduced efficiency is the result of factors such as deteriorated lithium-ion battery performance at extreme temperatures and engine operating temperature at start-up. This paper presents a method that considers the particular case of a series configured Extended Range Electric Vehicle (EREV) operating in charge sustaining mode. A computer optimization strategy is proposed and implemented for determining an optimum engine on/off scheduling strategy for cold-weather operation, specifically for charging the traction battery in a series configured EREV operating in charge sustaining mode.
