SRM has duality in the characteristics and control in motoring and generating modes, but due to the absence of magnetic source on the rotor, switched reluctance generator (SRG) has a unique operation as compared to other electric machines. This paper investigates the generating performance of the new family of SRMs with higher number of rotor poles. The proposed SRM configuration allows improved torque and operational characteristics than the conventional SRM. The simulation and experimental results on a 3 phase 6/10 SRM verify that the higher number of rotor poles and, hence, higher number strokes doesn't bring any control complexity in generating mode using the conventional control techniques and converter. Moreover, it has been experimentally verified that 6/10 SRG is capable of maintaining its operation even when there is fault in one or two of its phase windings.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121874921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the high population density and narrow and crowed roads in many Asian cities, these three-wheeled auto rickshaws with small size and narrow body become an important means of transport for urban resident. However, the conventional auto rickshaws with two or four strokes gasoline engines present serious pollution problem in the cities. Thus, the conventional gasoline auto rickshaws are forbidden in some cities by the local government. This has led to the conceptualization of an all-electric auto rickshaw. Electric power auto rickshaws use the electrical machines for propulsion instead of the gasoline engines. This paper aims to analyze and compare the performance of four different electrical machines: squirrel cage induction machine (IM), interior permanent magnet synchronous motor (IPM), synchronous reluctance machine (SynRM), surface mounted permanent magnet synchronous motor (SPMSM). The suitability of the electric machine for the application depends on the constraints such as output torque, power density, efficiency, power factor and so on. The analysis and comparison are based on finite element method (FEM) and provides information for making a suitable selection.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128728716","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Modeling is an indispensable tool to help engineers design better battery cooling systems. A fast and accurate battery thermal model using state space representation can be used to predict volume-averaged cell temperature or temperature at user specified locations under transient heat dissipation. The matrices of the state space model are calculated by curve-fitting the step response of the state space model to that of the battery thermal system computed from computational fluid dynamics (CFD) results. In this paper, the vector-fitting (VF) method in the frequency domain is proposed for the curve-fitting. The frequency domain VF method is shown to provide advantages over the time domain Levenberg-Marquardt (LM) method. For batteries using prismatic cells, the VF method is shown to be more accurate. For multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) battery thermal systems, the VF method generates much smaller state space models compared with those using the LM method. Therefore, for MIMO battery thermal systems, models from the VF method run much faster than those from the LM method.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130415079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The introduction of distributed renewable energy and storage together with transportation electrification and deployment of electric and hybrid vehicles, allows traditional consumers to not only consume, but also to produce, or store energy. The active participation of these so called “prosumers”, and their interactions may have a significant impact on the operations of the emerging smart grid. However, how these capabilities should be integrated with the overall system operation is unclear. Intelligent energy management systems give users the insight they need to make informed decisions about energy consumption. Properly implemented, intelligent energy management systems can help cut energy use, spending, and emissions. This project aims to develop a consumer point of view, user-friendly, intelligent energy management system, that enables vehicle drivers to plan their trips, manage their battery pack and under specific circumstances, inject electricity from their plug-in vehicles to power the grid, contributing to frequency regulation.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123611870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This instability phenomenon is due to the interaction between the network structure and the negative impedance created by the CPLs. To ensure the system stability, we propose in this paper a method which permits to design a fault-tolerant stabilizing system for a DC-microgrid with CPLs. First, it consists in the implementation of local stabilizing agents on the CPLs. Then, using a constrained optimization problem, a method to design the stabilizing system is proposed. It permits to consider many fault cases as system reconfiguration or agent failure. To illustrate the method, it is implemented on test bench and experimental results are given to confirm its efficacy.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"38 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114011611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The target application for the work is an on-board charger for a plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV). A PHEV battery charger consists of an ac-dc front end power factor correction circuit (PFC), followed by a dc-dc converter. For this application the design objective is to achieve high efficiency, in order to minimize the charger size, charging time and the amount and cost of electricity drawn from the utility. This paper presents a new detailed state of operation analysis of the dc-dc converter, a detailed design procedure, simulation and experimental results. In this paper, a neural network based method for detecting unbalanced voltage fault which is one of the various faults in 3-phase traction motors was surveyed. Proposed method is independent from load state and fault percentage; which means neural network is able to detect fault and load condition without any assumption about the state of the load and fault. In proposed method, two separate neural networks are used for each problem. Experimental acquired data is used to train neural networks. Based on first test results, the neural structure could detect unbalanced voltage fault percentage with 98.5% precision. Also, based on second test results, the neural network could detect load condition accurately in 97% of the cases. According to these results, neural network is a good choice for solving similar problems.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131479952","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
