A finite element model is then used to study the static characteristics of the MagLev, namely, its magnetic force, flux density distribution and system inductance. Based on MagLev's equivalent electrical circuit, dynamic model of the MagLev system has been developed. Lyapaunov's stability analysis method has been used to investigate the stability of the MagLev system in closed loop operation. Finally, the analytical and dynamic models will be verified using simulation results.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-07-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117153895","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is also important to keep trace of particular events occurring during the life of the cell, preventing data losses if the cell is disconnected from the original battery management system for maintenance purpose or to be used in another battery in a second life market perspective. We present in this work a gauge that enables the cell monitoring and data storage in a non-volatile memory. The gauge is embedded in the cell and performs cell voltage and temperature measurements. It communicates with a battery management system through an isolated interface, so that multiple gauges, used on series-connected cells, can share a common bus without voltage conflicts.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125265468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The work presented in this paper gives an assessment of the silicon carbide power modules in power inverters. Output characteristics and switching energy loss characteristics based on experimental data are incorporated. Comparison of total power losses and efficiency of a silicon carbide based three phase inverter with silicon base is analyzed and studied. The efficiency of the silicon carbide based inverters based on chosen device is found to be above 99%, and more efficient than most conventional silicon based IGBT inverters. This is most so at high switching frequency.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125548481","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Through the bidirectional flyback converter and the selection switches, the charge from the battery pack can be transferred to the selected module or vice versa to perform balancing. The design allows disconnection of faulty modules whilst maintaining the power supplied to the vehicle to avoid the risks of immediate power cut-off. Analytical studies and experimental results from the laboratory prototype are presented to verify the performance of the proposed design.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116079159","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In most transportation applications, fuel cells are used to augment the existing electrical system and not as a stand-alone power source. The addition of a fuel cell to any type of transport, however, will have an influence on the dynamic behavior of the electrical system within the transport and may even cause instability in a previously stable system. This paper analyzes the consequences of integrating a Proton Exchange Membrane fuel cell to the existing electrical generation and distribution system of a Boeing 787-8 aircraft through modeling and simulation tools. Physical testing, although beneficial and critical, is expensive and time consuming. The modeling approach in the initial scoping stage provides an early indicator of the feasibility of fuel cell use on an airplane in addition to possible challenges that should be addressed with hardware testing. Simulation results are presented using MATLAB, Simulink, and SimPowerSystems environments.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"249 23","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114057886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) have the potential to reduce the fuel consumption and improve vehicular emissions. In this paper, two rule-based control strategies based on the all electric range focused operation and blended operation are applied for the first time to discuss the effects of the power split PHEV planetary gear ratios to the operation costs. Since there are many PHEV operation modes, modeling the power split device (PSD) configuration is complex and designing the ideal PSD planetary gear ratio is quite challenging. The study provides the direction of the determination of PSD planetary gear ratio. The simulation model is developed by using MATLAB. The dynamic PSD and powertrain models of PHEV are used in the simulation. The simulation results of this study demonstrate that the PSD planetary gear ratio can be determined ideally to minimize the vehicle running cost, and to maintain the vehicle performance.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114400192","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Water or oil spillage, etc. are a common phenomenon in industrial environment causing the wheels of the vehicle to slip. Under slippage the load distribution amongst the wheels are disturbed. A novel and simple method is suggested to correct the speed reference of the drives so as to improve the load sharing amongst the wheels under these conditions.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"283 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114490717","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
