These factors are pushing the automobile industry towards more efficient, hybrid vehicles. Current trends show petroleum is being edged out in favor of electricity as the main vehicular motive force. The proposed methods create an optimized charging control schedule for all participating Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles in a distribution grid. The optimization will minimize daily operating costs, reduce system losses, and improve power quality. This requires participation from Vehicle-to-Grid capable vehicles, load forecasting, and Locational Marginal Pricing market predictions. Vehicles equipped with bidirectional chargers further improve the optimization results by lowering peak demand and improving power quality.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128291796","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose to divide a distribution network into several virtual microgrids (VMGs). Unlike microgrids studied before, virtual microgrids are flexible and cover the entire distribution network. Using VMGs, the control and management of a distribution network can be achieved in a hierarchical fashion. We propose to control the distribution network in two levels: a lower or VMG level and a higher or grid level. We introduce modeling frameworks for the two levels. At the VMG level, VMGs are modeled as stochastic hybrid machines. At the grid level, the distribution network is modeled as a finite state machine with variables. We illustrate the modeling and control approach for a typical distribution network.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"100 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125085593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The CogEMS is based on the four building principles of human cognition: the perception-action cycle, memory, attention and intelligence. It would enable an efficient and robust optimization of the energy flow within the microgrid and between the power grid and the microgrid, voltage and frequency control, and protection of the devices. The purpose is to equip the microgrid with an intelligent control system in support of transportation electrification. In future, more and more electric vehicles (EVs) will be connected to the grid via the vehicle-to-grid technology (V2G), posing both challenges and opportunities for microgrids. EVs can be regarded either as the loads of the microgrid during the charging stage, or energy storage devices during the discharging stage. In this context, the energy management system should be able to intelligently coordinate the two stages.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126868429","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although such wheelchairs are well suited for a physically disabled person who needs physical activity, they tend to be expensive and inefficiently designed. This paper introduces the overall development of a novel power assisted wheelchair. Research on the conventional three types of wheelchair is presented, as well as the comparisons among three kinds of wheelchair and the recent design research. The proposed power assisted wheelchair is meant to match and exceed the conventional wheelchair's performance but with a more intelligent and lower cost design. Instead of using a torque sensor or pressure transducers for measuring and amplifying human force, the proposed drive train controller uses infrared sensors to trigger two Brushless DC hub motors. Using this information in addition to the information from a motion sensor that detects the road conditions, appropriate torque command is generated. The whole drive train system's power is supplied by a Li-battery package. One wheelchair prototype has been built, and conceptual designs are modeled and simulated in MATLAB/Simulink.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122539795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method is based on the online extraction of the second harmonic component of the voltage reference vector in the d-q frame. It will be shown that the amplitude of this harmonic depends on the inter-turn fault severity and the fault detection is realized by comparing the amplitude of the second harmonic to a threshold. This is a low cost method in CPU time. This work is based on urban drive cycle operating conditions, the optimal operating region of the internal combustion engine, and the varying voltage requirement of traction motors. The paper presents how the efficiency of the SHEB can be significantly enhanced by decoupling the dc-link voltage at the generator end of the topology from that of the traction inverter end. The analyzed results verify the proposed circuit for SHEB applications.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129245456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
