The integration of many buses with high power transfer requirement in a short span of time, would leave a huge stress on the power utility if the power quality is poor. This paper proposes an improved high-performance bi-directional off-board level-3 quick charging station based on vector control technique adopted for electrical machines, for fast and efficient charging of electric bus. The proposed off-board battery charging station can be scaled down for small electric vehicles also. This paper aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of the developed charger at the design stage prior to its implementation and prototyping stages. A detailed description on the design of the developed charger is provided and the performance of the bi-directional charger is elicited through numerical investigations.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126021524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, multi-gear transmission with more gears is still beneficial in improving acceleration and fuel economy performance of the vehicles than one with fewer gears, even not as much as in conventional vehicles. On the other hand, use of multi-gear transmission with more gears inevitably adds complexity to vehicle structure and control, consequently resulting in high cost. In this paper, the sensitivity of vehicle performance to transmission gears for a parallel HEV has been analyzed by using SOC based Dynamic Programming. The results generated in this paper provide helpful guidance for HEV design.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126767602","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different from conventional DHB converters, a PWM plus phase shift (PPS) control strategy is introduced here due to the variable voltage operation mandates of an ultra-capacitor. This novel combination will be discussed from following two aspects in this paper. In the theory level, a minute operation principle analysis of this PPS based DHB converter is presented, and so is the principle of ZVS. In the industry implementation level, firstly an optimal rated phase shift angle selection strategy is introduced to reduce conduction losses and device current ratings. Then, to extend the ZVS range, the method to decide input DC inductance is proposed. Finally, an adjustment rules for dead band time is also discussed to avoid negative effect of dead band and a detailed mechanism of a re-resonance phenomenon in dead band transient is analyzed. A 9-21V/240W hardware prototype is built up to prove validity of this work.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124146469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To apply this method, a new modeling based on energetic variables, is introduced. Contrary to classical approach for which voltages and currents are the state variables, we propose to use electrostatic energies and powers as state variables. We will prove that with this approach the stability study, under some conditions, is few dependent of the operating point. Thus, the stability of large scale distributed system can be simplified if all the components of the system verify such properties. The proposed approach is verified with help of simulation results and experimental validation.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122827580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The working state of the battery is very important to the safety of an EV. Online estimation of the state of charge (SOC) is essential in obtaining the battery working conditions. In order to achieve an accurate estimation of the SOC, the battery model should be adjustable when the battery is aged. A joint battery model and SOC estimation method based on the sigma point kalman filter (SPKF) is presented. A combined battery model is used to depict the relationship between the open circuit voltage (OCV) and the SOC of the battery. The main battery model parameter for estimation is the internal resistance and it is jointly estimated with the SOC online. Experimental results show that the SPKF based joint estimation method is effective.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126464604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This manuscript introduces another merit of UCs which is utilizing the UC as an active power filter in PHEV charging process. With the proposed simple control scheme, UC ensures constant battery charging current where unity power factor operation is provided by AC/DC charger. As a result, the DC/DC power stage in conventional charger structure is eliminated. The analyses show that battery current ripple less than 4%, total harmonic distortion (THD) less than 1.5% and power factor (PF) higher than 0.996 can be achieved with the proposed power electronic structure and active filtering control scheme.","PeriodicalId":278740,"journal":{"name":"2012 IEEE Transportation Electrification Conference and Expo (ITEC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130480772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
